robert akroyd is the owner of this furniture design place and hes picked just a couple of pieces in the very small showroom and those pieces are guarded by his big black shaggy dog.(not really, he just stares at you). the one piece that he had before you was a table made from wood and steel. the tabletop was about a couple inches thick at least and like you slice a nice thick piece of bread from your favorite loaf, he sliced a nice thick piece of tree from his favorite ash. the table was created by splitting a thicker piece horizontally lengthwise, so youd get two virtually identical pieces that butt up against each other, forming a barely imperceptible seam(not noticed until he pointed it out to me), and a tabletop that was a mirror image of itself from the middle going outwards. it was gone over with oil a good half dozen times and thats good because he was explaining that were it to get scratched, youd simply have to sand it a bit, and reapply the oil and that was that. on other tables, not done in the same way, youd have to refinish it. the bottom was a simple rectangular steel frame, not high polished. his designs are very simple, always staying close to simple shapes being paired together with other simple shapes of varying material. like wood an metal. or wood and leather, etc. he makes some incredible headboards for beds that also involve a slice of a tree within a rectangle of more rectangular wood. theres always a sly, wispy curve or two on each piece. a little wink of sorts. you should really go to his website and see his portfolio of pictures from different angles and close-ups and also some of his blueprint drawings.
