While making our way on a long path from Delta to Surrey, we were hungry but didn’t want to do a fast food stop. Time didn’t allow for a sit-down meal, so we pulled into a strip mall to find a deli or something. I noticed the«donair» sign on this restaurant and asked my companion«What is a donair?» He shrugged. Foodies that we are, and wanting to avoid the multi-national sandwich shop next door if we could, we weren’t sure what we were getting into. But our love of culinary adventure swept us in the doors and we were might impressed! Donair, as it turns out(or at least donair at this place) is basically like a Mediterranean burrito to go! They stuff a giant fresh-baked pita full of yummy goodness, wrap it up tight, and send you on your way. PERFECT! The restaurant is set up sort of like a Subway shop — you choose your main ingredient(mine was chicken & falafel) and they add whatever veggies and sauces you want. I did my standard«everything but lettuce» and opted for three sauces: garlic, tzatziki, and spicy red. The very skilled lady at the counter plopped it all inside the pita and then — quite magically, actually, considering the amount of food involved — managed to get it all rolled up and wrapped without breaking the bread.(If I’d tried this at home it would have been a huge mess.) The dude ordered lamb & falafel, and added feta to his sauce choices, and loved it. We happily munched our donairs as we continued our road trip. They were absolutely delicious. The falafel was perfectly spiced, and the meats deliciously seasoned. The restaurant itself is pretty bare bones, but the staff are very friendly. There are bottled beverages available to purchase, and seating if you want to eat in. After we paid I noticed the tasty-looking baklava they were selling for dessert. Next time!
