With the plethora of sushi places here in Port Moody, this is an easy pass. Came here a few months ago, ordered the Cali roll & negitoro, nothing special. Spacious.

This place use to be nice service and good quality food. Not sure if they changed owner or something, recently visit on a sunday lunch experience as follow: — ridiculous long waiting time for sushi roll — greasy teriyaki dish — falling apart sushi nigiri — poor inventory: had to change our order 3 times because they don’t have the sashimi available. Service is still quite friendly but nothing much to expect when there is no food to serve on the table.

I used to go here a lot when they were at their old North Road location in Burnaby and I always enjoyed it. Now? Not so much. The place itself is very charming and I initially added this to my «we have to try this place» list one night when I was on a walk and noticed how nice their entry looked. The husband and I finally gave it a try today and we won’t be back. First off, we were in when it was quiet. The server greeted us and directed us to a table before pushing past me to go somewhere else. We sat there for a good ten minutes easily without any service and there was only one other table with two people there. Finally our server came to take our order and we asked if we could please have some tea. She came with our sunomono and no tea so I asked again if we could please have some. She replied that they were still making it and that it takes time.. . Fair enough but this is the first sushi place I’ve been to that hasn’t brought tea right away and where I’ve actually had to ask for it. Wasn’t expecting that. The sunomono was terrible. Usually it’s got a bit of a lemon/vinegar taste to it and it’s a favourite that gets ordered everywhere we go. This was the worst I’ve ever had. It tasted like plain water with noodles. Not so good. The nigiri we ordered was dry and kind of sticky as if it had been sitting out for a while and it did not appear or taste fresh. And the wooden serving boards? That was the worst part so I saved that for last. They were splintered and rough along the edges and there was a big chunk of really awful looking moldy lint stuck to the side of mine. There was also a big dirty smear of what looked like dried wasabi that didn’t get washed off right beside my roll. Gross. The server never once came to check on us and we finally had to go and ask to pay at the register. Sucks that things were gross and that the service was so bad because the place is cute.

I’m surprised at the high ratings. I guess it’s port moody. Fish was just ok. The tuna wasn’t that fresh. The salmon was ok. I thought the rice was barely passable, like sushi from a mall or fast food sushi.

I have to concur with the most recent updates below me. The price increases are out of this world… ridiculous. The dinner box use to be around $ 15, now it is $ 20. From a consumer stand point, i was floored. My favorite sushi restaurant is now a place that I do not recommend. The price increases may be necessary for them to survive because of rising food costs but damn… disappointed for sure. We had a good run, good luck with your business.

For 17 years this place didnt cha ge their price. It was super cheap with superior quality as an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant. They finally changed their pricing, and for that I’d call it just average. But the problem is they get their sushi imported from JAPAN… fukushima events… u know… If radioactivity has already reached Vancouver, how much greater will the Japanese imported sushi be…

Ordered takeout: 2 miso soup 1 California roll 4 avocado rolls 1 gyoza Total was a reasonable $ 19. Miso soup and gyoza were standard fare, good. California roll was less than pleasing with some dark, overripe avocado. Avocado rolls here are«nori on the outside» maki rolls, which is ok, just different than what I was expecting.

I used to go here years ago and it was quite good, hence the two stars but if the experience I will be talking about was my first time here I would totally be giving it one star. I phoned in my order for takeout, I had to repeat each item to the lady taking my order 5 times, fun. I ordered a Dynamite Roll even though it was ridiculously priced at $ 6.50(what?!!). Anyways, fast forward to taking the food home, my boyfriend’s chicken teriaky looked like some disgusting mystery meat with no teriyka sauce on it at all. The expensive DYnamite Roll I orderd had four(4!!) pieces, great value for $ 6.50…NOT. Also, the Tempura was soggy. Will not be going here ever again.

I’m VERY picky with sushi… My dad was a sushi chef and thats how he got his visa here from Japan. This is one of a few authentic sushi restaurants in the tri-cities and one of my favorites. Their Chirasi-don has so many kinds of sushi and everything is fresh. When people ask me where I go for sushi, this is the first place that comes to mind although, I did like the old location better for the look and feel.

They’ve seriously gone downhill from where they started. It used to be my go to place in the Tri-Cities for Sushi. On my last & final visit: Udon broth that tasted like soy sauce & water… Blah! Dark discoloured tuna pieces were offloaded as their lunch special. It definitely turned and was unfit for human consumption(dangerous!) I had to spit it out & their only reply was that they would inform the chef. I paid. Bit my tongue in disbelief and left Shame… the quality was good with the previous owners. This was a big third & final strike. Never Again

I have driven by this location many times before, and have been wanting to try it out because it always looked busy from the outside. You know, I am always skeptical to try sushi restaurants that are not busy… So, when my hubby was stumped where to take me on my birthday, I decided this is where I wanted to go for dinner. We ordered a Chef’s Choice sashimi platter, which was large and had a good variety of things but price was very reasonable. It’s true I have had even more impressive(e.g. lobster) sashimi platters but only in places with much higher price tags. We also ordered fresh oysters, ten(shrimp tempura) zaru soba, and clam miso soup. All were good — maybe not quite a WOW but they were just fine. Even though the restaurant is big, the number of tables is actually fewer than I expected. So, you definitely have your space and service was decent. I think the bill came to just under $ 60 after taxes if I recall correctly… Dinner bills usually go higher than this for an all-seafood meal in a nice restaurant nowadays, don’t they? I’m ready to come back again next time I am looking for a raw(e)-some meal!(lol)

I’ve been a patron of Fuji Sushi for years. It was closed over the summer of 2012 and I traveled all the way to their sister restaurant, Sushi Mart, on Robson St. downtown just to get great authentic Japanese sushi. They use fresh, high quality ingredients and their prices are very reasonable. Lunch is a steal. Dinner is a little pricier, but still very reasonable. I’ve seen the same sushi chefs there for years, and the owner is almost always present. There is also a loyal Japanese clientele that often sit at the sushi bar in community with others they meet that night. Fuji seemed to have a bit of a struggle adjusting to their new location in Port Moody. I think this was mainly due to their new location being double the size of their old location. They had to hire more chefs and service staff, but required them to be trained sushi chefs or service staff who are Japanese-speaking. That lead to some slow food service as they were not prepared for their highly anticipated re-opening. Now that it has been a couple months, they are much better adjusted and I still love going there. It remains of one my favourite restaurants.

This is a three-star rating, in a good way. I do eat here once or twice a month. Food here is pretty consistent. Service is OK.

Fuji Sushi Japanese Restaurant moved from its old Austin Ave, Coquitlam location to Port Moody(beside McDonald’s and the Police Station). This location used to be a Hong Kong style café I used to frequent during high school and frankly nothing really has changed. Fuji kept most of the old décor, booth seats, and added a sushi bar and a tatami seated area. I was told how great this place was or how wonderful it was that they had REALJAPANESECHEFS. WOW what a disappointment. Perhaps someone can educate me what I am missing. Perhaps I am confused. We wanted to order toro sashimi, but we were told there was not enough, maybe enough to make a nigiri piece or two. Already it was not promising on such a simple staple item. Alas, Tuna and salmon sashimi 6.00 each: The tuna was a shade too dark for its own good and was rather icy. I would’ve thought it’d thawed out with all that tan. Salmon pieces were alright. Nothing spectacular. Spicy Scallop Roll 4.00: decent pieces with a little bit of spice and tobiko. Saba Nigiri 2.50 pp: Not the best saba I’ve encountered and the shiso leaf in between made it taste pretty weird. Perhaps an acquired taste. Chawanmushi 4.25: By far one of the most disgusting steamed egg custard I’ve had. Everything about it was wrong. Raw carrot, green bean. No steamed mushroom. Flat tasting. Gyoza 3.75: Regular pan friend pork gyoza. Korokke 3.50: 3 tiny potatoe patties light breaded and deep fried. BBQ Black Cod Neck(Gindara Kama BBQ) 8.75: The best tasting dish of the night. A simple salted grill robata. So excuse me while I cannot comprehend the raving 4 star rating nor the excitement for a Japanese Chef. Restaurants like this are a dime a dozen. Your best bet around the Tri-Cities are still perhaps Shyun Sushi Bar, Osamu and Nagano. If you have found a GEM, kindly please give me a shout!

This used to be a place that I enjoyed, fresh sashimi, good hot food but now it’s average. I have to say that the sashimi is better than the other local sushi places like Sushi Town but their hot dishes weren’t the best… the teriyaki chicken tasted like the soya sauce chicken from Chinese restaurants or Chinese BBQ stands if you know what I mean. The tempura were only warm, and somehow the grilled salmon was cold. I’m not sure if its suppose to come like that but… somehow it seemed a bit off since its new opening… Now my new favorite is Matoi Sushi. :)

THEGOOD: — the preparation of the rice in the nigiri and rolls is excellent — perfectly packed and fragrant — props to the chef. — the cooked food was solid — mainly fed myself off the sashimi and the tako and hamachi were highlights and the salmon and tuna didn’t dissapoint — service was overall pleasant and timely — big selection of sake and seasonal items in a non-pretentious environment — pretty reasonable prices for the quality — free parking in the plaza THEBAD: — I usually quick-assess a sushi joint from their uni. They skimped out a bit on the good stuff and I wished I had more fresh uni and less rice. If I sampled the uni before I set foot in here — I probably would have turned around and left. — it’s probably the best sushi joint in the area — but I don’t think it’s worth the trip out to ‘Coq. Town’ for Fuji. Overall, I think the rave reviews for this joint might have set my expectations unrealistically high — sorry to be the Russian judge here, but Fuji is a 3-star in my books. Perfectly good sushi with no glaring flaw but I really wasn’t all that impressed. If I frequented the area, this may be regular stop for me — but really not worth the drive. Fuji is comparable to Toshi — it’s busy but doesn’t have lineups — but I think I still prefer Toshi.

OK time to review one of my favourite Japanese restaurants! Being Japanese Canadian, I’ve had Japanese home cooked food… my whole life. I’ve reviewed the not so good places, but this is for my friends who ask where my favourite Japanese restaurants in the Vancouver area are. This is one of them. My husband and I frequent this restaurant when we are craving sushi, and have the time so we’ve had almost everything on the menu. I generally order sushi and kitchen food(my favorites are their homemade gyoza, softshelled crab, or chicken karaage). When I’m not feeling well I opt for a couple pieces of sushi and their nabeyaki udon which is great with the traditional trimmings like shiitake, uzumaki naruto(fishcake not the animé character), prawn tempura and a poached egg(no hokie filler)! I’ve love everything here except their oyster motoyaki… a it’s a bit heavy with other stuff downplaying the oyster for my liking. But if you like, give it a go! But as their name suggests they are known for their sushi with their experienced sushi chefs who oversee the movement in the restaurant with great rice and fresh fish. I love their Chirashi Sushi with all the varieties of fish and sometimes ask for uni as an addition as well. Melt in your mouth… yumm. I see so many people from the Japanese community here, my parents’ friends, my friends I haven’t seen in a while, and even my previous Japanese bosses on separate occasions. You always know when you’ve found a good place that’s run by and frequented by their own. They have tables for groups in the back as well, but space is limited. If you want a seat no matter the size of your party(2+), avoid the disappointment and make a reservation.

I was feeling an urge for some sushi, and decided to do a little search to find some place around the area that I have not been to, and it took me up here, and after reading a recent review, and giving this place 5 stars, I had to see what was going on at this establishment. Located in the old Burquitlam Plaza, this place is right off to the side, and from the outstretch it was looking real tiny. When we entered for lunch, it was full of people eating. And from the language spoken, there were real Japanese people working here. There was this old guy standing behind the sushi bar, and my co-worker mentioned that he is always standing there and is probably the boss. Also there are two sushi chefs slicing and dicing up food. The place is filled with bright colored wood, and the tables are well spaced, so the seating does not feel cramped. Even though this is a small place, it’s probably the right size. You walk in and you can smell the fresh rice, and rice vinegar lingering in the air, with a hint of green tea. They had an entire page of lunch specials, ranging from boxes, to rolls, to sushi combos, too many to name, they also dropped their regular menu, and this place definately has a full list of food, suprising for the size of restaurant. I ordered the lunch special BC roll, and a sushi combo D, and I can tell you, it was amazingly filling. I probably could have done without one of the dishes. The seafood used was definately fresh, and the rice was a little warm, and soft, with the right mixture of rice vinegar where the rice was not overpowering the seafood. I would definately give a 4.5 star for this place, and have to say that there are the best place for sushi around this neighborhood. Another one big up is there wasabi. Whatever wasabi they are using, is real good, as the texture is so smooth, and the spicyness of the green paste packs some real good oomph.
