I stopped for a quick bite and got a sausage on a bun, it was excellent! Sauerkraut was very tasty and the sausage was the perfect spiciest. The bun was also nice and hearty, no mealy Wonder-bread buns here. If your wandering around the market and don’t feel like sitting down to eat I highly recommend stopping here.

What a lovely little find in the Market. I love sausages [no pun intended] and this place has a lot of sausages!!! I have only tried the hot Italian from the hot food counter so far and this sausage is a very good indication that the rest of the produce here will be top notch. The sausage was just the right amount of heat [maybe a little too hot for some] and the sauerkraut is the nicest I have ever had, there appears to be bacon going through it! How bad could that be? [Ina Garten quotes are the best]. I have bought the hot Italian twice and am looking forward to buying some from the meat counter to cook myself on the BBQ at some point. Staff seemed pleasant enough although the 2nd guy that served me at the hot food counter was a bit aloof and needed a bit of a cough to get his attention. Lovely Scottish lady at the cash desk. Price seems spot on which is a rarity in the mostly overpriced area that is Byward Market!

Hey Meatatarians, this looks like a fun spot… sausages galore, all homemade, super tasty — we didn’t get a chance to taste some of the lunch options but there were a few people chowing down, can’t wait to go back and expand our shopping experience. 18 of 30

If you’re ever wandering around the Byward Market looking for an inexpensive place to grab a quick bite, look no further than the Sausage Kitchen. It’s right across the street from Zak’s Dinner. The Sausage Kitchen is a retail meat and deli shop that has a small take-out counter. Any place that make their own sausages, without any fillers and gluten free, and cooks them for you, you just have to give it a try. They offer a sausage-sampler platter, one sausage of your choice with 3 perogies, saurkraut, your choice of fries and a pop for $ 7.99. Now thats a deal. Don’t fret because they only offer you one sausage cause there’s sausage in the saurkraut. And if you order the Hungarian fries, that too comes with bits of sausage. It’s kinda like a hashbrown. It’s like getting an extra sausage with your meal. And to be honest, it was a struggle just to finish all that food. You probably won’t need to eat for the rest of the day. The place is quite Spartan, though, with only a 15 ft-long standing-room only counter along one of the windows. If you have little kids, you’ll probably have to find a place to eat somewhere outside the store. But if you don’t mind standing, It’s a great place to people watch while you eat. Do go early though because they stop serving at 4PM. The Sausage Kitchen is a real-deal ‘sausage fest,’ but in a good way.

I never noticed this place until this week and was expecting a butcher shop full of sausages. Yup it’s a butcher shop full of sausages! The shop is pretty cool and carries a large selection of European sausages as well as many other edible items from Europe. They also serve hot foods that include fried chicken, schnitzel, sandwiches, sausage on a bun, fries, Hungarian sauerkraut, Hungarian fries and fries. The hot food isn’t bad here. The other sausage selection is pretty good but some of the other meats didn’t look the fresh. I did end up purchasing some sausages and they were pretty good.

Well the name don’t lie! This deli has some serious sausage, and german fare, as well as your traditional meat counter. The schnitzel on a bun is freakin huge, and tasty. The meatloaf in a bun for me lacked in quality what it totally surpassed in quantity. And the hungarian fries, any time you mix sausage with fries, you will get my vote. Portions are huge, don’t be expecting to lose any weight here, but I mean what health nut is going into a place called the sausage kitchen anyway?

If you like sausages and smoked meats done in the german style then you’re in luck. The Sausage Kitchen is a gem in the Byward Market. A fast and hearty lunch counter that offers sausages, Bavarian meatloaf, delicious home fries and perogies.

The Sausage Kitchen offers something different in Ottawa. I was there over the lunch hour and the place was bustling! A haze of smoke filled the air from the busy grill, and the place had the distinct musty earthy smell of meat. The counter that wraps around the shop offers a vast selection of, of course, sausage(fresh & frozen), but also a huge range of salamis and other cured meats, smoked meats(including whole smoked turkeys) and other freshly prepared foods like schnitzel and pierogis. Other novelties include the popular European style stand up lunch which allows the shop to really pack e’m in and makes it a handy spot for a quick bite to eat because of the quick turnover. If you really want to get into the European spirit you can even order a beer with lunch… the catch– it’s non-alcoholic– awww!

Sausage Kitchen, located in the heart of the Byward Market, is a European-style deli that offers meats, cheeses, sauces, jams, spices, crackers and cookies, but most importantly, home-made sausages! They have many varieties of sausage(including cajun, hot Italian, garlic) and you can buy them packaged up to go or heated up on a fresh bun for $ 3.50. The store looks much bigger on the outside than it really is, so be prepared to bump elbows with fellow deli enthusiasts. And, there is only one cash register(not exactly located in the most strategic of locations) so the wait to pay can require a little endurance. But, the wait is worth it. I ordered the hot Italian sausage on a bun and it was authentic and delish.
