One of the great things about Koyman Galleries is when you first enter the Rideau Centre and come down the first set of escalators you’re greeted by some great works in the window at Koyman. The store has a lot of local work, including striking paintings of the Rideau Canal and Gatineau Park. Despite it’s prime location(it likely ropes in a LOT of tourists looking for an Ottawa keepsake), the store’s prices are reasonable. Staff are friendly but the only time I’ve been in there I’ve noticed they don’t jump to assist — likely I don’t look like a high rolling art collector. I love the vibrant pieces in this gallery and if I’m ever on the hunt for something to gift or decorate my place with local flavour, I’d certainly include this place on my list of places to check out.

Koyman Galleries is located at the bottom of the escalator on the second floor of the Rideau Centre. If you’ve ever been to Rideau, guaranteed you’ve passed by it a ton of times from either walking around the mall or taking the escalators. After walking by it so many times, today I actually stopped by to take a look. There is art on display EVERYWHERE! Leaning against the floor or the wall, hung up, framed, on easels, and showcased as part of an exhibition. They focus on Canadian artists of all kinds, including those that draw, paint, and photograph. I love that they put a lot of abstract type of art on display, which makes it easy to just stand in front of the store, staring at the pieces behind the glass. They’re often quite colorful and vibrant, and it’s always so interesting to examine and interpret the different paintings. They also offer framing and consulting services, and even an «On Approval» program, which lets you«try out» the work of art in your home or office for 72 hours before deciding to buy it.

The Koyman Galleries in the Rideau Centre boasts a large selection of Canadian Art, as stated by a sign when you first enter. I loved some of the landscapes here, perhaps because they were tourist-geared, some of them with scenes near the Byward Market or the canal during skating season. But these are the reasons many of us love Ottawa so much! Paintings were reasonably priced and framed tastefully. Be careful when wandering through the store, as there are many paintings sitting on the floor or leaning against the wall. We were greeted and asked if we needed help, especially when we were in the corner discussing which other galleries we planned to see. They seemed to really genuinely care how our experience was. Further branches of the Koyman Galleries are located at the Saint Laurent Mall and Carlingwood.
