I’m no expert on Indian cuisine, I’ve had it here and there. My favorite place was in Tokyo when I visited few years ago. I heard of Haldi from a co-worker and she highly recommended it, my 1st thought was«can it really be that good? is she exaggerating?» Bf and I decided to go to Haldi for dinner on a Saturday night around 6pm. We didn’t have a reservation. I was surprised how small the place was, it wasn’t too busy, and we were seated right away. The place is cozy and was very warm, a bit too dark for me but no one else seem to mind. We ordered a meal set for 2, which came with appetizer, 3 bowls of food: butter chicken, lamb buhna and veggie curry, rice and naan, and a dessert. I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not usually a fan of butter chicken but THIS butter chicken is THEBEST I ever had. It wasn’t spicy, it was creamy and sweet with raisins. I could have had 2 bowls of butter chicken alone. The naan bread was fresh and warm and amazingly delicious as expected. Bf really enjoyed the lamb buhna, it was spicy but not too much. The veggie curry wasn’t anything special but went along well with the other dishes. For dessert we were brought rice pudding with a sweet mango sauce drizzled all over the plate, it was light and fresh, good end to the meal. I already can’t wait to go back to Haldi to have more of that butter chicken and try other dishes. Highly recommended!

Been there couple times with colleagues and friends. Simply awesome. My native Indian friends also raving about it. Amount of hotness is impressive if you insist ;)

My boyfriend and I started going here about a year ago and it’s our official Indian restaurant in Ottawa, we usually go before seeing an Absolute Comedy show. The service is always so great, it’s a family owned restaurant and they truly care about how your meal is and want to know where they can improve. They always love to teach you about how the meals are cooked and the traditional ways of doing it — I always learn something new, it’s great. I rarely give 5 stars but the combination of just great Indian cuisine and the most helpful staff I’ve had in ages, they truly deserve it. If you’re looking to try a few different items, we always order the Combination B — you get apps, 3 dishes, naan and dessert — perfect date night, we generally get some wine too. The wine selection there isn’t great, but I don’t find that at many of these types of restaurants.

We ate there this evening. The food was wonderful, authentic, fresh, tasty. And generous portions. The owner came to meet us to ensure that we enjoyed the meal. And we did. I have eaten a lot of Indian food, and this was definitely as good as it gets. we will be going back.

Went here because of the great reviews. Hard to find good Indian food in Ottawa. But maybe I went on an off night? We got takeout. Vindaloo chicken, saag paneer, naan, and mango lassi. The vindaloo was very spicy but little else. The sauce was thin and red and oily. Saag paneer and good texture and not overcooked(although maybe saag is supposed to be overcooked if you want true Indian). But again, lacked taste. Naan was tasty and soft. A bit dense rather than the kind that has large air bubbles. Still enjoyed it. Mango lassi was more sour than sweet. I found a lemon seed in it so maybe they mix it with lemon juice. I didn’t like it but my wife and kid drank it all. The place is tiny but has a nice patio. I liked the yellow walls and large spice containers. Staff is friendly.

This place unfortunately, did not impress me like it did everyone else. Trust me, i wanted it to. The prices here are fantastic, generally under $ 13 for all of the curries. its also very small, but cute, and there are huge jars of spices lining the walls. All these things made me wanna like it. I initially wanted to substitute the butter chicken in one of the combo plates for the paneer masala, which is normally $ 2 cheaper, but was told by the waitress it’d cost $ 2 more. Kind of irritating… But anyway, I ordered the paneer masala, 2 samosas and an order of rice and my total was $ 19. The rice is expensive, $ 4, I got a big serving of it but its really too much rice and there was only one size. The server brought me pappadum and a nice sweet sauce while I waited. To get to the food I was very disappointed. The samosas were crispy which I like, but they didn’t come with any sauce and I found them bland. Also the filling was slimey and kind of weird. The paneer masala was not good either. Very very bland. The only noticeable flavor was the spice. This place is very bare bones and I think it is because it keeps the costs down… Ie: my food was cheaply packaged, chair was rickety, there were pieces out of the bowl the pappadum came in. Doesn’t bother me, but at least the food could be good. Did I order the wrong dish? Maybe. I’m only here for another 4 days so I doubt I’ll be back.

This place is so cute. Really good value for money with generous portion sizes. The couple that owns it are really nice and came out ask about how we found them. You can peer into the kitchen and see the array of spices they use. The dhansak was delicious and the naan and chiapatti were truly authentic. It’s a family business that has done a great job. It’s only

Delicious food, and I’ve eaten Indian all around the world as well as ottawa, and this is a gem. No other way to say it. Unique easy Indian inspired food. Love the strong rich spices. Love the dhalsak and lamb dopiaza, sampler(must have to try all the appetizers) and the portions are generous, enough to bring a little home. Owners are a lovely young couple to boot.

We went to Haldi last night, got in the door late at 9pm. I ordered the curry and a pint For $ 13, The beer was a full-to-the-point-of-spilling Mill Street Ale. The curry was a large plate with a mound of rice, a side salad and a whole lot of delish vegtable samber. My gf got the combo plate for 1 it was $ 15 and was a three course meal. She ordered a mango lassi and it was soo good that another was soon ordered. We also ordered a side of naan and a bowl Beef Madras. Everything was piping hot, and spiced perfectly, the kind server warned more than once that the Madras may be too spicy for a timid palate, but I found it great! Nice to have some warmth in my belly on a winter night. The naan bread was good.

Found ourselves here on a lovely sunny fall day. This place is new, clean, and colourful. Our party of three enjoyed wonderful mango lassis, crunchy onion bhajis(sp?) a chicken Tikka wrap(made with naan!), butter chicken, and saag paneer. Each of the plated curries came with rice and salad. Wish we had room for more! Would happily return. Limited access for people with mobility problems is what prevents me from giving this place a five star rating.

I stumbled across Haldi by accident, I work in the area and was actually on my way somewhere else for lunch when I noticed that Il Piccolino has been transformed into Haldi Indian cuisine. Naturally I was intrigued so I went in and got something for lunch. I had a lamb curry and was really impressed, the lamb was really tender and it came with rice and salad(with a pretty decent dressing) for $ 11.00. I also discovered that they have some good specials and so had to come back to sit and eat. I have since been back twice, both times I had their pretty nifty«curry and a pint» deal. You have two options, for $ 13.00 you get a bowl of curry with a pint of beer(Mill St. on draught or Kingfisher in bottles). For an extra $ 3.00 or $ 4.00 you get a plate with rice and salad. BEWARE, it is not obvious on the menu that the plate costs extra so if you want the less expensive bowl you need to ask the waiter. In terms of quality though it is amazing. The fish curry has just the right amount of spiciness while the Shrimp Malai is perfectly balanced with the coconut flavour and rich sauce. The naan bread is also some of the best I have had in Ottawa, it is really really tasty. My only complaint is that the menu needs to be clearer about what costs $ 13.00 and what costs $ 16.00 or $ 17.00 in the«curry and a pint section». The waiter was also a bit unreliable, but they are new and it was obvious that he does not have much experience in the art of waiting tables, but that is something that will come with time so I suggest that you are patient with them. Overall in terms of food quality it is exceptional, would be a 5 star but for their menu confusion.
