This is a great market for picking up fresh veggies and meats. It’s not the classiest grocery store, but it carries lots of great Asian groceries. If you are cooking something off the beaten North American path, you just may find the ingredients here. I got a huge bottle of soy sauce for $ 3.99 and some other Asian cooking staples. Tried the sweet and sour pork from the quick serve area and it was tasty, less than take out and a huge size. The BBQ beef bun was also very good. The service was decent and I will hit the store again when I need more Asian cooking goodies or a veggie run.

My parents discovered this supermarket recently during their explorations of Ottawa and told me about it. I had never even heard of this place and I love checking out new places, so I went today. It is an Asian Supermarket. It’s like T&T but much smaller and much more run-down. It reminds me of supermarkets in Chinatown in Toronto circa 1980s. In terms of typical clientele and atmosphere, it is at the opposite end of the spectrum from Whole Foods. The stuff here is cheap and if you are looking for Asian ingredients to cook with chances are you will find it here. They have canned and dried goods, fresh produce, raw meats and seafood, frozen food, prepared meals(eg. general tao’s chicken, sweet and sour pork, etc.) and baked goods. Their bakery section is small but they have many of the buns that T&T has(BBQ pork buns, red bean buns, custard buns, etc.). Confession: I love Asian baked goods, so I had to try some of their buns. The buns are $ 1.29 each and if you buy 6 you get one free and if you buy 8 you get 2 free. I had a BBQ pork bun and a Beef Curry bun. They were quite large and had lots of filling. The meats were lean and not full of gristle. The bun was sweet like a brioche and was very moist. It tasted very rich; I’m sure it was full of oil. I like the buns at T&T better because they are individually wrapped and look more sanitary. However, the buns at Green Fresh look much more sanitary than at Kowloon! Rumour has it that the bakery at Green Fresh is actually run by the people who ran St. Honore Bakery that was on Booth St. once upon a time. I was only at St. Honore once over 10 years ago, so I don’t really remember it. The cashiers here are very friendly. Green Fresh is in a strip mall in Vanier. It’s next to where the shuttered Emerald Buffet is. Lots of free parking. I would prefer to go to T&T(bigger and cleaner) or Kowloon(shorter drive — although I pass on the unwrapped bakery items there) for my Asian supermarket needs, but it’s nice to have other options.

It must be the cheapest Asian supermarket in Ottawa. One bad thing is, too crowed. You have to wait for a long time to pay for your food.
