This is the most affordable sandwich in the city. It’s old school, no fuss no muss. Perfect meal for the working man who forgot to make his lunch. Don’t forget to grab some mustard and other condiments on the way out otherwise it’ll taste on the dry side.

Great sandwiches, the soups are pretty good and the prices are amazing! This place is nothing fancy, but if you’re looking for a quick, easy and very tasty lunch, this is the spot. They’ve got a pretty good variety of sandwiches, the hot Genoa Salami is quite tasty and just about the best lunch you’ll find for under $ 3.
The service is awesome, the line can be pretty big around lunch time, but it moves really quickly, I’ve never waited more than 10 minutes to be served and out the door.
Highly recommend!

Delightfully reminiscent of the 1960s and 70s without having changed. Fun to sit in the front window and eat your pre-​made saran-​wrapped sandwich.

German Town Deli is a small deli and grocer located downtown. They open and close early. I’ve seen employees locking up the restaurant around 4pm. If you’re looking to pick up an inexpensive, home made sandwich and you eat meat, this is a great option. Be advised that this restaurant is not right for vegetarians and vegans.
I would say German Town Deli makes the 2^nd or 3^rd best sandwich in Ottawa. They are great, but no one tops Di Rienzo’s. They offer baked goods, deli meats, sandwiches made with their baked goods and deli meats, bottled and canned drinks and an assortment of German foods.
Their sandwiches start at 2ish dollars, which is an amazing deal. German Town Deli is also known for their delicious 2 $ cheese cake. I’ve tried it and it’s deliciously intense. If you show up during the «lunch rush», from around noon to one thirty, there’s usually a line that spans across the store. The line generally moves quickly so don’t worry.
There is no seating at German Town Deli. However, when the weather is nice, you can pick up a sandwich and eat outside. If you ever needed to cater a small event with meat-​only sandwiches, I would consider picking some up from here.

The best ham and cheese sandwich in Ottawa. Used to work around the area and usually find myself in the massive line up during lunch hour. Good selection of deli sandwich and dessert. My all time favorite is the simple ham and cheese sandwich. My sister who lives in Vancouver requests at least half dozen everytime I go back visit.

Clean and quick, lines out the door get served fast at lunch. Terrific low cost sandwich and now an all-​dressed option with lettuce tomato and mayo. I love the spicy salami all dressed, but the ham and cheese on rye is still terrific. Cash only location, but right next to a BMO.
BEST sausages I’ve ever had — Landjager — buy 6 or more and there’s no tax. Best roast beef cold cuts in town. Potato soup has bacon or pork — delicious. And there ARE cheese sandwiches now. Apple fritters are terrific.
Staff is kind and helpful.
UPDATE — I added shopping as a category because they do sell grocery supply and german specialty items such as steins, german advent calendars, etc. If you have a favorite german person in your life surprise them with something unique from here!

The freshest bread and rolls, the tastiest cold cuts and spreads, at the best prices. That pretty well sums up German Town, a stalwart from the days of serving a quality, take out sandwich lunch for under two dollars. Service is genuine, but the line up still moves quickly. If you are in downtown Ottawa, and are looking for really good take out at a really good price, this is it. Ham, ham and cheese, salami, beerwurst, liverwurst, and just plain cheese sandwiches are just a few of offerings for sale. The rolls are the best I have tried in Ottawa — always fresh — and they use unsalted butter in their sandwiches. The taste is undeniably European and they’re delicious and affordable. Only open weekdays for the workweek crowd.

I was at my brother-in-law’s house for some barbecue hamburgers and he brought out some ketchup and this amazing mustard. It was in a huge, ceramic jar and had a French-​sounding name. The mustard was hot, tangy and grainy. I loved it and asked my BIL where he got it. He couldn’t really remember, but said it was a deli downtown. So, since then, I have been scouting out delis in the city looking for this mustard. I found German Town and gave it a try. It is a small place — only the one meat (salami, peperoni sticks) and cheese counter and one small shelf of continental condiments. But, the aroma in the air was staggering. Seems they make a lot of sandwiches in there to go or for eating in at their small lunch counter. The prices are rock bottom — a ham on a bun for $ 1.69??? A slice of cheesecake for $ 2? What I really loved was the place was decorated with decorative plates and big painted German beer steins. And, they were all for sale! If you are downtown at Bank and Slater, you have to try this place. The money you save on the food you can spend on a stein — and how cool is that?!
