Ive lived all over Canada working as a chef and I have to say that this spot had the best Reuben sandwich Ive ever eaten. Served on a fresh bun,(I know, not rye) but it worked. The place smelt so good walking into it, So many meat flavours and scents invading every bit of my being. Ill be back every time Im out that way.

So I decided to come back one more time, thinking maybe — just maybe — my previous experience was a freak mistake or a bad day. It wasn’t. Good news: they did have the proper meats for the club extreme sandwich, and the bun itself was fresh, soft, and delicious. However, that’s where the goodness ends. The meat was piled high but flavourless. In the middle of the meat was some folded, melted cheese, which was a weird flavour. The lettuce and tomato tasted old and bland, and it simply didn’t jive with the sandwich. The mayo had an odd flavour to it. It’s strange, since the club sandwich is such an easy sandwich to make, but somehow theirs doesn’t meet the grade. I won’t be visiting here again.

Fantastic sandwiches… seriously good! Lots of meat, freshly sliced… wow! The other meat selection is amazing… such nice people who work there too, very friendly and let you sample before buying… but you don’t need to try it cause you will buy it… it is that good!

About 10 years ago, a client came to Ottawa to do some business with me. One of his priorities was to find a deli to bring back meats to his Muskoka cottage. Too bad Unilocal wasn’t around back then. I was at a loss. I bought my meats at the grocery store, like everyone else I know. I had no idea where to start, or even what qualified as a deli. So I searched, asked around, and really had no answers. Luckily for me, Bank Street Sausage & Deli advertised in a local German publication that my client had found. Apparently it was a big hit, as my client’s next visit to Ottawa included another stop at the deli, where he introduced me to their 80 types of sausages & meats to decide from. What made this deli exceptional was their trumpeting of their commodities being all natural, without fillers, sugar, MSG or GLUTEN(the deal breaker with my free-from-wheat celiac wife & son). Find the deli in an undistinguished strip mall next to the Pizza Hut on Bank Street, just south of Walkley Road. For my family, it’s pretty well the BBQ sausage mecca. They proudly claim that they are the home of the best sausages in the city… and they have won plenty of awards to back their claims. They have so many different varieties, with all the sausages & deli meats made & smoked daily on the premises. They also take pride in the fact that they are able to serve clients in Polish, German, Czech, Slovak, Ukrainian, Russian & of course: English. 5⁄30 — Unilocal Ottawa’s 30 Day Challenge!

Delicious daily made sausages in Ottawa. How can you go wrong? They have a very solid selection of sausages and some of them are really really damn delicious. Try the Cuban habanero!!! They offer samples on the counter but please don’t be a filthy animal and use your hands, they have toothpicks available. I’m thankful I made it through this review without making a sausage party reference.

The best sausages in Ottawa, if we are having a BBQ this is a must go place. The other awesome item here is the potato salad, it is so popular though that you have to get here early on a weekend to buy it, but worth the effort. Friendly staff and a great place to get other European food items.

Bank Street Sausage and Deli is a little hard to find. It is located in a tiny strip plaza on the west side of Bank, just near the Home Depot. But, it is worth searching for if you like sausages. They say they are the home of the best sausages in the city and it is tough to argue with them. They have about 20 different varieties, including the usual plus rare treats like turkey apple and barley. They make the sausages and smoke them right there, so you never have to worry about freshness. If sausages ain’t your thing, they do sell other meats like ham and turkey(just in time for the holidays!). Careful — they are closed on Sundays!
