We never get out to this place often enough. Each time we do go we stock up on some lovely things. Lots of great ingredients and supplies no matter what your slant on Caribbean is, as it means different things to different people. Consider, if you will, the two main characters in this scenario. One originally from Guyana — raised on food that is influenced African, Indian, French, Amerindian, Chinese, British, Dutch, Portuguese, Caribbean, American and Nepalese culture. Imagine if you will moving from South America to Canada and spending the next 15 years of your life not seeing a single mango… The other character, from Canada, but raised in Toronto and then Newfoundland, where the food is fairly unique, but also full of influences from other parts of the world based on the major historical trade routes and their products, such as salt fish(Portugal) and the Rum(Guyanese and Jamaican). Flash forward a few years to Vancouver, where our two characters have met and fallen in love. Each very different in background, yet somehow extremely a like in many ways. We have a theory that some culture is worldwide, not just related to a nation. Consider the ‘Caribbean’ way of life — great food, relaxed attitudes, and loving friendly people. In Guyana, they refer to the salt fish as ‘Canada fish’. In Newfoundland we refer to the Guyanese rum as ‘rum’. ;-) Caribbean market offers both of us a great selection of all the things we want and need to make great meals or to even port us back to places that are familiar. Surprisingly, although not strange, the Caribbean Market also stocks ‘Newfie’ food such as the Purity brand of cookies and syrups. Spices & sauces, meat & fish, juices and tinned goods. Soda drinks from all over, Jamaican patties(roti). Breads, baking supplies and produce including a great selection of scotch bonnet and bird peppers. Prices are very decent, considering some of the items here you will find no where else in Canada except maybe Toronto. Service is very friendly… Brilliant shop.
