Cathedral of The Transfiguration

It’s a saddening site to be honest. Having grown up not far from here, I was actually in attendance when Pope John Paul blessed the cathedral in 1984. To see it over 30 years later still incomplete, and not maintained and already falling apart.
There was such promise when this structure was finished, it looked like the start of something beautiful. Hopefully all issues can be resolved, and the damage can be repaired, and the cathedral can return to the church.
I’d have hoped to have seen this done already, now I just hope to see it in my lifetime. The money from the sale of the surrounding land was supposed to go toward the finishing off the cathedral, it doesn’t appear to have made it, yet the land has been sold and almost fully developed, people live in homes and condos facing this expense disheveled remnants of a dead

It is just so sad to see how this building had been deserted since the last service in June 25, 2006.
Now surrounded by residential development as the «Cathedral» deteriorating over the years with the lack of maintenance.
Now the Church Bell still rings everyday and the future of this building is still unknown. Maybe it would be a community centre and library one day? And for now it is a nice decorating structure for the residents of Cathedraltown.

We were on a two-​week vacation in Toronto and happened to see this cathedral at a distance while driving on the 404. My sister had mentioned something about a movie being made there. My husband and I decided to check it out and surely, John Carpenter’s 1994 movie «In The Mouth of Madness,» one of my favorite horror movies, was partially filmed on the church grounds. This impressive piece of architecture was actually a Slovak Byzantine Rite Roman Catholic cathedral and not an eastern orthodox church as I had originally thought, and has an interesting history. It was blessed by the Pope John Paul II in 1984, but was stripped of its cathedral status in 2006 as a result of a dispute. See:
We did not have the opportunity to visit the interior of the church as it is closed to the public at this time so I am rating it strictly from the appeal of the exterior of the cathedral. Some exterior parts of the church are obviously in need of repairs (steps leading to the cathedral, etc.), but that didn’t stop us from spending an hour on the grounds admiring this beautiful piece of architecture and enjoying our unlimited photo opportunities. It’s in Cathedraltown, a subdivision of the Town of Markham, in the Region of York, just north of the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). It’s certainly worth the short drive if you live in Toronto or are there for a visit. I still find it hard to believe that I did not know about this cathedral when I used to live in Toronto.
