Unprofessional, barely polite staff serving good coffee and decent food. 1. Staff — Reminded me of those old diner waitresses who make a thing out of being rude and unprofessional and chew their gum obviously while leaning on the booth and spouting«Whaddl’ahave?» in a «could care less» tone of voice. 2. Food — I had the chicken wrap, my boyfriend had the veggie burger and soup. We both liked our food, but I wouldn’t rave about it. 3. Coffee — The coffee is great! They want it to be the best. It’s all fair trade, it’s local, it’s ethical, it only protests peacefully, and I’m sure it won’t lie to you or sleep with your husband. 4. Atmosphere — Very granola. This place stands for so many things that I can’t tell what it’s really standing for. Ethical treatment of animals, don’t do this this and this while you’re pregnant, gluten free, vegan friendly, sustainable everything, down with government etc. Overall, I wouldn’t go back. My dislikes outweighed my likes, but they definitely have a niche market.

One of my favourite places for coffee in James North, Hamilton. With a constant rotating selection of art on the walls, and an eclectic mixture of decorations and furniture, this building boasts a great kitchen, bean roaster, theater, classes, rented office space, patio, Saturday Organic Farmer’s Market and a library of ‘zines and books. Did I mention that a local publication called Mayday Magazine is published here? Well, it is. All food and coffee is local, fair trade and tasty. A decent selection of microbreweries too. A lot of the workers are volunteer based, so do not expect a knowledgeable barista or bartender, but the cook staff in the Bread and Roses café are amazing. I’ve seen some great, small, and intimate shows here in the past. Conscious Grooves was always a great night of DJ sets and people dancing or relaxing on the sofas.
