Don’t eat here. They don’t know how to make Japanese food. Period. What the«eff» happened to Umai Sushi? Used to be amazing. The food is literally inedible. The rolls look like they were made by children or beginners(piles of mush, falling apart). The tempura is mostly baking soda and is not edible. The soup and noodles are flavourless. Do not pay money for this food. You can do better yourself, at home, with a «Beginners Guide to Japanese Food» video. It is everything that Japanese food shouldn’t be: messy, flavourless and inedible.

Really nice staff and great service but the food was horrible. There was random rice grains in my seaweed salad. The chicken karaage was random deep fried bits with only a few actually having chicken inside. The sashimi the salmon was ok but the tuna was frozen still. The rolls were really sloppy and I we stopped eating. I guess it is hard to find good sushi in Sudbury.

I remember a time when this place had the best food and unmatched service. That was around 2010 – 2011. Now, it’s hit or miss. I dined here today and I’m pretty confident in saying that I won’t be dining here again. The side plates given to my table were not clean, the sushi easily fell apart, the hot entrée was overcooked, and the rice served with the entrée was burnt. Our server only came to the table to serve our food and give us water, that’s it. No refilling of our glasses, no asking us how our meal was. Instead, she sat at another table in the restaurant and stared at her laptop. I can’t speak for everyone, but I dine at restaurants to have a great meal and great service too. Today I received none of those things. I’m supremely disappointed at what has become of this establishment because it used to be a fine gem in Sudbury.

The Good: The décor is quite nice and reminiscent of good sushi placed I’ve eaten at in Toronto. The service is usually good, but a little awkward. The presentation of the food is really nice, but unfortunately you don’t only eat with your eyes. The Bad: The prices are somewhat steep for Sudbury. Also, those looking for all-you-can-eat will be disappointed. The Ugly: Umai used to be a good sushi restaurant about four/five years ago. The management must have changed since then because the quality of the sushi is quite poor. The rice, the most important aspect of a good sushi restaurant, is simply not good, and the quality of the maki rolls is deplorable. The rolls often fall apart and are sparsely covered in rice. The quality of the fish has also dropped and sometimes comes out still frozen. The seaweed paper was chewy and stale. I do not recommend dining here. I recommend Sapporo instead.

Best sushi in Sudbury without a doubt. It’s not all-you-can-eat and the price can be a bit high but you get what you pay for. Unfortunately they don’t have any menu online but you’ll be presented with many options at the restaurant. I love the lunch and dinner combos and find it to be the best in for value and quantity. They do phone ahead take out so make sure you grab a menu on your way out.
