Visited Spicy Garden again the other night for some late night post swimming Chinese goodness! The place was packed at 930 pm on a Sunday! As always — great customer service & efficient! Spicy pork wontons, green onion cakes, double cooked pork with garlic rice, mango pudding, and Ginger & egg white custard! Mmm… Makes for interesting morning breath that even scares the cat away!

There are different kinds of Chinese restaurants. There are a billion of us. I mean beyond steam table buffets and egg foo yung/chicken ball joints. Spicy Garden is a Noodle Shop, the Chinese(Hong Kong) version of a diner. So, if you’re looking for fast inexpensive plentiful comfort food(Chinese comfort food = congee/lo mein/fishball soup), Spicy Garden is a pretty good choice. Just like your favorite greasy spoon, stick to it’s strengths and you’re good to go, you can tell by the plentiful young Chinese clientelle. If you expect steakhouse at a diner, you pretty much have yourself to blame, even if it is on the menu.

I’ve been here a couple times, but I’m sad to say that the first visit was better than my more recent one. Spicy Garden is pretty large, and is a step up from regular no-frills Chinese restaurants, with its booth seating and colorful upholstery. But the quality of the food has gone down somewhat, in my opinion. That, or they jacked up the prices so noticeably that it just doesn’t really seem like a good deal anymore. My favorite dish at this restaurant is the prawn and peaches with mayo sauce on rice. It’s kind of heavy with the mayo sauce, but it’s really yummy. I like it because it’s different; you don’t normally find peaches in your seafood. But you feel a little weighed down afterwards, as it’s not the lightest thing on the menu. And, like I said, I’m pretty sure they changed the price a bit … I can’t remember the exact numbers, but it’s definitely more than it used to be. Service is efficient though, and you don’t have to wait long for your meal. They also have tv screens at ceiling level, usually tuned into a sports channel.
