If you’re getting a full cut & colour job done be prepared for a pretty big tab, but it’s well worth it. They offer student discounts as well, if I’m not mistaken, and I got 10% which was very kind of them. Mine was done silver + cut by Melissa and she did an amazing job getting the colour even(without killing it with excessive bleach) especially given that my hair started off about 3 different tones. They also offer you coffee/tea/water the moment you walk in, and the stylist is always checking in on you to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. And the whole place, including the bathroom, is very clean and doesn’t have the chemical smell you might expect. If you’re a student on a budget, this is maybe a once-in-a-while type thing. But if you’ve got the money, I can’t think of a better way to spend it.

After reading reviews, I decided to get my haircut by Barb. She’s very easy to talk to, is a good listener and wants to do whatever it takes to achieve the look you are going for. She’s very experienced and skilled. She took the time to introduce me to the products she was using(Neuma) and how they are very good on her skin compared to the many products she’s been through.

In one appointment, Melissa did an incredible job bringing my hair back from a really unhealthy and cheap-looking series of colours. I’ve just had my second appointment with her and am thrilled again with the thorough job she does. The colour grows out beautifully and my roots(I am naturally quite dark with dyed blonde hair) were barely noticeable after 10 weeks. The depth and natural-look of my colour exceeded my expectations and has been a dramatic improvement from colours I’ve had with other stylists. I would recommend Melissa to anyone(her cuts are great too!), but especially blondes. The salon is also beautiful, with friendly staff, great product selection, and a cool atmosphere.

I have been coming here since January and I really love my stylist Morgan! He’s so kind and gives me great cuts! I have curly hair so it has taken me a while to find a good stylist — I always leave here looking fabulous and my hair still looks good when I do it at home the next day. The prices are very reasonable and they even offer a new discount. They carry kevin Murphy as well as Neuma products which is really a great line that will last you months. I will definitely be coming back!

Unfortunately the salon I usually go to was closed every Monday and it did slipped my mind. I’m desperately need of a haircut that day due to an event I’m attending later that night. Then I came across this salon which was open and convenient enough that I get an appointment in 30 mins after I made a call, and I’m 5 minutes away from the location… I was so relieved after. Brent was the one who did my hair and he did an absolutely awesome job.

From the moment I arrived it was an amazing experience. welcomed with an offer of a beverage and I promptly saw Kelli B for a haircut — she is wonderful — charming, creative and a great listener. She knows so much about products especially Kevin Murphy and Neuma — we had a great conversation about everything including what nasty chemicals are out there in beauty care products. I ended up with some Neuma products — which are great and a perfume oil — Sweetgrass. I wish I lived here — I am visiting from Toronto and googled«best hair salons in Edmonton». I am so glad I chose them — my layered short hair cut is fabulous! Thanks Kelli and everyone at the lovely Ponytails and Horseshoes… next time I’m in Edmonton I’ll be sure to book here. My haircut also cost less than my Toronto stylist and included a relaxing scalp massage.

It was time to come back to PoHo to experience it all over again. This time I had Kelli as my stylist, who was very nice and friendly and didn’t give me that stare I usually get when I tell stylists that I need a hairstyle with very little upkeep. She’s basically a sweet heart. My only issue is that, again, my appointment started around 20 minutes late. I forget the name of the woman who washed my hair but the massage I got was to die for! I didn’t want to leave that sink! The cut was was more of a clean up and Kelli did a great job, my hair feels a lot healthier. PoHo expanded since I was last there.(I mean it has been two years!) Now, instead of having a small room with maybe 10 chairs, there’s two rooms with twice as many. Décor changed a little, but it’s still very«hipster» but they rock it. My experience was better than last time. I really appreciate Kelli not pushing products on me when I went up to pay — I can’t afford $ 42 hair spray as a student. I also got another student discount(Thanks Kelli!) an my total was around $ 70 with tip again. The only reason why I took a star off, was because when I was waiting for the chair to open up I could hear the conversation the receptionists were having and they were basically making fun of a lady who had called in for an appointment. Talking about how crazy she is, and doesn’t she know how busy the place is and how she needs to check herself, how she always calls in and tries to get last minute appointments, then cancels and how annoying it is and how they shouldn’t even schedule her anymore etc. Things like that were being said and I understand that everyone rants, I just don’t think it should have been said in front of customers, at the very least not so blatantly.

I had my hair cut and styled by Curtis. I should have just got up from the chair and left when he pulled out the razor clipper and started to shave off the ‘baby hair’! I have never had any stylist ever use razor clippers on my hair and for good reason because this action was totally unnecessary! Curtis is a very genteel person and I wish I could give a better rating because he is so personable; however, his skill level needs to be brought up to industry standard.

Just to update you folks, Ponytails and Horseshoes has also added Neuma products to their line, which are vegan and cruelty free as well. This is what my hairdresser used on my hairs last time. I have not had my hair coloured here yet so am not sure what product line they use for hair colour, but as far as coming in for a shiny, beautiful, cruelty free cut, I feel as though P+H has my back! They also offer $ 5 bang trims(and I believe that $ 5 is donated to charity) between cuts, and I just went for one yesterday which will tide me over until September! LUV U PONYTAILS + HORSESHOES!!!

This place continues to impress me, visit after visit! So, a few years ago my hairstylist of choice decided to pursue a different career entirely. I was frustrated by this because I had had some pretty bad experiences in the past with other salons and hairstylists. So, I chose to search on Unilocal and read the reviews. This is how I ended up finding Ponytails + Horseshoes: the Unilocal reviews were so awesome that I couldn’t resist, particularly given that I was planning on spending a pretty penny on a good haircut. I have now had three haircuts there and have been very impressed with the service that I have gotten with Brent. He gave me a low maintenance style on three different occasions which has been wonderful as I really don’t want to spend too much time getting prepped for my day in the morning! In addition, I’m a big fan of the fact that they carry products that do not contain any of the compounds in them that I’m trying to avoid in my personal care products. I even love how my Renu shampoo and conditioner smells which is a wonderful way to start my day! The only thing that could make my visits better is if I could afford(and make the time) to visit the salon more frequently.
