This pizza and donair shop is located on 82 st on the northside. From the outside, it doesn’t look like anything much at all, as it is beside a Taco Time and a converted 7 – 11 that sells junk. But looks can be deceiving. Upon entering the restaurant I was taken aback at how clean and bright it was. Much cleaner than any donair shop I’ve ever been in, that’s for sure. The walls are covered with vintage Hollywood 50’s posters and the menu is neatly written in chalk above the cashier. I have been here exactly twice so far. The first time I ordered a cheese donair and poutine. The workers there at the time were two friendly, enthusiastic young guys who put together my order in record time. Both the donair and poutine were delicious and the price was decent. The second time I went here was different. I ordered a bacon/cheeseburger combo. The workers this time were an older couple who were almost completely apathetic and seemed to have a could-care-less attitude. My order took 15 – 20 minutes to arrive and the burger itself was nothing to write home about. If you are near 82nd street and your stomach is rumbling, give Checkmate Pizza and Donair a try. Just keep in mind that your experience will depend largely on who is working there at the time.
