I stopped by The Lazy Pickle recently to grab a sandwich. I got the Mom’s Roast Beef on a gluten-free bun($ 7.50). I was so disappointed by the size of the sandwich. It was the size of a McDonald’s hamburger(i.e. tiny). The gluten-free bun was like a hamburger bun and it was dry and crumbly. They were not that generous with the meat, and the roast beef is deli meat, not real roast beef like I was expecting. It does come with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and your choice of mustard and/or mayonnaise. It also comes with a pickle wedge. I found the sandwich really expensive for what you get. The toppings were fresh, and the deli meat was shaved really thin, the way I like it, but the sandwich was just so small. The staff were super nice and friendly. And I like seeing small local businesses succeed, so I may return to try other items, but my first experience was not the greatest. It’s in the same strip mall as Aladdin’s and it’s where the Malak Bakery used to be. There is free parking in the strip mall, but it’s really hard to get in and out if it’s busy. The Lazy Pickle will reimburse you for parking in the adjacent Medical Centre Parking Lot for up to 30 minutes if you spend $ 10 or more at their store. They will reimburse you for up to 60 minutes if you spend more than $ 15.

So my bf and I stopped here for a quick bite /takeout. This place was cute and clean and they seemed to have a good selection of menu items. Sadly we were disappointed with our sandwiches. The bread was dry and my gluten free bun was so dry it was falling apart. The sandwiches were made out of deli processed meat, the avocado spread tasted stale, and there was nothing fresh about them. They were in a cooler and simply taken out… who knows how long they were sitting there. Overall I was not impressed and my gf sandwich gave me a tummy ache. I won’t be back here unfortunately even though it’s gf.

I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to discover this local gem! All I can think of is how many times I needed a great gluten-free take out meal, only to munch on a larabar in my car instead. Well, no more! I stopped in on my way home from work and was happy to find that they were still open around 6pm. I know that seems early, but for a mom and pop shop you never know. I was greeted warmly by Stuart who co-owns this adorable sandwich shop and café with his wife Julie. The place was empty when I got there, but three other customers were waiting once I left, so I’m hoping they are doing well. They specialize in sandwiches and have a great gluten-free menu. I took home the special which was a delicious chicken chilli for an amazing price(about $ 5 for a large) and decided to try the Royal Turkey which was on a gluten free bun with smoked turkey, cranberry salsa, swiss cheese and apple. It was delish! I really appreciated that Stuart also asked me if I had a cheese allergy. Both the chilli and the sandwich were amazing and I can only imagine what their other stuff is like! They have baked goods(I totally regret not getting the gfree blueberry tarts), amazing frozen pizzas with tons of toppings(I picked up a gfree and dairy free combination that looks great!), and a huge amount of gluten free products. I felt so understood and at home here! Stuart mentioned the gfree bread they get is from a local bakery in Gatineau and said they really like to go with local suppliers which I really love. I can’t wait to stop by again and try something else on the menu!
