I stop into this little café for coffee every time I’m in the area. But I’ve never checked in to this particular café on Unilocal, only the market. I do love their pain au chocolat and usually leave grumpy if there are none available when I am there(ha ha j/k). The café offers all kinds of bits and bites to eat for a snack or even light lunch. Sweet treats and good java are right up my alley. This particular time I stopped in for a Hot Chocolate Fest hot cocoa. Their mile high offering(topped with all things evil) needed to be consumed with a spoon. Since I was driving I had to inhale most of it before I got to my car. It definitely hit the spot. Worth the trek.

Three words: pain au chocolat. … wait, is au a word? Reason you wished you paid more attention in highschool french #563. Butchering of the french language aside, this place took 4 stars simply because of this decadent little morsel of chocolatey goodness. The bakery is local and these cats bring in the pain au chocolat frozen and bake them up every day. How do I know this? Because the people we stay with in Calgary do the same. They are good people. And sure… it looks like a plain ol’ chocolate croissant, but something about this puffy little treasure just hooks me. I ate seven… I was staying in the neighbourhood for three days… you do the math. It’s flaky and delicious and well worth a trip into this spot. The rest of the café? Well for one, «café» is a stretch, it’s a counter in an organic grocer. But on the flip side, it’s a really nice organic grocer so… yeah. There’s a few tables outside to plunk yourself down and whisper sweet nothings to your pain au chocolat. It’s also across the hall from a wine store… which is never a BAD thing. The coffee is ok. Nothing to write home about but a decent cup. All in all, the little coffee counter is pretty run of the mill — lovely but ultimately forgettable if it wasn’t for that tasty little pastry. Bravo for making me gain 5 lbs in Calgary Vie Café. Keep stocking that chocolate goodness and i’ll see you again next trip!

This is the closest café to my house but I think that this place is over-rated. It was okay, but not great. The selection is limited, and there is no where to sit which kind of sucks but you can wander around Market 17 while sipping your latte so that’s nice. I thought a really neat thing is that they give a discount to patrons that live in the condo buildings above the café. I found the staff not terribly enthralled with their job and I felt like the barista was a bit stand off-ish. This isn’t my favorite place in the city, but I’ll come here if there is no coffee at home.

Vie Café is a little corner of happiness. I mean little. It sits, tucked in the corner of Market17 on the main floor of the Casel building on 17th Ave SW. They have some great pastries and make a good latte. What else do you need? I only wish that I lived closer. Keep up the great work!

Vie Café is located inside Market 17 in the Casel Marche building, and I am totally in love with this place. Not only do I love everything about Market 17, having this delicious little café inside makes my trips to the market amazing. It has quickly become a habit on mine to wonder on over to the café early Saturday and Sunday mornings for their fresh out the oven baked items… I mean who doesn’t love a warm fresh croissant! The have a great selection of coffees and teas to suit anyones tastes, but make sure you pair it with one of their many baked goods! If you can’t find me on weekend mornings, this is where I’ll be! My favourite quality about this café, it’s all local! Do your part and support local!
