As far as location, selection and general alcohol knowledge go, I think this particular Liquor Depot does a pretty darn fine job of all three-not to mention it’s huge! Wine selection: I’m still learning about my wines, but it’s easy enough to come out with something at Liquor Depot. If I’m not sure what I should be coming out with, there’s usually someone on hand to help. I wouldn’t put it on par with some of my favourite boutique wine shops, but its pretty good nonetheless! Beer selection: When I’m in search of a case of something local or crafty, I can usually find it in the coolers at the back. You may not find the most obscure brands here, but there’s enough to please most. Spirits selection: Again, they stock a variety of brands, types and flavours(even Alberta distilled spirits like Banff Ice Vodka). Go look in the whiskey/scotch area off in the back left hand corner. I’m still learning much about my whiskeys and scotches… but that corner just looks impressive. Other: Not other alcohol… just other in general. This location will often advertise different tastings and things(maybe that’s what really goes on in the impressive back corner?). When I lived down by 17th Ave, I enjoyed the fact that it was only a couple of blocks away. Now that I’m farther away, I still enjoy the fact that it’s open until 2am… that comes in handy.

As the song goes, «it’s 9 o’ clock on a saturday…» and you’re looking for that perfect bottle of wine. Well, this particular outlet just may have it. I’m not a drinker, but I do enjoy a glass or a beer once in awhile. But more importantly, I do like to gift wine often. That’s where these people come in. Unlike most liquor stores, this place actually has regular tastings and lessons for their staff. This way, if you want something nice as a gift or just want to have something great for a drinking game, ask any staff member, they’ll probably have a decent suggestion. By the way, keep an eye out for their special tasting nights, done about once or twice a month. It’s a great time to try out some fine liquors and so on.

I will tell you this LIQUORBARN, you got Juice. For a liquor to be laid back despite having to be located in a shady area of 17th ave, you and your exmployees make every visitor feel relaxed with your drink/liquor specials and friendly employees. Stock girls in colourful stockings and the Australian cash people, all friendly. Question: whats with liquor stores and their inability to let customers use their bathrooms? I wouldn’t ordinarily write a review(or even check in) to a liquor store, but my experience at this location was exceptional. Not only did they have a huge selection of liquor(always a bonus) but the staff was amazing. Everyone asked if they could help us, and when I actually asked a question, the employee was thorough and went above and beyond to show us a few selections she particularly liked that might be of interest. Similarly, when paying at the til, the cashier gave advice regarding one of my selections. Even though I went with my original choice, I appreciated her suggestion. Not that I frequent liquor stores often, but I’d definitely come back to this location ;)

Every time I have had a question for the staff at this store they have been great. If they see me wandering around the wine section with a lost look on my face they come over and ask if they can help. They always do. One staff member let me taste a couple of the wines before buying, which was great. Another suggested a very nice wine based on what I was looking for. I am very happy with their knowledge of wines. As for the rest of the store, I think they have a pretty good selection and have better prices than the Liquor Barn by Safeway(on 12 Ave and 8 St). For someone who doesn’t have a car, I am glad this store is within walking distance.

These guys have a decent selection, but their prices are just too high. I hope they’re making money these days because most people can’t afford their products. They have to lower prices if they want to stay in business because I know of a few liquor stores in town that are way cheaper… Shop around.
