The Family of Man statues downtown have long since piqued my interest. Every time I drive by, I wonder what these tall, lanky, leggy sculptures are meant to represent. And yet, because I’m driving by, I’d forget about them again once they left my site. Well, yesterday I decided it was time to make them a destination, rather than something I saw passing by. They feel even more peculiar up close, yet friendly! They’re all playing and holding hands together. Maybe that’s why I’ve always thought they were oddly-shaped children. What I found out, though, is that this group of sculptures is called The Family of Man and were made by Mario Armengal. They were donated to the City of Calgary and now sit at the site of the old Board of Education building. I’d like to sit and ponder them on a warmer day… there’s one in particular, the one waving and looking like it’s taking a step, that would make a fun photo op with someone mirroring the position. I’m still not entirely sure what to think of them. When I make up my mind, maybe I’ll have another star to give them. Unilocal’s 30 Day Challenge: 25⁄30
