Irresistibly drawn to the neon sign advertising a $ 4.99 biryani special, I recently visited this small restaurant off 36th St NE, across the road from Superstore. This place only has a half dozen or so tables, but seems to do a brisk delivery business. The cuisine is Afro-Indian, which I must admit I am not too familiar with, but seems to involve meat(e.g. beef ribs) and veg preps(e.g. Mogo) that you don’t see at Indian restaurants. I assume this how Indian expats in Ghana eat? The staples like butter chicken, daal, and biryani are still there, and that was my gastronomic starting reference point. The«lunch» size portion served to me was too much for one sitting, and let me tell you, I’m no hen pecker. For $ 4.99 they get four stars right there! The plentiful basmati rice was a mix of plain and saffron… check marks there. Rather than having the meat and veg blended into the rice like a typical biryani though, the chicken and potato stew sat atop the rice. Is the the African influence or a culinary slapdash? Either way, slightly disappointing but not the end of the world. The tomato base for the stew had really good depth of flavour, but was primarily herbaceous rather than spicy. Next time I’ll ask them to turn up the heat, and yes I WILL be back with price, quantity and quality like this. I may even have some mogo, whatever that is.
