Gummi Boutique

The kicker for me are the Charlie & Wonka chocolate toy trucks with chocolate inside — got this as a backburner for a few Christmas gifts.
And it’s not all candy and gummy bears; they even sell 12-​pack can of my beloved Coke Cherry… and the disgusting Vanilla flavour too.
In the back, they’ve got an impressive stand alone rack of Pez everything… even Hello Kitty, unfortunately.
Willfully, while waiting for my poutine the other dady, I resisted the urge lol. Save the sweets for some ice cream and crepes.

Try not smile in this store. I dare you! Are you strong enough to frown and be dismal while surrounded by the happiest colours and flavours from around the world? I lied. Don’t try this! Do yourself the best favour and give into the candy. Let yourself be taken over by the bright, magical colours of Gummi Boutique.
The feeling I get when I walk into Gummi Boutique is way better than a kid in a candy store. I’m and ADULT in a candy store! I can buy all the candy I want and nobody’s gonna stop me!!! :D
They’ve got a cool selection of eclectic Candies from all over the world. Plenty of Japanese candy (by far the most adorable packaging the world has ever seen), all the way to European import bars from chocolate giants like Cadbury!
Did you know that Euro Cadbury is created with a higher percentage of cocoa and doesn’t use high fructose corn syrup like the American versions do? Did you also know that might be entirely incorrect because because I was so high on excitement thinking about the sugar rush that would soon follow to even think to listen to anything the insanely knowledgeable dude working there was telling me. I don’t remember, but the fact is that HE does and there IS a difference. You should talk to the people in this store because they’re awesome. Think about this for a second, friends — their job is to hang out with and be the city’s experts in CANDY. How crazy cool is that?!
Gummi Boutique ups the «What?! I had no idea you could get that here!» anti to unbelievable new levels. They’ve probably heard of it.
They’ve got some fun, gimmicky stuff like lollipops with ants and a good assortment of strange soda flavours like Bacon or Peanut Butter. Neither of which I found that enjoyable… But I’m not sure what I expected. While they’ve got gimmicky stuff they’re by no means all about it.
You can find some fantastic candy in this store all with these incredible throwbacks to that time you lived in Germany, or your best friend in Australia used to get these things. Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke, All the Coke…-a-cola, they’ve got it!
And DUDES, you know I’m talking to you. Set yourself apart from the pack and work a visit to Gummi Boutique into your date night. It’s far too enjoyable experience to not share with someone. Everyone goes out to the movies, but not everyone stops by Gummi Boutique first to hand pick the coolest bulk candy on the planet.

What can I say about Gummi Boutique? Living a few doors away from their Kensington location is proving to be dangerous to me, my sweet tooth, and my lack of willpower. They have pretty much everything you could possibly imagine. Apart from the usual chocolate and gummi candies, they have an incredibly impressive assortment of imported candy bars. (i have a friend who used to buy Whatchamacallit bars every time he went to the States because he couldn’t get them here. Well look no more, Ed!). As well, they have a really fun selection of novelties, and what is likely to be Calgary’s greatest assortment of fake mustaches. They have a mustache for every occasion… even pink ones! Remember that favorite candy from your childhood that you thought went off the market years ago? Well, look no further… chances are, you’ll find it here! Haven’t had a cherry or vanilla Coke in a while? Look no further!
Friendly staff and a super fun environment, James has done a fantastic job with Gummi Boutique, and deserves all the success he gets.

Whenever I walk into Gummi Boutique, it’s quite literally like being a kid in a candy store. How so?
a) It’s a candy store.
b) I’m really good at being as excited (or more so) as a 5 yr old about candy!
Last Christmas, I loaded up on vintage candies for aunts and uncles. How did I know they were vintage? Easy. I walked in and asked if they had anything that people 55 – 65 would enjoy from their childhood. Gummi Boutique stocked me up. Sure enough, there were squeals of delight as they opened their candy presents. «I remember these!!!»
Beyond that, there’s just too much fun to be had here. Jelly Bellies in bulk, plenty of other gummis also in bulk, gigantic gummy bears that I’m not even sure you’d know how to eat all of it, a section of bacon flavoured candy… oh dear. I’m getting a sugar rush just thinking about it again!
Tip: If you ever need massive amounts of Jelly Bellies, forego the bulk bins and go for the bigger bags. It’s one kind per bag, but it saves you a bit of $$. They don’t keep those up front though, those babies are in the back!

This place is right next door to my best friend’s flat, so it is way too easy to stop in here when I’m pet sitting for her.
There is just SO many things to look at and buy, from tried and true classic candies, to totally bizarre novelty candies and gifts (anyone need a pink fuzzy moustache for a party?), to an entire wall of bulk bins. Yum!
Prices seem a bit high, but they’re not ridiculous, and there’s always sometime new to try out. The staff are very unobtrusive and polite, and happy to let you browse to your hearts’ content. If you have questions though, they’re very on the ball about answering them — really, a perfect combination!
It’s got a fun, brightly painted and tidy interior, which also makes it a joy to be in this shop.
Unilocalers get a 10% discount on bulk candy for checking in, too, so that’s another draw to keep me going in here to satiate my sweet tooth!

I had to write an update… the staff here are awesome. They are helpful without being pushy or in your face.
James at the til was a rockstar. I did not know Unilocalers got a 10% discount for checking in. I am unable to check in anywhere these days as my new BB does not have a Unilocal app which really blows! James took my word for it and my bill for my wad of sour candy came down!

Candy is love!

I loves me a candy store and now that I have kids, entering one is justified in my own mind. Something for everyone here including gifts and ideas for birthday party loot bags. Some very unique candies and tons of jelly bellies as well as some harder to find items from my youth. I feel no shame in admitting we left with 3 bags of candy with one of them being mine (tee hee). Every once in awhile it’s OK to be a kid in a candy store :).

How come I never heard of this place before?
Candy heaven is the first thought that comes to mind when I was thinking of what to write in this review. One wall is filled with all these wonderful bulk candy bins that you can scoop into either a plastic bag or a cute box (for a $ 1 extra) and afterwards you pay by weight.
The other areas of the store are filled with other fun and different candy (I can’t describe more since my attention was based on the bulk candy station)
I grabbed a box and went down memory lane feeling like a kid as I scooped out numerous selections that I actually haven’t had since I was a child.
It was a delightful experience that I am sure to enjoy… until my candy stash runs out.

I came here to write about the Vanilla Coke but Teagan P. beat me to it.
Still, pretty amazing. There’s also Cherry Coke and I discovered on my second visit that there’s a retro fridge in the back where you can get cans of those items individually without having to pay for a whole case.
The candy selection is amazing, the staff is a lot of fun, great style and décor. More people need to know about this place!

They sell vanilla coke, nuff said.
