I’ve been to this restaurant before when I used to work at BCHydro. I’m reviewing the takeout service this time. I called for lunch takeout. I had to wait for several rings before my call was picked up. When I finally reach them I was placed on hold for like 2 minutes. For someone waiting at the other end of the line even 10 seconds is a long time.(Try it. Close your eyes for 10 seconds.. it feels like forever!). Anyway it was all worth it. I ordered penang curry(was a bit salty for my tastes), stuffed chicken wings and pad thai. They’re all yummy. You also get 10% discount if you pick up.

Small thai restaurant, family owned business, affordable food but serving are small, decors are usual thai eatery actually the place is a bit crowded i love the the tables wood but the top has tiles that makes it look neat and easy to clean… friendly service, busy but quick. line up when we came in for lunch… noise level is a bit loud its because all windows are open, very small place and the main road is just over 2 meters from where we were sitting, not good for large group bec its so small accept cash and cards, they have like 2 tables for outside sitting bit i dont think anyone would love to eat outside, wifi by shaw open, the washroom needs upgrade already old… dark but clean. .foodwise it was good, we had the spicy coconut chicken straw mushroom soup, veggie spring roll, chicken curry and phad thai… good and spicy. the server always check on clients and always refill the water. street parking, reasonable price for the size of serving. .owners speaks little english with a very high thai accent but i guess that is not a problem coz we had our orders and bill correctly… i recommend declaterring the place… big potential for this business quality of dishes plus the friendly attitude of the owner… way to go… ill be back soon…

This place is regularly crowded. I heard that this is owned by a team of husband and wife which makes it endearing to come here. I see the husband serving so the wife must be cooking. Very admirable eh. Is been coming here for 3 years now. Sometimes I come alone, occasionally I’m with friends. They have lunch menu. They’re noodles and curry dishes are good. I highly recommend this place. It reminds me of a lot of things: it’s a bliss when you’re doing what you love to do, that passion is the secret to a happy life, that dreams do come true and most especially that anything created out of love is delicious.

The décor leaves something to be desired. Service was attentive, food was good, would go back.

We came in on a Thursday around 5:30pm. There was 1 large group with a few smaller tables. Service: We were promptly seated by the older gentleman. We didn’t wait long to order. Our water is refilled sporadically. Atmosphere: A feeling of hole in the wall comes to mind. 5 fans to keep the place cool in the summer and 3 small ceiling heaters to keep the place warm in the winter. Definitely not a place to take your loved ones for anniversary dinner. Cleanliness: old furnitures, but clean. Taste: Average. We ordered a Phat Thai and a red curry. The phat Thai is a bit too wet and too acidic. The red curry is too creamy and not enough spice flavour. Portion: Smaller than most places. My fiancé and I can actually finished both dishes and a large rice. Overall value: Not worth it. It is OK if you happen to live in the area and need some Thai. I rather go back to the two Thai restaurants on Hastings by Gilmore. Likely not coming back again.

You would never guess from looking at the place but this place serves the best authentic Thai food! I always order a pad thai, curry, and there was this stuffed chicken dish that was soooo good

We love Lhy Thai! They are very friendly, and while the décor is a little worn(they really could use some paint, and new tables), we go for the food, not the atmosphere. It’s always busy on weekend evenings, because the food is so good. Our favourites are the red and yellow curries. It’s a family run restaurant, and they’re closed one day a week. If you call for take out and get the answering machine, call back, they’re probably serving another customer in the restaurant.

So good! — Amazing Thai Food — You can convert any meal to veggie by switching meat for tofu — The staff are pleasant and friendly — On top of all that, their meals are very reasonably priced!

After my hubby heard about this place through a friend, we decided to check it out. We got there around 7:30pm on a Saturday night and the restaurant was completely full which was a promising sign. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait too long for a table. The place clearly hasn’t been updated in years. The«no smoking section» sign from the 80’s was still on the wall and the cushioned chairs had lost all of its«cushion» over the years. However, we didn’t mind it too much and felt the restaurant to be quite cozy. The service is a bit slow as it is a small family run business but the food did make up for it. The Pad Thai was delicious as was the Green Curry with chicken. Although, the curry was on a thinner side than what we’re used to seeing. We also found the portion sizes to be on the smaller side compared to other Thai restaurants. However, the flavours were all on par. We would come back again if in the Burnaby/New West area.

#02 stuffed chicken wings(4)(deep-fried stuffed chicken wings with minced chicken and sweet and sour sauce) 4.5÷5 — better than what my expectation! Very crispy but a bit too oily. Most of the bones have been taken out already. #03 tod mon(4)(deep-fried fish cakes with cucumber salad and peanuts) 3⁄5 — the fish cakes were too mushy. I wish there were more texture to it. I liked it better with the sweet and sour sauce. #11 papaya salad 4.5÷5 — the portion was smaller than others. Good flavours. #14 tom kha gai 5⁄5 — I don’t think this is my first time having this but now I’m in love this it! The lemongrass and the spices were not too strong and overpowering(which most of them usually do). #27 Kang Karie Gai 4⁄5 — yellow chicken curry. This is bigger than the penang curry. #30 penang goong 5⁄5 — red curry with coconut milk and peanut sauce. Right amount of peanut sauce. Some of us order another one for lunch tomorrow #75 Phat Thai Gai(chicken pad thai) 4⁄5 — Smaller portion but there weren’t anything much other than the noodles. #81 Steamed Rice — They said they are serving mixed rice(with brown rice) but all of us could barely find any brown rice. We waited 30 min before our dishes to come(we were the only table). After that, the dishes came out fine. Too bad they don’t have the mango sticky rice. I want to have another Thai meal soon!

I’ve tried quite a few Thai places around the Vancouver area and We keep coming back to Lhy Thai as our favourite. The restaurant itself doesn’t look great because it’s so small and cluttered, but the food makes up for it! My husband I love coming to this place!

I don’t want to write a review about Lhy Thai for very selfish reasons — I don’t want the secret out. I don’t want line-ups out the door. On the other hand, Paul the owner is a sweet guy and he deserves whatever success comes his way. So here we go… I’ve been coming to Lhy Thai for years, often with my suitcase in tow, directly from the airport. I need my fix. I come for a few favorites, Tom Kha Goong being the one favourite I get every single time I come back. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Thailand, eaten at some great restaurants and food stalls over there, but nothing has toppled Lhy Thai’s Tom Kha as the best I’ve ever had. The flavours can only be described as magical, bursting with notes of lemongrass, galangal, coconut, thai chilies and whatever other secret ingredients the kitchen crams into this bowl of bliss. Hyperbole, yes, but do yourself a favour and try it before you write me off as a complete flake.

I’m looking at the reviews below and am surprised at done of the negative comments. I think the whole décor and feel if the place is perfect. Granted you won’t get the same taste you would were you floating down the Chao Phraya but for North America it’s been I think one if the most consistent and authentic Thai restaurants around. Sure not all the dishes are perfect but you get solid excellent seasoned regulars. The Pad Thai is tamarindy and the basil chicken is savoury. Always a go to place when I’m in the area.

I usually frequent another Thai restaurant in the area but since they were out of the one dish I really wanted… decided to give Lhy Thai a try again. One walk through the door and I was reminded of why we probably fizzled out of this place. The décor is not bad for a small family run restaurant. But I find it a little off putting to have a computer desk right at the front of the restaurant. And the computer is obviously not strictly for business as I remember seeing the young son sitting there years ago. It’s just weird. I also find that the owner isn’t all that friendly unless he knows you and on this occasion, it was basically the same thing. I don’t recall anyone saying hi. But, the food is decent. Since I was ordering food for a birthday dinner(mine!), I decided to order 5 dishes. A ton of food for just 2 people!!! Stuffed chicken wings, red curry, the chicken sauteed w/green beans and curry, pad thai and pineapple fried rice. The problem was that I never received my green beans(which I was really looking forward to) but another curry in it’s place. Didn’t feel like calling and sorting it out and the reality was that I wasn’t about to drive back to the restaurant to sort it out. The chicken wings were a little disappointing. I remember them being a lot tastier. These wings are stuffed with a pork mixture and then fried golden and served with a dipping sauce. What I really wanted tonight were the chicken wings from the other restaurant which are simply deep fried and then served with an amazing ketchup like sauce! The curries though, were very yummy. Especially the one we didn’t order. Oh well, I guess it was meant to be. Pad Thai is standard and the fried rice was alright. The description states chopped shrimp on top of the rice but what the use are dried shrimp(definitely an acquired taste). All in all, the food was good. Not fantastic but definitely solid. Would I go here again? Maybe if I was really craving Thai and other place is closed…

When my coworker asks me to go to lunch, she means go to Lhy Thai. Oh, see, here is another Thai restaurant with Thai in the name. They want me to know what I am in for. So my coworker’s daughter is allergic to peanuts. Wah, what is a life without peanuts? So to get her peanut fix we drive a bit to get here. Useful tip: call ahead. They do take reservations for lunch. This place is mini, so in order to get back in time, we make reservations to bypass the line up that crowds the slim hallway to get in. We always order from the Specials Menu. I get #2 Mild(because I am a wimp) while my coworker gets it medium. #2 is green curry chicken, a spring roll, a pork satay with a big mound of rice. Plus they give you a little side of cucumber in vinegar. This is the best bang for your buck. They have other dishes for the same price… a fried rice here, a phad thai there… but I am all about value. I have had the other dishes and I feel as though I need to scrape the plate while my stick thin coworker tells me she’s stuffed. The green curry is mildy spiced(because I asked them to do that) with tons of bamboo shoots and little shreds of chicken. I could drink this like soup it’s so good. I have no idea what’s in green curry… I always used to get yellow, but I like this way better. The satay is a good mouthful with a thick spread of peanut sauce on it. The spring roll is really crispy with a drizzle of a dipping sauce on it. Our waters are always refilled and the service is fast. Sometimes they get slammed and you have to wait a bit, but such is life. While their prices have gone up, they are still well below the other restos competing for your lunch time business.

For my Burnaby friends, the Penang curry is so good. Soooo good. I’m craving it and looking up recipes to make it myself. Not a destination restaurant by any means, but good for take-out. Their lunch specials seem like a great deal. The portion sizes are pretty darn small for what they charge and for a hole in the wall. But the Penang curry is sooo good. Its a red curry, dashed with coconut milk, milder than most curries and sweeter. It doesn’t have bamboo shoots in it, which is a plus for me. I got it with the chicken, nothing to complain about. Extra charge for the coconut rice(you will need it). On the other hand, the Pad See Ew was terrible. Burnt noodles, bad broccoli, oily and bland.

I can’t think of a reason not to give Lhy Thai 5 stars, other than I don’t want it to get any busier than it already is. We’d been told by countless peeps of Thai descent that this is their favourite and most authentic. So we went. And now we are regulars. The spring rolls, quite frankly, are to die for and may very well be the best in Vancouver. I kid you not. They are crispy and delicious, but what makes them stand out is the peppery flavour that is littered throughout the roll. When it meets up with the sweet chili sauce, magic occurs. Starting the meal this way sets you up for great success. Everything we’ve had there has been excellent. I wish they had Drunken Noodles, my favourite dish(Pad Kee Mao) but they don’t — and I’m okay with that, because everything is so tasty. Also on the menu? Phat Phuk. Say it loud, say it proud. If you’re reading this while sitting in the restaurant, by the time you are done giggling, they will have brought you your food and you’ll forget all about the funny name. The service is that good. Last time we were in there, we ordered our spring rolls and got them 30 seconds later. It was shocking(and delicious. Did I mention they were delicious?)
