Friday night I didn’t have any plans, as usual. Not wanting to spend a boring evening home alone, I decided to take a look on Meetup to see if anything was going on, and I discovered a trivia night at the Firefighters Public House. I love trivia nights, and being walking distance from Metrotown Station, it was very easy for me to get to. Perfect! The only problem was that I had no one to go with, but I didn’t want to let that stop me from having a good time, so I went alone. Sitting by myself, I was a little out of my comfort zone, but the place wasn’t very crowded, which made it a bit more comfortable. As I was alone(there didn’t seem to be anyone from Meetup around), I chose the team name«Jasmine is Awesome», which ended up being a very appropriate name. I was doing pretty well, considering I was a team of one, and after half a dozen questions, I was able to connect with another person from Meetup, so in the end I wasn’t alone and made a new friend. Team Jasmine is Awesome did really well, and we came in second, the first place going to a team of regulars, which had about six people in their group. Both first and second place teams win prizes, and our prize was a $ 15 gift certificate that we were able to apply to our bill that night. Also, I somehow ended up the winner of a dance off. During the course of the evening, the trivia host asked people to come to the front for a chance to win prizes, and the result was that I won a dance off and won a gift certificate for two free Coronas. I don’t drink beer, and one of the members of the winning team offered to buy it off of me. Two Coronas at the pub would cost over $ 11(plus tax!) so I offered him the gift certificate for $ 8, and he put $ 8 towards my bill. So due to my awesomeness, I ended up getting $ 23 off our bill. I had so much fun last night that I’ll definitely be back for trivia night. Due to the proximity of the Firefighters Public House to my home(yay for not having to pay extra transit zone fees in the evening!), I think I’ll make trivia night a regular thing. Instead of feeling depressed at not having plans on a Friday night, I’ll go to the gym for a quick workout after work, then hit up trivia night. The Firefighters Public House itself isn’t a great place – the food and drink are nothing special, and it doesn’t seem to be particularly busy, if Friday night was typical. So if I were simply rating the pub, I’d give it two or three stars. But I had a great time on Friday, and it’s awesome that a place so close to my home has trivia night on Friday nights, a night I’m often bored, so that bumps it up to four stars. Also, I kinda liked that it wasn’t crazy busy or noisy. It makes for a comfortable and relaxed environment, and you can actually have a conversation with your friends.

Honestly, I HATE going here, and the only reason I ever attend is because it’s the closest to the mall and my co workers have a bad taste. Firstly, this place is not welcoming, and I am genuinely curious to how they stay open. The staff isn’t the worst, but the lay out is reminiscent of somewhere where anyone under 45 years of age are allowed in. we went last weekend for a going away party, and we were first told we could have the right side of the bar since the party was going to be 40 +. When we got there; we found that the bar manager that we spoke to didn’t communicate the previous promise to the next manager, who was very rude and just not a nice person. During the evening, I kindly asked to buy 45 shots for our table, and if they had a special, the lady at the bar responded with«Special? Why would we? We don’t want young kids in here» with the MOST attitude applicable. Not wanting to get into a bad mood, I ordered 45 king kongs at her suggestion but she stopped half way and said they ran out of banana liqueur so we got 27 shots. When it came time to pay, I offered my Visa card and she literally said«figures» to me. The food is not terrible, but I wouldn’t recommend anything but the fries. Overall, if you can avoid this place. Avoid it. If not, get fries and beer!

It was the 2014FIFA World Cup when Brazil took on Mexico in the Group Stage. I was there just to watch a match with my friend. I ordered the California Chicken Burger from there at the time. The food was very delicious so I will give props to the chefs for this one. Then, the weird thing happened. Our waitress gave us the bill in advance. The problem was that we did not ask for it and she gave it to us right away. I was hoping she did not wanted us to leave since we were having a great experience at the restaurant when this happened. Then again, it goes to show that this is one of the restaurants that has great food, but poor service.

I’ll be honest, I was a bit skeptical to try this place out, but everything is worth a shot at least once. A couple friends and I went in on a Wednesday during their happy hour special. We each ordered a drink and I got an order of the chicken fingers. The chicken fingers were disgusting. They were over cooked and inedible. We told our waitress and she immediately apologized and said she would replace them. We said no and that we didn’t want anything, so she said she would take it off our bill. I appreciated that she took it off the bill but I’ll never try something off their menu again. The bar itself was nothing to write home about either. We quickly finished our drinks and looked for a new venue.

Service is friendly(and a bit sassy, haha). Food is pretty good. Drinks are varied. Pricing is fair. Plenty of space. Nice place for after work drinks for nearby office folks.

I came here for my 20th birthday in November. We came in for Lunch around 1PM, and the place was pretty quiet, not that I mind. The wait staff were very courteous and chatty, which I personally really enjoy. They weren’t small-talk chatty, but they made conversation like you had been friends for years and hadn’t seen each other in a long time. The food was really good, I got the Belgian Waffles. It came with the topping on the side(Jack Daniels syrup and Butter), which I’m happy they did because I personally like to choose how much of what I put on my meals. Their fries are absolutely delicious, as well, but I mean it’d be pretty difficult to make a disgusting tasting fry. In any case, their service was rather quick, and we got food and drinks rather quickly. Their mojitos are really well made, too! As a special birthday treat, the waitress treated me to what they call a «Muff Dive.» It’s a martini glass filled with whipped cream with a hidden shot within the mass of cream. It was a lot of fun, and made for a great time! I’ll definitely be coming here again. As for the night life, I’m not quite sure as I’ve only been here in the afternoon.

Came here on a Monday for Monday Night Football. There is a big screen, the crowd is a more mature older crowd as my friends and I were the youngest people there. Food wasnt bad, service was a bit slow. We got the nachos(great, we asked for extra cheese) and beef dip with yam fries. Would come back :) its a great place to go if you are looking for a chill place to watch sports. Prices are decent too! Across from Metrotown, tons of free parking and a rec center 2 mins walk to work off your food and drinks haha.

So the food here is pretty good. I’ve had 3 meals and all have been quite enjoyable and reasonably priced for what you get. The problem is their service. It’s beyond bad, all 3 occasions I’ve been there it’s been absolutely godawful, but the experience yesterday was the final straw, it was atrocious. We arrived at 12, and it’s not busy. Maybe 4 or 5 tables in the restaurant and the outside patio is closed. The waitress immediately brought us menus. At 12:05, she asks us our order. As it had been only been about 5 minutes a couple of our group hadn’t decided yet, so we tell the waitress that. She disappears, and we don’t see her again until we have to flag her down at 12:25 pm, where she take our order. The food then takes 20 minutes to make, and is on the table at 12:45. The meal was a tasty chicken club on focaccia with seasoned fries. I would have enjoyed it but had 10 minutes to wolf down half before eating the rest at my desk. Everything other than the food to this point has been terrible, so I left a 5% tip(to cover what she had to tip out). My colleague left a similarly small tip. The waitress, incensed with the tip, stalked off before taking everyone’s payments(ignoring the last 2 at our table) slamming the machine down on a nearby table. We had to flag her down again to make the final payment. As we left she mumbled sorry about the wait. I couldn’t bring myself to respond. I would love to make Firefighters Pub my regular Friday lunch place, as the food is quite good for the price and it’s close to the office, but the repugnant service and attitude that comes with it is just too much. I have no plans to go back.

Used to go here all the time when I lived near by. As someone who used to work in the industry, it’s rare to see this calibre of food in a pub setting and at this price. Waitresses are a little older and set in their ways but that’s part of the charm. Was actually my first date with my girlfriend, almost three years ago. Had the chowder.

It’s Tuesday night, the place is dead… how is it possible I’ve only seen the server twice in 3.5 hours? I’ve had to go to the bar every single time I’ve wanted a drink. What’s the point in having table service?

Loved this place. When we got there, we were debating whether it was worth the cover. My group was all late twenties. We were definitely the youngest people there, but we didn’t feel out of place at all. The crowd, atmosphere, music, and beer were awesome. We would go back for sure.

Try the five alarm burger… Wow lots of food! They add bacon, egg and a whole chorizo sausage to the burger for a very tasty combination. Really good fries. Great happy hour drink prices daily between 3:00 and 5:30PM. BEWARE the manager doesn’t seem to understand their own Unilocal check-in offer… It’s 20% off an entrée or 15% off the whole bill if you go Mondays between 2PM and 3PM.(wtf? Mondays between 2 and 3PM? Seriously?). The FinePrint doesn’t show up on your app until you actually check in and the manager seems to think it’s only a discount if you were are there Mondays between 2 and 3PM. After I complained he gave me 10% off the whole bill which was actually a larger amount than 20% off an entrée.

im writing this as I am still sitting here. being in the food and beverage industry myself, I have to say this place is run very well! manager is a hard worker and helps his staff out alot, hes professional and treats his people with respect. I get a good sense just watinv the staff work. it seems like they all really enjoy their job. food was decent not amazing. actually it was ecactly what I expected. the price is reasonable on the main menu, however I ordered off of some ‘Appy hour’ menu which was even cheaper. beer was $ 4 during any cfl game or happy hour time. and prices for decent single malt scotches. I think a dbl glenmorangie 12 year was $ 9-$ 10. theres a big stage, huge screen for games, pool tables, dart boards, and keno. lots of stuff to do. Great Place, ive been here a few times and have had good service and experience every time. I will continue to come back

I had a gas here tonight. Although I was not there for the food because I had dinner at a different restaurant, this Firefighters Public House began rocking tonight at 9:00ish. I had my standby Kokanee bottled beer, and actually got up and danced with my son’s girlfriend to the live band who were pretty good at covering Top 40 tunes. I especially liked Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy, although that doesn’t sound quite right coming from me. :-)

As far as bars at Metrotown go, this is probably it. Unless you want to go to a chain bar, this is probably one of the last real bars around now that the Station is closed due to construction. It’s interesting in that it’s themed after Firefighters and firefighting equipment. I was surprised to see this place surrounded by fire hydrants as I walked towards it. If you’re not familiar with the location, you wouldn’t be the first. It’s near the ground floor heading towards the Bay. There is no access(at least I don’t think there is) from the actual mall. As far as pub fare goes, this place is pretty decent. They have some interesting daily specials and a lot of large tables if you are coming with a large group.(In fact, if you’re playing sports with a team at Bonsor, this is probably the best place for your group to go afterwards.) The bar itself is interesting in that it is not like a traditional bar. It’s a counter bar, between the real bar where the servers grab drinks and food for the patrons. it kind of messes with my perception of a traditional bar where you can talk to the bartender and watch them work up close. But hey, the servers were friendly enough. If you’re at the mall and you want to head to a bar afterwards, this place is definitely worth checking out.

Blah. I don’t like to write a bad review, I’d like to give a place the benefit of the doubt, especially on a first visit. BUT. After a handful of good reviews from trusted friends, I made my first, and possibly last, visit to this public house. Grumbly tummies brought us here for lunch one recent Saturday. It was surprisingly empty considering how big this place is… maybe 2 or 3 tables in there at most. Should have been a clue. I started the afternoon off with a caesar — unfortunately for me, it was about the worst caesar I’d ever had… watery tasting, not spicy at all, and even lacked a basic garnish of celery or pickled green. I had to splash some tabasco into it from the next table over! There was a burger and beer special starting at $ 9.99 and up, depending on your choice of brew, so 3 of us ordered that. Burger was… well, ok. Nothing special, just a mediocre frozen patty cooked through, and a bun that reminded me of a fast food bun, but a little more dense. The fries were exactly the same fries that you can buy at the Costco food counter, I am certain… so, so salty and super greasy. My friend ordered the fish and chips, I guess they were fishy and chippy, and greasy, again just too much salt, grease… and my beer just wasn’t quite chilled enough. Oh, and the service. Poor girl seemed new, didn’t really know what was going on, didn’t know about the specials… she kept clearing drinks and plates we weren’t done with but… hey? Because of the burger specials, the bill wasn’t huge, so I don’t feel too bad — but they could offer some better food. The drink prices were reasonably average. My co-diners, who had all eaten there before were quite disappointed and told me over an over that it had always been better — so maybe it was just one bad day for the place. On a positive note, the ladies washroom was really quite clean, and I wouldn’t hesitate to pee there again.

The Metropolis area seems to have plenty of ghetto bars. These places are usually slightly beaten up(and some of the customers look a bit that too), but if you can overlook that you will find awesomeness. Beer is reasonable, the food is quite cheap, and you’ll have a rocking good time. The pub is located on a building attached to the Metropolis parking lot(you are allowed to park in there). Inside it was pretty dead, and there was only 1 waitress(!) running the entire place, so service was ridiculously slow. There are drink specials everyday. For today(Sunday), it was $ 4.25 Bud Light(bottles), and $ 4.75 Bud Light pints. The band was somewhat decent, pumping out tunes from bands such as the Tragically Hip and Smash Mouth. Personally I had the Peppercorn burger. It wasn’t bad, but it was honestly nothing special. What was nice though was that they let you substitute onion rings for fries without an extra charge. My friends had the 3-Alarm burger. I totally wish I had ordered this. It’s a burger with a hot dog smokie slapped on top. Yes, a hamburger patty and a weiner in a bun with a fried egg(in that order), packed into a hamburger bun. If this isn’t full of win, I don’t know what is. I’m sure my friends are also going to die a couple of days sooner. It’s not that easy to find half-decent ghetto-pubs, but this one is quite good. I will be back.
