small over salted portions & moody unfriendly wait staff. french only speaking, certainly not english friendly. and some say people in paris are unfriendly?

Whether you feel like having a light snack or a hearty dinner in Brussels, Arcadi Café can satisfy your cravings. My wife and I went there based on the recommendation of Rick Steves and we were delighted!
I’m not normally a person who eats quiche — not because of any lame stereotype, but because they are usually too heavy on the eggs and butter for my liking. Not so at Arcadi. We ate there twice, sampling several different savory tarts, all of which were made with a very light touch. I don’t quite know how they did it, but the tarts are full of flavor and full of their advertised ingredients, but seem to have very little in the way of eggs. Also, I’m fairly sensitive to the taste of butter, and I couldn’t detect any in the tarts that I ate — I suspect they use olive oil instead.
Highly recommended based on our experience are the smoked salmon and broccoli tart, and the mushroom, olive, sun-​dried tomato, and basil tart.
But the real showstopper is their famous framboise meringue (raspberry tart). This one obviously did have a lot of egg in it, the whipped whites making up the meringue, and the yolks making up a delicious smooth custard that formed the base. Surprisingly, both the meringue and the custard were both light on the sugar, making this a stark contrast to the usual sickly sweetness one has come to expect from this kind of desert. In this case, it was the fresh raspberries that provided the sweetness!
The first time we visited, we asked for the framboise meringue because it was specifically highlighted by many reviewers as being the pinnacle of their offerings. Alex, our waiter, informed us that they only ever make one per day and when it’s gone, it’s gone! He took pity on us, however, and suggested that if we were to come back the following day, he would ensure that two slices were set aside for us. We did return the following day and we did enjoy our reserved slices immensely!

Petite adresse réputée au bout (ou à l’entrée, tout dépend de comment on la prend) des Galeries Royales, l’Arcadi n’est pas un attrape-​touriste comme on en retrouve à la pelle une rue plus loin.
Proposant des plats du jour bons et copieux à prix TRÈS démocratiques (8 € 50 le poulet entier sauce curry accompagné de riz, je dis oui!) dans un environnement pittoresque à la décoration kitsch et belge, ce restaurant est une réelle perle dans son genre!
La carte très variée et leur vitrine de gâteaux et tartes faits-​maison donne l’eau à la bouche.
Seul bémol? C’est très petit et on est vite les uns sur les autres… dans une ambiance bruyante qui rend néanmoins le lieu très convivial.
Arcadi, je dis oui!

J avais toujours eu de bons feedback mais plus d’une heure pour être servi à trois ce temps de midi. On a du partir pour né pas rater l avion sans jamais avoir vu nos plats. Par contre ils ont été extrêmement rapides pour nous faire payer les 3 bières commandées. Dernière fois.

J’avais l’habitude d’y aller régulièrement. En effet, les tartes sont vraiment bonnes.
Mais quelle a été ma surprise la dernière fois que je m’y suis rendu. On était deux:
Une tarte, un panini, deux boissons, une tarte dessert à partager. 28 €.
En effet les prix ont bien augmenté… 9.5 € la part de tarte.
Alors oui elle sont bonnes, mais mettre une salade de supermarché pas fraîche avec une vinaigrette écoeurante… ça né vaut pas ce prix la.
Je pense qu’ils ont décidé de se faire du beurre sur les touristes et né plus vouloir recevoir des bruxellois.

Le cadre est sympa bien bruxellois et Royal. L’assiette: je recommande l’encornet (calamar) à la plancha (top), le vol au vent avec ses quenelles et les boulettes sauce tomate.

Cela fait des années que j’y vais et cela né change pas.
Le cadre Belgique nostalgique avec ses tables de bistrot serrées, les boites de biscuits à l’effigie de la famille royale ou les billets agrafés sur les murs en vaut déjà le détour. Leur terrasse dans la galerie du Roi est parfaite pour se poser un peu protégé des intempéries dans cette magnifique architecture du 19ième siècle.
Côté nourriture, leur point fort est leur cuisine méditeranéenne, c’est-à-dire, leurs pâtes aux fruits de mer, leur saumon et calamars à la plancha, leurs pâtes maison etc. Et si vous avez encore une petite faim, n’hésitez pas à choisir dans la vitrine votre morceau de patisserie: plaisirs gourmands garantis.
L’Arcadi est connu pour ses tartes salées. Je déconseille car la pâte réchauffée n’est pas du meilleur effet. Tout comme le rissotto avec trop de crème fraîche n’est pas ragoutant du tout. Par contre n’hésitez pas à choisir les tomates crevette (en saison), ou les boulettes frites, tout à fait honnètes pour le prix démocratique.
Enfin, le service est très professionnel et rapide.
A faire avec des amis pour découvrir Bruxelles ou juste pour soi.

Outré leurs délicieuses tartes disponibles chaque jour, le couscous du jeudi vaut le détour. Et mention toute spéciale pour leur risotto aux scampis et gingembre et leurs calamars à la plancha.

I love this place, the hustle and bustle… the great quiches and tarts (have both) and the mix if Moroccan Italian and french bistro dishes. It all good food for a good price .no frills just straight forward simple food with good taste. It’s a hidden gem just outside the tourist streets but my is it worth it :)

Petit snack sympa pour luncher. Leur spécialité: les tartes salées. J’ai goûté la tarte carotte-​cumin qui était franchement bonne (bien cuite et avec beaucoup de saveurs), servie avec une petite salade. Prix, tout à fait abordable (moins de 10 €), malgré qu’on soit dans le centre de Bruxelles.
Chouette localisation, à la sortie de la galerie de la Reine, mais dommage pour le bruit (bus, voitures, métro, vélos, passants) quand on est en terrasse.
Le soir, la cuisine est ouverte particulièrement tard (on a été servis vers 22h30−23h00) et la carte est particulièrement fournie.

Great service and great food. We came in for a coffee and beer but ended up ordering a carbonara pasta. This was by far the best carbonara I had in a while, perfect al dente pasta, great creamy sauce. Good location and altough the place was packed the service was quick and without issues. Very close to the old town market and comics museum. Free WiFi.

La mission impossible du jour: trouver un endroit pour 12 personnes (dont certaines veulent manger, d’autres juste boire un verre) un jour de semaine assez tard. Et spécifiquement dans le quartier de la gare centrale, en plus.
En fait, super facile. Je n’avais jamais remarqué le Arcadi Café, mais c’était finalement exactement ce qu’il nous fallait.
Service hyper sympa et efficace qui n’a jamais perdu le sourire face à la taille du groupe, l’heure ou la diversité des commandes. Et cerise sur le gâteau, la part de quiche forestière que j’ai commandée était à tomber!

Arcadi es una cita obligada en Bruselas, aquí se sirven las mejores quiches del mundo. Este lugar tiene horario extendido desde las siete de la mañana y hasta las 11 de la noche, lo que lo convierte en el lugar ideal para desayunar antes de salir en los clásicos day-​trips de Bruselas o cenar algo rápido antes de ir a descansar. El precio es bueno y el servicio es amable.

Awesome place! the price-​quality ratio is excellent (Belgian cuisine and lovely pies/​cakes) and waiters are very helpful (upstairs part /​group reservation).arcadi café is however located in a very touristy place .do not go there if you expect a very calm place where to enjoy a coffee with a piece of cake!

Cette brasserie au style parisien est toujours une adresse de fin de soirée quand on n’a pas eu le temps de manger avant une activité au centre-​ville. Proche des spots événementiels (Bozar, Grand’Place, place Royale), on la trouve très facilement. Ils servent tard et sont très rapides. On y goûte la cuisine belge mais aussi italienne. Ils sont connus aussi pour leur choix très large en pâtisserie. La proximité des tables cependant, nous oblige à davantage de discrétion dans nos conversations.

Loved the food so much that I ate here twice during my brief stay. The waitstaff was friendly, the atmosphere was cozy (and intimate — expect to sit close to other diners). The dinner pies were hot and delicious, served with small side salads, and an ideal portion size — enough to fill me up without a bunch of leftovers. So nice to find vegetarian options at a place with plenty on the menu for meat-​eating friends.

NEVER GO HERE. This is the worst restaurant I have ever been to in terms of food and service. Only gave them one star because it would not let me put 0 stars… We were sworn at, yelled at, and treated worse than we had ever been treated in our lives in a restaurant. It was shocking, I do not know how this place stays in business. After being treated like this, we tried to leave and the servers, or more like thugs, tried to make us pay extra for things we did not order. I was about to call the police. Unbelievable.
Do yourself a favor and go to the restaurant we were going to go to… which ended up being much nicer, and the owner was amazing, he even gave us free drinks while we waited for a seat. The restaurant is called Thai Place in the center.

J’étais fan d’Arcadi Café! Une adresse incontournable de Bruxelles mais ici dernièrement, j’ai poussé les portes de l’établissement pour la 1000ème fois et j’ai jamais eu de mauvaise surprise mais cette fois-​ci, ce qui devait arriver, arriva finalement! Je commande une lasagne comme d’habitude et elle était chauffée au micro-​onde! On me l’apporte toute bouillante et quand j’arrive au centre de la lasagne c’était hyper-​froid! Etant avec mes collègues, j’ai évité de faire un scandale puisque l’on m’avait inviter! Une situation délicate de plus c’était l’anniversaire d’une des collègues. J’ai retiré 3 étoiles, j’ai été dur mais recevoir un plat réchauffé sortant du micro-​onde non merci pour un tel établissement de haute renommé…

Mitigé !! L’endroit est parfaitement situé entre la galerie du roi (ou de la reine, j’hésite toujours…) La décoration se rapproche du bric a brac que je peux trouver dans le grenier de mon père, vieux tableau, billets de banques venant du monde entier, pancartes trouvés je né sais où. Bref j’adhère parfaitement à la déco, je me sens chez moi! Le seul hic étant la proximité des tables, intimité né rime pas avec ce lieu…
Rien à dire sur la nourriture, un morceau de quiche pour chacune des deux demoiselles qui m’accompagne (Elles en sont ravies) et un très bon bolognaise pour moi. Que demander de mieux que des femmes et un bolo pour un dimanche midi?
La ou ça devient la catastrophe, le service. Des serveurs qui galopent partout et se trompent de table pour les commandes, le chef de salle qui a le sourire de mon patron un lundi matin et un vieux monsieur un peu perdu qui parque les gens qui attendent une table le long du bar. Je me demande toujours si ce viel homme faisait partie des garçons de salle! Un point positif est que, malgré le monde et les erreurs de commande, le service a été rapide!
Niveau des prix c’est correcte, addition séparée possible quand il n’y a pas trop de monde (Ce qui est rarement le cas…)
Bref, à réessayer quand il n’y a pas trop de monde!

The only reason I gave this place one star is because 0 stars isn’t an option. We went to this restaurant and sat down upstairs, where our server was loudly mumbling and cursing in French about how many people he had to attend to. Reluctantly, my friends and I ordered food. Less than 5 minutes later we knew we had made a mistake because our server’s attitude was so terrible and the ambiance was bad.
We didn’t want our only night in Bruxelles to be plagued with a bad meal and a bad night, so we went downstairs and politely asked our server to cancel our orders. He and 3 other servers made a HUGE scene in front of a packed restaurant, and made us pay for a meal we never received and had only ordered less than 5 minutes before.
I have never been treated like this by anyone in my life, and they ended up cursing at my friends and I. This place is absolutely terrible, just skip it.

The best nicoise salad I’ve ever had! Service is slow but its like that all across europe i feel like. Breakfast pies are good and the desserts are to die for. Bread is very good too! Highly recommend, however, on the expensive side cuz its located inside a galleria

Un très bon thé à la menthe accompagné par la tarte au citron meringue la plus succulente de Bruxelles (pour de vrai !). Juste à la sortie des galeries de la reine (qui valent le détour également). Une adresse à garder sous la main et à recommander bien fort !

La superbe façade de l’Arcadi Café se dresse dans cette petite rue en pente au bout de la galerie de la reine. C’est une population très cosmopolite qui s’y affaire autour de ses petites table style ‘brasserie française’, ou sur leur chouette terrasse les jours de beau temps.
Intérieur un peu (trop?) chargé, mais ça a évidemment son charme. Personnel très «pro»: sympa mais surtout efficace. On y va surtout le midi ou l’après-midi pour leurs quiches simplement incroyables, accompagnée d’une bonne bière (la Bön Secours blonde y est servie à la bouteille). Le menu du jour également a été testé plusieurs fois et n’a jamais déçu.
Le grand mérite de cet établissement réside dans sa capacité à garder son authenticité, dans un quartier qui poussé de nombreux autres à se concentrer plutôt sur les touristes perdus et peu aventureux…
C’est rapide, c’est bon, pas cher et on s’y sent bien. Vous devez absolument y passer quand vous êtes dans le coin.

C’est agité et un peu brouillon point de vue service mais à quoi s’attendre d’autre en bordure des Galeries Royales Saint-​Hubert où fourmillent en nombre touristes et locaux en quête d’authenticité? Fréquentez le plutôt en heures creuses pour une part de tarte géante dans un cadre théâtral où vieilles cartes postales, billets de monnaie obsolètes et boîtes métalliques façon grand-​mère en exode autour du monde rencontrent babillages multilingues et brèves discussions de voyage entre deux étapes pittoresques.
Le café est un peu cher (pas vraiment plus que la moyenne des bars avoisinants) mais le vrai dilemme résiderait plutôt dans l’assiette: sucrée ou salée? Un choix de dandy du dimanche à l’orée d’un des joyaux historiques du Centre.

I like this place and have been here several times but was there a couple days ago on a Friday afternoon. It wasn’t busy and although the weather was nice, we sat inside (all outdoor tables taken). I just ordered a sandwich and my lady some kind of eggplant thingy. A sandwich is a sandwich, so no rave reviews there. She enjoyed hers though which was something like mille-​f… Not sure of the name.
The beers (Waterloo) came quickly enough but a half hour after ordering we were still waiting for our food. I have been served a lot faster when the places was packed. The waiters seemed clueless as to who ordered what at which table. First they tried to give us some prawn dishes which we didn’t order. After complaining about the service, it was obvious that the waiter completely forgot about it since people who arrived later than we did were already eating. When I paid and the lady asked how everything was, after I told her the service was crap, she said that they had just gotten a new system where the food is ordered and its put on some type of credit card looking piece of plastic and put on the table of the customers. They were getting used to the new system. NOT MY PROBLEM!
I do like it here but hate to see such customer service, or lack of it.

This place is a little off the beaten path. It feels a little more like a local place which may explain why we felt a bit out of place. The staff did not make us feel any more comfortable either. Just kinda dismissive. Because of that, I wouldn’t go back.
The food was ok– tartes with salad. It was a good lunch and they have a decent selection for vegetarian travelers. It is, however, unfriendly to any other language besides French.

Né vous attendez pas à trouver de la Grande cuisine à l’Arcadi. En revanche, attendez vous à avoir l embarras du choix avec une carte PLE-​THO-​RIQUE. Des pattes, des quiches, des tartes sucrées salées, des lasagnes, en veux tu, en voilà !
A chaque fois que j’y ai mis un pied, c’était rempli. L’Arcadi est une vraie ruche où se mêlent locaux et touristes, serrés autour de mini tables rondelettes. Le cadre est chouette, même si un peu (beaucoup ?) bordélique. Il est coutume de poireauter avant de passer commande, mais ce n’est pas non plus scandaleux.
Conclusion: privilégier l’Arcadi quand vous avez une petite fin et pas grand chose dans le porte monnaie. C’est le pit stop idéal lorsqu’on fait visiter le centre. Et, croyez moi, ça plait beaucoup !
Un conseil aussi si vous voulez avez envie d’une tarte sucrée en dessert ou en gouter: allez d’abord les regarder dans la vitrine avant de commander. Ça vaut notamment pour la tarte tatin qui, si elle est là depuis la veille, né ressemble plus à grand chose.

Des parts de tartes au chocolat blanc et abricots, tatin aux pommes, et tout ce qu’on peut imaginer comme tartes sucrées…mmmmmh, un régal !
Mieux vaut avoir manger léger le midi et y aller pour un goûter vers 17h, sans avoir prévu de gros repas pour le soir, ça cale vraiment.
Pour le salé, j’a moins testé, mais j’y ai déjà dégusté de bonnes parts de quiches et autres tartes salées, etc… et il y a vraiment un très grand choix sur la carte ! volailles, carbonnades, tartare, lasagnes et pâtes diverses, salades, etc, etc…
Au niveau du service, rien à dire, même s’il y a souvent du monde, dû à sa situation «touristique» à l’une des extrémités des Galeries Royales Saint-​Hubert, ils s’arrangent toujours pour vous trouver vite de la place, et le service est plus rapide que ce à quoi on s’attend, par rapport à la fréquentation du lieu.
Les tarifs sont tout à fait raisonnables. Ce n’est pas de la cuisine gastronomique, mais c’est simple, et surtout bon !!!

L’Arcadi, c’est un classique du coin. En bordure des galeries de la Reine, ça grouille d’activité. On y va pour luncher avec un ami et passer du bon temps dans un cadre qui est loin d’être aseptisé. On peut y manger de tout, la carte est grande.
La déco est vraiment sympa, pour le reste, je dirais correct. A midi, c’est le coup de feu, donc né soyez pas surpris de poireauter 10 minutes à côté de la caisse pour payer. Ca court dans tous les sens, parfois un peu trop agité mais c’est ce qui fait son charme aussi.
Une bonne adresse de lunch pour moi.

My favorite place to eat while in Brussels. Great selection of beers including a «Beer of the Month» and nice menu with local and international meals as well as signature «tartes aux légumes» — quiche-​like vegetable pies.
The best thing in Arcadi Café is the dessert selection displayed by the counter. You can spend long minutes choosing the right one to finish your meal with. But the little voice in your head will make you return again and again to try all of them. But whichever you choose, you will not make a mistake.
As said before, the downside of the place is the service, though the waiters have never been mean to me, they are just really busy. I would recommend Arcadi Café for a small meal during the day or the occasional dessert whilst browsing the city.

Sweet café near the heart of Brussels — the kind of place where you see locals, but is welcoming enough to let visitors join the warm family vibe. The café can get pretty busy, but we had no problem squeezing our way into a seat.
The dinner options were great, and the coffee met expectations, but the dessert really made me fall in love. Cakes, pies, meringues, waffles… everything home-​made and far exceeding what we found at city centre. I think I died and went to sugar heaven.
If you’re visiting, it’s helpful to know the language (the server we had spoke little English, so we really needed to use our French). Also, hang on to your euros — there’s a limit to credit cards.

Two words… Raspberry Meringue! OMG the best pie you will ever have in Brussels, this pie is legit… if I could get this packed and shipped to the USA I would order a dozen pies right now. This pie was so good I came here 5 times, once a day during my time in Brussels… the raspberry meringue pie had me hooked. The fluffy meringue complements the fresh raspberries with a slightly tart filling. The light vanilla bean custard-​like pudding is a nice complement to the raspberry, and it all sits on top of an amazing crispy tart shell. This is no joke, one of the best pies I have ever eaten!
So I came here so many times I pretty much sampled a lot of their menu, and they do have a lengthy menu. The steamed mussels are an excellent choice as a starter or meal. The quiche’s are absolutely delicious and one of their specialties. I would skip the pasta, steak, and chicken entrees, they just were not impressive and the meat was dry. You can get a quick and cheap breakfast here served with eggs, bread, coffee, and fresh OJ for around $ 5. They also serve a large variety of belgium beers! The upstairs seating is the cozy spot and not as cramped as the bottom. Its always busy here… the service is kind of slow because only two waiters service the whole restaurant.
Overall, this is the place for a quick bite if you really like desserts and quiches. That raspberry meringue is to die for!

Der Titel «vegetarisches Restaurant» ist sicher übertrieben. Aber es gibt tatsächlich einige vegetarische Gerichte. Auch sonst ganz nett.

Sans aucun doute une des mes adresses préférées dans le centre de Bruxelles. Une carte très variée et des prix abordables (qui ont quand même tendance à gonfler au fur et à mesure des année mais bon, crise oblige!).
Chouette terrasse à l’extérieur et déco interieure faite de pleins d’objets chinés des petites tables pour un petit diner romantique. Y’a pas beaucoup de places, un peu les uns sur les autres, mais c’est ça qui fait le charme de l’endroit.
Autre point positif, les heures d’ouvertures… Tous les jours de 7h à 23h! Quand les autres sont fermés, Arcadi est toujours ouvert! Parfait pour une petite bouffe rapide et sympa avant ou après un concert à l’AB (comme la si bien testé notre cher CM) une promenade dans le centre un dimanche ou un tea/​coffee time+ tarte.
Essayez les tartes, salées ou sucrèes et les crèpes.
Je n’ai jamais été déçue. Foncez!

Nuestra opción cercana, habitual y casi de confianza para desayunar estaba hoy hasta los topes, así que hemos buscado entre el aparthotel y la estación central y ha sido el primer sitio abierto que había. A primera vista tienen unas tartas de magnífico aspecto, pero no las hemos probado porque queríamos algo menos fuerte.
Al llegar y sentarnos nos han preguntado qué queríamos; como no nos han dado ni una carta (a otras mesas sí), hemos optado por el expreso, el zumo de naranja y un croissant, que suele ser combo ganador. Al poco nos trajeron un expreso muy correcto, un zumo de naranja de bote del tiempo con hielos, y un croissant que no estaba tan bueno ni de cerca como los de otros sitios de alrededor: menos crujiente y demasiado tostado, quemado en algunos sitios incluso.
Nuestra experiencia con el servicio no ha ido a mucho más, son asépticos completamente, así que hemos pagado y nos hemos ido. Es una pena que no sean más amistosos, porque tienen un local bastante bonito y WiFi.

We had a delicious vegetable meal and even my husband, who prefers meat, was enthusiastic. I can also recommend the cakes and the quiches. I haven’t tried each of the 20 different sorts, but I would have loved to. The atmosphere is as well to mention: precisely as you imagine a belgian-​french Bistro. You can have everything from breakfast, lunch and dinner. For the Café is located in a pedestrian zone it is ideal for children.

We had a waffle with whipped cream and a warm tarte au chocolat both were delicious, especially the cake. We also tried the hot chocolate a la maison, which was very good, too. The only downside was that the waiters only spoke French, which made placing our order quite the adventure. We did succeed, however, and were quite happy with what we got. The prices are ok for Brussels.

Deja a l’entrée tous les gateaux me font de l’oeil… malheuresement je n’ai pas pu les tester cette fois ci.
Les tartes sont tres bonne et pour 7.50… je pense on est tres bien servie.
Le service est normale mais rapide a midi.

La prochaine fois je reviens pour les desserts!

Entre la fête de l’iris et un concert à l’AB, il né nous restait que 20min pour trouver un endroit où manger au centre-​ville. Je dégaine mon appli Unilocal,et en 2 clicks je tombe sur Arcadi… ! «Les quiches sont délicieuses» voilà ce qu’on m’avait dit… et bien oui, les quiches sont vraiment délicieuses, et mon bolo était lui aussi proche de la perfection ! Croyez-​moi ou pas, mais notre diner a duré 20min montre en main… incroyable ! Bref, j’y retournerais bientôt, en mode plus relax histoire de vraiment bien profiter ! Bön, rapide, pas cher… c’était exactement ce qu’il nous fallait… et me service, impec’ ! Voyant qu’on était pressés, on a même eu droit à un «bon concert» à la fin… dans le mille ! Doué le mec ;)

Restaurant de charme avec brio. Bonne nourriture. 20 gâteaux. 20 Quiche.

Really nice and authentic café. The people next to use were speaking Vlaams, so you know they’re locals.
**My wife spotted a little world of tarts in the window, and loved what she ordered, a bacon-​and-​spinach number.
**Carbonnade was spot-​on.
**Chimay White on draft!!! ZOMG!
**Easy menu for kids to order, my picky-​ass 5-​year-​old got an «omelete nature», just a f’ing plain egg.
**Lemon-​meringue tart: money.
**Service was just as dick-​ish as I expected it to be, so no surprises.
**Total bill was under 50 Euros.

My experience in Arcadi can be summarized as follows:
— Rude and confrontational service
— Absolutely hopeless waiter (wrong orders, takes forever)
— Had to wait 30+ minutes to get a bill when the place is half-​empty.
After half an hour of asking the waiter several times for the bill (he was inside chatting to his mates) I walked inside and asked to pay by card. When I hand him back the receipt, the waiter actually confronted as to why I wasn’t leaving a tip (first time I’ve been asked for a tip in Brussels) I assume he was trying to take advantage, assuming I didn’t know that service is included by law in Belgium!
He then confronted further, saying I should be leaving a tip because we had «service a table». I still refused and explained how bad the service was. He muttered something in French or Arabic that I couldn’t decipher as I walked away.
Overall, not a very good impression and needless to say I’ll never go back. It’s a shame because the food is quite good.

We had lunch here on our last day in Brussels. We were searching for some place that would be good, as our previous meal was blah. So we found this: the Arcadi Café. When we arrived, it wasn’t that crowded yet, but a few minutes after we were seated, plenty of people came in, and we were glad we were already there. Most of the clientele were locals, which was a good sign.
I ordered the Vol au Vent, which was something I didn’t know. The waiter told me it was chicken, but after his explanation, I still didn’t know what it was, so I ordered it. It was a chicken stew that came in a puff pastry container, served with fries. It was well-​made, and the flavor was just right. I ordered a glass of Jupiler beer as well.
Things here are busy, and even though it’s right next to the Royal Gallery, tourists weren’t really swarming it either. I would go back here if I were in Brussels again.

Though one could complain that it’s too busy, too slow, too (insert pet peeve), etc., I never fail to visit this restaurant when visiting Brussels. Portions are generous, food is good, and their specialties are impeccable. During my last visit, and what makes most of the charm of the location is that the servers really don’t have much of an attitude and the fact that it’s always busy, crowded and a tad noisy makes one of the reasons I think people come here. Atmosphere does count. During my last visit there were Germans, French, and Belgians around me, young and old. Highly recommend going for lunch and asking and ordering «le menu du jour».

The cooking here is loaded with spices and very flavorful. What did we have? Crepes Salmon full of veggies with savory crêpe and a side salad. Excellent flavor and easily split in 2. The ½ poulet or chicken is nice but nothing special. Good for a kid as it has fries and is bland at least for here. It also comes with a side salad. The risotto scampi has shrimp, spinach and a nice texture and a ginger undertone that lingers. Our other salad, which we didn’t have a clue what we were ordering was tomatoes with a bitter lettuce (not bad bitter, flavorful) and tuna chunks and then a spicy vinaigrette dressing to help counter the lettuce. It was very good. Our final dish had the word grille in it and it turned out to be a steak grilled on the outside and rare inside, red and cold rare. That is how it comes. The grilling is loaded with natural flavor definitely nothing else added. It also had fries, herbed butter and side salad. Kids stopped eating so they can try the sweet tarts raspberry and lemon meringue. Given that we are on vacation I guess that is ok :). Fries are probably the only thing I didn’t really like. Our waiter spoke little English so we relied on our son’s 1 year of French. Menu is not in English. House white wine is dry.

Kurz und Bündig: Das Arcadi Café ist sehr zu empfehlen, sehr leckere Kuchen und Pasteten. Die Speisen der anderen Gäste sahen ebenfalls lecker aus. Das Preis Leistungsverhältnis ist gut.

Brüssel ist teuer. Wenn man sein Geld also schon schnell ausgeben muß, dann sollte wenigstens der Rahmen passen.
In der «Petite Restauration Arcadi Café» kann mand sicher sein, daß das Flair stimmt. Es erwartet einen das gemütliche Durcheinander an Dekoration (Bücher, Bonbonieren, Fotos), Tischen und abgenutzten Stühlen in einer Gastronomie mit langer Tradition.
Um einen herum kann man wirklich «Europa» erleben, denn es herrscht ein babylonisches Sprachengewirr von Deutsch, Französisch, Niederländisch, Spanisch, Englisch pur und als lingua franca und der Nachbar am übernächsten Tisch gestikuliert aufgeregt und spricht ???
Mit Händen und Füßen oder notfalls deuten am reichhaltigen Kuchenbuffet kommt auf jeden Fall eine Kommunikation zustande. Ich genoß eine «Tarte Citron Meringue» und eine «Tarte Tatin Chaude». Letztere ist mit «warmer Apfelkuchen» nur ganz unzureichend übersetzt — es ist ein Gedicht. Da nimmt man es auch hin, daß der Durchschnittspreis für ein (nicht kleines) Stück Kuchen bei 4 EUR liegt.
Sehr atmosphärisch und zu empfehlen, auch wenn es sich natürlich nicht um einen nur den Einheimischen bekannten «Geheimtipp» handelt.
