Tortillería y Antojitos Mexikanos

One time, when my friends were taking me out for my birthday, they told me that if on a weekend night a place is not teeming with people, it is probably not a good place to go to.
That said, this location may seem a little unexciting (very traditional Mexican restaurant décor as I understand, including the statue of Mary). But when I came here on a Friday night (late 8s) the place was teeming with people! Definitely a good sign.
I ordered a mojito and tacos (believe they were «Tacos de chuleta con queso»).
Mojito was my first, so I have no Mojitos to compare it to. I liked it though, it was a good balance of strong and sweet. I will admit, at first I was uncertain if the sugar on the bottom of the glass was part of the recipe, but it was.
Tacos were some of the best I have yet had. First I liked the way the ingredients came together in the tacos. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the rest was no less excellent. Like how they do not overdo it on the ingredients. They keep it simple, as an authentic taco should be.
There were limes provided, and the sauce on the tacos helped bring everything together without overwhelming the dish with its flavor.
I also liked that they provided some lettuce and pico de gallo on the side. While usually I like this in the tacos, it did not hurt at all to allow the customer to put in in their him or her self. As I understand it, while I like lettuce and tomato on my tacos, it is not part of traditional recipes to include them.
Really nice service! Spoke German, English, and I believe Spanish too!
From my experience at home in the States, locations like this: with this kind of food and this kind of general atmosphere are usually owned and operated as family businesses by families from México. The atmosphere and quality of food seems to fit the bill.

The only thing I gotta say is read my review from «Los Mexikas» at Lange Gasse. This place is the same but in my neighborhood here in the 2^nd district. The food is about as authentic as can be, since the people working and preparing the food are actually from México. Now, the flavor of the food might slightly vary from what you would taste in the American Southwest, Texas, or México itself, simply because of the local ingredients & spices used in preparation. But the guacamole is freshly prepared; it isn’t the nasty stuff that you find bottled on a Billa or Spar shelf that was made up in Sweden! Other than that, it’s pretty awesome.

Noch nie so gutes mexikanisches Essen in Wien gehabt. Gemütliches Lokal, sehr freundliche Kellner, wahnsinnig leckere Gerichte und große Portionen. Bin begeistert und komme auf jeden Fall wieder!

YUM! Their chips con queso with refried beans — the best! A really good and authentic Mexican spot out of Mexico and the States. Be warned, their chile is really spicy! The mole enchiladas are on point. Their caramel crepes are still dancing in my mouth!
I would recommend for you to call to make a reservation as their seats are very limited. I love their servers — very patient and friendly!

Very delicious food. Finally a Mexican restaurant I will visit over and over again. Good atmosphere, friendly chef and waiters and tasty food. I absolutely recommend it.

excellent food! My wife and i traveled here from San Diego (on the boarder of Mexico and the US), and were craving some mexican food. While you can’t get a burrito here, you can get some amazing enchiladas! (spicy!)

I didn’t like it at all. Don’t come here. The waiters are rude. The food is cold. I’m Mexican and I dissaprove completely.

Das Lokal liegt etwas versteckt und ist auch nicht sehr groß. Man sollte auf jeden Fall reservieren.
Und es zahlt sich aus: das Essen ist ein Traum. Es schmeckt sehr authentisch und man fühlt sich wie in Mexiko!

The best Mexican food this side of Texas!!!

mein erstes Mal mexikanisches Essen. War anfangs super begeistert, als ich rein gegangen bin. Also Atmosphäre obwohl es eher klein ist toll.
Was mich störte es war nicht so lecker wie erwartet. Wer eine größere Bierauswahl haben will ist er hier perfekt. Ich finde es schade, ich hatte mir besseres vorgestellt, weil alles andere hervorragend ist.
Mit Sicherheit komme ich nochmal und gebe eine zweite Chance. Vielleicht ist es dann besser.

The atmosphere and décor we’re really awesome and authentic for the cuisine. The waiter was really nice and we tried some new beers based on his suggestion.
I had a beef taco dish which was very tasty but the beef was chewy so only 4 stars plus is was a bit overpriced in my opinion. Would go again!

I was highly dubious of getting Mexican food in Vienna, but I am so glad we took a gamble on this place. It is truly delicious and JUST what we needed after our strictly meat and potatoes/​gravy/​beer diet while traveling around Prague and Vienna.
We were spending the night in and strolled down the road in our PJs to try to get takeaway. The manager/​owner seemed slightly confused by our request to place an order in the store, then wait the 10 – 15 minutes to take it home, but went with it, even offering us a seat at the one open table in the small space.
We had nachos, tacos and enchiladas and they were just so, so good. I worried that after living in the UK for 3 years my gauge for such things was off. But my sister, who still lives in AZ where the fantastic Mexi is plentiful, confirmed it was totally amazing.

Fantastic! For Vienna that is. Great feel, reasonable prices and an open kitchen where I can hear the sizzle of meat while drinking my Mojito and wondering if I should bring a sombrero the next time. Taste was up with the likes in southern California (Mexican population exceeding that of non-​Mexican people) where I lived quesidilla to quesidilla. I had an enchilada with tomato Chili sauce that was real nice. I think I will need to try much more for a better review, but so far A-​! Décor was fun and full of character as if I just hopped over the boarder, bending time and space, to appear in Mexico. Mojito was on the pricey side, but unlike Mas! I felt the alcohol, and it felt me… I just can’t believe it took 2.5 years living in the area to try it! Oh and the place was really busy for a Monday night. Come expecting people!

As a few people recommended this restaurant we were quite anxious to try it. So, we tried the mojitos and enchiladas. Both were quite good. The chili-​tomato sauce was really good. I like a kick in my food, but cannot handle too much spice. This one was just right.
I’m happy to have found this delicious restaurant, since I live nearby.

Though the food here is good — I had to revise my previous post based on my recent experience at this restaurant. I came with a larger group and though I had made a reservation two weeks in advance, they were unable to provide us with proper seating. We had to all squish together to barely even fit at the table provided. There was little effort to find a solution to the problem and the service overall was quite poor and very slow. We waited over 1.5 hours for our food and had to constantly fight for the waiters attention, with repeated reminders on orders that had been forgotten.
I can longer recommend this place.

Wir waren eine Geburtstagsrunde von 15 Leuten und hatten Platz für 10 Gäste. Wir haben 2 Wochen im Voraus reserviert. Als wir sehr freundlich darauf hin wiesen, dass wir nicht genügend Platz für die Geburtstagsrunde sei, wurde nur sehr zögerlich bzw gar nicht drauf reagiert. Im Endeffekt konnten wir dank sehr freundlichen Sitznachbarn einen weiteren Tisch ergattern. Der weitere Abend verlief ehr durchwachsen, da das Personal äußerst überfordert und dadurch sehr unfreundlich rüber kam. Deswegen nur ein Stern, und der geht auch nur ans Pacfico Bier.
Das Essen hat auch sehr lang gedauert.
Die Nachos Dips waren gut, nicht würzig genug. Nachos Chips haben teilweise alt geschmeckt.
All around, i wont come again.

Grabbed some take away on a busy Saturday night as not on available table (reservations recommended). I can’t compliment this authentic Mexican restaurant enough. Authentic, tasty ingredients, Perfect portions and well-​priced foods… Even vegetarian options.

Excellent Mexican food in Vienna??? No way is what I said as we traversed the subway and a couple blocks of downtown sidewalks. This is a jewel near the center of town as far as the food goes. I left wanting more but was discouraged from attempting to order another plate. The service was not great and the place is so small that people were waiting outside for a table on a unseasonably cold day. If i return to Vienna, I plan to stay downtown and make a visit to probably the best Mexican restaurant outside of Texas I have ever eaten at.

Super Mexikaner, uriges Mexikanisches Ambiente. Außergewöhnliche Speisekarte die sich deutlich von den üblichen Tex-​Mex Buden abhebt. Küche wie in Mexiko. Top!!!

Ich mache es kurz: volle 5 Sterne für grandios gutes und echtes mexikanisches Essen zu fairen Preisen! Sehr netter Service!
Ich hatte Huarache Mexicas: gegrillter Mais-​Teig mit Gemüse und Kaktustrieben samt Schafkäse, alles mit leichter, scharfer Sauce. Ein Geschmackserlebnis, dazu erfrischendes Reisgetränk. Auch die Cocktails sind sehr gut, und neurdings kann man hier auch mexikanisch frühstücken, werd ich sehr bald ausprobieren.

Being a liberal American with a healthy dose of guilt from doing most of my traveling abroad during the Bush years, one of the few things I felt justified in poo-​poo-​ing about Europe was its lack of good Mexican food. This place has removed that sense of justification.
The food doesn’t come with heaps of rice and beans or unlimited chips and salsa like you get in the States, but I challenge you to find a better Mole Enchilada in Manhattan for the same price. My one gripe was the margarita was a bit watered down.
Unilocal says they take reservations. When I read that, I was like «pfffff yeah ok.» But I’m lucky I went by myself. I went at 9PM on a Wednesday and there were people showing up who couldn’t get a table. The Viennese seem to love their Mexican, and they have good reason to with this place.

Wirklich zu empfehlen! Köstliche, authentische Gerichte in hervorragender Qualität und sehr angenehmes Ambiente. Die Bedienung ist aus Mexiko und sehr freundlich und bemüht. Auch original mexikanisch Biere sind hier erhältlich. Mir hat es sehr gut geschmeckt und ich habe mich sehr wohl gefühlt.

Food is great. And since I lived in California for a very long time I can say that I know Mexican food! Service is good — once you get ‘in’.
The only reason I’m not giving it a full five stars is because when I tried to go there for a second time it was impossible to get a hold of them to make a reservation. There is no way to reserve online and when I called it was either busy or no-​one picked up. And once they even hung up on me! Come on, I’m trying to give you business! After calling 16 (!) times, I gave up.

Yo tengo Taqueria los Mexikas! I finally have a replacement for my favorite mexican food in Vienna! I was devastated to hear Tacos Lopez closed, but am soooooooooo excited that a fellow Unilocaler tipped me off to this place!
The food is yummy, service is friendly, spanish spoken in the kitchen and all things seem authentic! I can highly recommend the nachos con queso or nachos totopos for an appetizer. The tortilla chips are homemade and the bean sauce, guacamole and salsa sauces are perfect accompaniments. For an entrée I chose the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce and it was great. I could do without the iceberg lettuce as a topping, but the mole sauce was deliciously rich.
The meal was filling, especially with an appetizer, but I couldn’t resist trying the house specialty dessert: Pastel de elote (corn bread cake with whipped cream and chocolate sauce) Olé! This was worth the wait for a late reservation (they are so small and so busy)!

The bulk of the reviews here were written only for the original location which is still open on Lange Gasse 12 1080 Wien– Tacqueria Los Mexikas. The new location is Leopoldgasse 1020 — Antojitos Mexikanos.

Growing up in Texas and visiting part of my family in Mexico; I can tell you I know my Mexican food and I miss it very much. Today I tasted some of the best Mexican food Vienna has to offer. Being my first visit I had to go with the Enchilada’s Verde, which means it’s going to be spicy and it better have some green chili. The cook delivered! Made with chicken, guacamole, green chili and real tortillas de maiz I thought I was in heaven. The decorations were a bit on the overkill, but the music was great. Hearing the waiters and owner speak Spanish and joke around were a plus! I will have to go back and try out the other plates and see if they place can keep its 5* rating.
The Texan lives again!

Definitely a Mexican restuarant as opposed to Tex-​Mex. The food here was very tasty.
To be honest I am not sure what I ordered, but it was a delicious mix of chicken and cheese, seasoned with a nice flavour and wrapped in a flour tortilla. It came with a side salad.
Portions were on the small side though, perhaps it was going for the tapas angle and we never copped? We would go back if back in Vienna, but would order more food. As it turned out the small dishes were the perfect size that evening and we didn’t need to order more.
Their Caipirinha cocktail was a bit on the sweet side.

Meiner Meinung nach der beste Mexikaner in Wien!
Hier wird keine «tex mex» Küche geboten, sondern authentische mexikanische Küche. Für mich war der Besuch in dem kleinen Lokal wie eine Reise nach Mexiko ;) Das Essen hat wirklich ausgezeichnet geschmeckt, die Restaurantbesitzer sind freundlich und zuvorkommen und als ich dort war, gab es auch einen Musiker, der auf der Gitarre Volkslieder gespielt hat. und somit zu einem authentischen Flair beigetragen hat!
Daher alles in allem von mir volle 5 Sterne :)

Wir haben am Abend davor verzweifelt versucht einen Tisch für den nächsten Tag zu reservieren (laut Homepage hatten sie offen) und sind leider stundenlang nur zu einem Band weitergeleitet worden, auf dem irgendetwas Spanisches geplaudert wurde und man auch keine Nachricht hinterlassen konnte. Auf gut Glück haben wir am nächsten Abend dann aber doch einen Platz bekommen, da wir recht früh da waren — später wäre alles reserviert gewesen. ich frage mich nur, wie die Leute reserviert haben. Der Tisch war nicht der tollste (direkt hinter meiner Begleitung war die Tür zum Klo), aber dennoch haben wir uns recht wohl gefühlt. Die Einrichtung ist sehr bunt und liebevoll gestaltet, das Lokal selbst ziemlich klein, aber gerade dadurch sehr gemütlich, und die Bedienung nett. Das Essen selbst war sehr gut, allerdings haben wir uns gewundert, wie wahnsinnig schnell wir es am Tisch hatten. Die Vorspeise war innerhalb kürzester Zeit da und die Hauptspeise kam schon, als wir mit der Vorspeise noch nicht mal ansatzweise fertig waren. Durch unseren Sitzplatz und die Schnelligkeit der Zubereitung wurde unser Besuch irgendwie ein wenig eigenartig, aber ich gebe dem Lokal gerne noch mal eine Chance, da es wirklich geschmeckt hat.

Die Portionen könnten einen Tick größer sein aber es war superlecker und supernett!

Eher zufällig nach einer Ausstellung in der nahe gelegenen Galerie entdeckt– aber ein ABSOLUTER Tipp!!!
Das Lokal ist ein Nichtraucher Restaurant– draußen steht aber liebevoll ein kleiner Glastisch mit einem Aschenbecher für alle, die es doch nicht lassen können.
Die Räumlichkeiten sind wirklich liebevoll und dem mexikanischen Thema entsprechend eingerichtet.
Zum Essen: ich habe dort die besten Nachos meines Lebens gegessen-​ungelogen– für 5,80 euro bekommt man dort eine richtig gute Portion!!! Ich muss sagen, alles was ich dort aß, kann ich mit «kulinarisches Paradies» wieder geben.
Das Personal kann fröhlicher, freundlicher und höflicher nicht sein! Absolute Gastfreundschaft und gute Laune! Obwohl wir schon recht spät und kurz vor Ende hinkamen, waren sie weder genervt noch böse, sondern machten uns gerne noch etwas zu Essen– und beteuerten immer wieder, dass es ihnen nichts ausmachte! Wirklich wahnsinnig nettes Service!
Zu erwähnen ist auch noch, dass der Mojito– der BESTE war, den ich bis jetzt getrunken habe. Leider hier nur 5 Sterne– weil es keinen 6 gibt =(
ABSOLUT weiter zu empfehlen!

Das Lokal ist recht klein — familiär trifft es wohl am besten. Auch ansonsten ist das Restaurant recht einfach eingerichtet, zumindest im hinteren Teil sitzt man auf Plastikstühlen.
Die Atmosphäre ist eher laut, was nicht zuletzt auf die recht laute mexikanische Musik zurückzuführen ist.
Unsere Bedienung kam uns insgesamt ein wenig unbeholfen vor — aber: das Essen war wirklich klasse! Wir hatten beide Alambres, einmal de res, einmal mixtas. Das Essen war sehr sehr gut, große Portionen (okay, ich hätte es schärfer vertragen g). Laut Internet gibt es auch Fajitas (die Webseite ist übrigens irgendwie ähnlich unbeholfen wie die Leute dort), die sind das nächste Mal dran ;-)
In diesem Sinne kann ich einen Besuch nur wärmsten empfehlen — und unter Umständen reservieren, wir haben quasi den letzten Platz bekommen.

ausgezeichnete authentische mexikanische kueche in lustiger atmosphaere: gute musik, exzellente stimmung, freundliche bedienung und leistbare preise. ein bisschen klein aber nur weil das restaurant jeden abend voll ist! eine reservierung ist empfohlen, ausser man kommt gleich wenn das restaurant aufmacht. tolle tacos al pastor jeden freitag abend, enchiladas (besonders con salsa verde oder mole), tacos dorados, viele gute tequilas, horchata und tamarindo getraenke, und viel mehr. sonntags gibts brunch mit live mariachi musik. los mexikas ist ein lieblingsrestaurant in wien geworden und meiner meinung nach das beste mexikanische essen in wien.
