Food not bad, but portions are huge. Wish I’d known that — would have shared a main with the hubby. Not a huge menu, so options are limited to about 6 mains. I’m not a beer connoisseur, but my other half fancies himself as a bit of a beer aficionado. He wasn’t a fan of the pilsner(me either in my humble non beer aficionado opinion). Really bitter and much higher alcohol % than is usual for this style of beer. Not a bad place to stop for a drink if you’re passing through… but I think I’ll stick to wine next time.

Highly recommended. Well thought out menu, balanced flavours and a good selection of craft beer. Rather than sit outside on the street, try and grab a table inside and enjoy the heritage ambience.

Literally the best food I have ever had. Service was very attentive and my steak was cooked to perfection! The only thing I would ask of for the atmosphere to be a little different. Please Please Please dim the lights a little and play some music. We felt like we had to whisper like we were in a library

Wine glass and beer-tasting paddle in hand we hit the Yarra Valley’s cellar doors and breweries. But being sensible(and greedy) we thought it best to line our stomachs along the way and check out the region’s pub food, pizzerias and fine dining(ok, we only really did one fine dining place, but in our defence we had to save our pennies for all those bottles of plonk). Plus the posh places get all the press, so it’s time to champion the rest. First stop: Hargreaves Hill Brewing Company at 25 Bell Street, Yarra Glen. Home to six craft beers this boutique brewery and restaurant is sitting pretty in an old bank, meaning high ceilings, restored fireplaces and ye olde fittings and fixtures. With a more modern exposed brick section at the back and outside eating area, too. Anyway, the food… We started off with a great salt and pepper-style calamari with lovely crunchy chives and spring onions on top and creamy garlic aioli, followed by(entrée-size) beetroot risotto with goats’ cheese. Vibrantly coloured it looked great on the plate — earthy, sweet and salty all at the same time. Only complaint, the cheese was so chilled it lost some flavour and had trouble combining with the risotto. On the whole though, a really well thought-out flavour combo. And then the heart-attack inducing steak sandwich — tender, well-cooked meat in toasted sourdough with fresh salad, great mayo and pickles on the side. Gourmet pub food at its very best.

In less than an hour out of the city you can be enjoying some of the finest things in the Yarra Valley including fine wines and incredible beers. Situated in Yarra Glen, in the Yarra Valley, you can’t miss the Hargreaves Hill Brewing Company. There is pretty much one street and surprise surprise it is on it(just a few doors down from the Yarra Valley Grand Hotel). Hargreaves Hill is a micro brewery that produces some of my favourite beers in Australia. Their ESB, Dubbel, IPA and pale ale are all sensational. The ESB in particular is a very hoppy summer ale with some huge passion fruit undertones. The place itself is family owned and quite small. It has the friendly service you would expect and they also have a restaurant that would be a hit with the Epicurean. If spending any time in the Yarra Valley, I would check out Hargreaves in Yarra Glen along with the other delights to be found in Healesville.
