Over the past 25 years we had been ordering the Topelz Special but tonight it is indelible. I don’t know from where they have started sourcing their olives but they have the the most revolting vinegary, preservative taste I have ever encountered. I normally love olives but these. .. ! What happened to the Kalamata olives? These piddling little black things are vomit material. There were only 2 anchovies on a family pizza and I requested more mushrooms instead of onions and got the meagerest amount of mushrooms which normally Topelz is renowned to be quite generous with. They are now very mean with their toppings, the ham is horrible and the whole thing ended up in the bin. I shall have to find a new pizza place as this is no longer the Topelz I/we knew. They have obviously changed hands and have ruined the Topelz trademark for great tasting pizzas. That’s the last Topelz pizza for us! Very disappointed. Yucky yuck yuck yuck!!!

Topelz pizzas are great and their family size ones are actually family size! We ordered a simple margarita with added onion and capsicum and it was one of the best pizzas I have had in a long time! I look forward to trying some of their other options next time I visit Melbourne!

Nothing was on Mulattas website or here or elsewhere about it being closed on a Monday so we settled for Topelz instead. Where as Mulatta next door is a more refined restaurant this is a more general purpose place. Its food was what it was for this sort of place and worked out fine, the Chicken Parma was one of the larger I have seen outside of Mrs Parma and came with an equally large salad, while my Pepperoni pizza was more than large enough and alright but not any different to Papalinos down the road(but of course this place has the advantage of indoor seating and a wider menu). Or The Old Pepper back up Chapel St would be better for a general purpose place imo. Didn’t have any of the problems some people have raised except getting waite staffs attention for extra water to deal with the especially spicy Peperoni pizza.

You’re drunk, it’s about 2am on a Thursday night, and there’s nothing open for miles. To your right, about 150m down, there’s a McDonalds. It’s full of alcohol-fueled bogans who want nothing but an easy target. You’re that easy target. To your left is petrol station, you can buy a packet of chips if you really think that’ll do it. Otherwise you can turn around, and there is Topelz. The thing I like about Topelz is that it knows what is; it’s the place everyone goes to when everything else is shut and the above options don’t really delight you. I personally hate McDonalds, so when I’m on the hunt for late night carbs I know that I can rely on Topelz to deliver a cheap, pretty tasty pizza at 3am. The staff are quite nice, even though you can kind of sense that desperation that only looms with late-night shifts. So next time you’re in a pickle, add cheese, tomato paste and whatever topping you like and you’re on your way to a good feed.
