The Restaurant is Closed. The Phone Number is Disconnected. There is a sign on the door which says that there will be a new Restaurant on the spot soon…

This place serves the kind of food that comforts and hugs you. As you bite into it, it whispers love all over it, and creates lasting addictions hard to describe to anyone who hasn’t experienced it yet. The combination lamb and chicken yiro is mainly what I’m referring to. I love that they roast their doner kebap horizontally, not vertically. To me, this makes sense, because the juices and fat of the meat will constantly baste itself as it rotates, whereas, in a vertical kebap, gravity will ultimately pull all that glory out and away from the meat. Be sure to ask them to throw in a couple of fries into the yiros, as this adds a nice starchy crunch.

I’ll preface this with I’ve been eating at this place for YEARS. I’ve had kebabs and then I’ve had YIROS… there is a MASSIVE difference. Each type of meat is tender, delicately spiced and delicious. They do takeaway, sit down and for those that are inclined they do a great tasting platter for two with the most beautiful hand cut chips. After one of their yiros you will be stuffed full. Log off, get in your car and just GO. You won’t regret it.

Best yiros in town. Don’t go anywhere else. The meat is cooked to perfection and the atmosphere is laid back with plenty to see as you sit there and watch the world go by. My favourite is always the large combo yiros for under $ 12. As a group, go for the platter for 2(which can actually feed 3 people). If you buy the«I love yiros shirt» you will get a discount everytime you go there(like I always do!)

I love the fact that it was a fast food restaurant; that also had a great menu. Ahhhh, so many choices. I had a chicken yiros with haloumi; excellent. And accidentally purchased myself lemon potatoes. So good.

A group of us came here no Saturday evening and it was packed. Fortunately, the staff worked with us and opened up two bar tables that could fit 16 of us. Yes, 16! They staff was efficient and cleaned the tables so we could sit and then gave us menus. The selection is basically kebabs, charcoal dinners, or salads. My friend and I shared the charcoal dinners which include your choice of meats(lamb, chicken, combination, octopus), greek salad, chips, pita bread and garlic yoghurt sauce. We decided that combo of lamb and chicken would be great. It was delicious and plenty of food for both of us. The pita is plain and nothing to ride home about but everything else was pretty tasty. My friends who ordered the calamari loved it very much and they were nice to share with us. Everyone was pretty satisfied except my friend who ordered the chicken salad. He said he would have preferred the calamari salad after having a taste. Quick service and better than most of the kebab stands around the area.

Growing up in Sydney, it was almost a ritual for our family to drive out to Marackville for a yeeros. They were famous for the best in Sydney, and you had the choice of the lamb off the gyros or a souvlaki inside your pita. We moved to the country, and I rarely got the opportunity to go there. And then I moved to Queensland, where all I could find was places selling doner kebabs. I mean sure, you’ll choke one down after a few drinks, but you’d not go out of your way for it. Then I discovered Char Char down at West End. Right next to Ouzeri’s, I actually thought it was an extension, but apparently not. Sometimes they can be a little light on with the meat, but gosh, it’s tasty. I often toss up between a side of chips or a side of lemon potatoes, with plenty of tzatziki to dip them in. Definitely try these chips. None of this frozen packet rubbish, these are fresh chips made from freshly cut potato. Tastes just like the chips Mum used to make. It’s always busy, but I’ve also always managed to get a table.

The ‘setting’ is a little unusual if you are expecting a ‘restaurant’ — another reviewer put it quite well describing it as an eatery. We dined on a Sunday night and the place was packed and buzzing — although the conflicting music from the place next door was a bit disconcerting. Between 4 adults, we shared a «platter for 2 — $ 60» plus a serve of prawns and(unnecessarily) a half serve of lemon potatoes. The mountain of food that came out on the platter alone would have been sufficient to satisfy our appetites, but the prawns were a tasty addition. If you like basic tasty good food, well cooked and quickly served, you won’t be disappointed. No complaints about any of the components(so so tender calamari, lamb cutlets, chicken & lamb, pita, 2 x dips, greek style salad, hand cut potatoes, lemony baked potatoes). I would definately recommend this place to my friends, even my husband wanted to go back there again this week!

BYO. No corkage. I could end this review there just with that one statement of awesomeness, but there is more to say on Char Char Yiros. The food here is delicious, simple, tasty, full flavoured, home style Greek food. Their charcoal dinners which include your choice of meats(lamb, chicken, combination, octopus), greek salad, chips, pita bread and garlic yoghurt sauce are immensely satisfying and incredibly good value. This place is incredibly popular and so finding a table to eat at will prove difficult at times, even on weeknights, but its worth it!

Without a doubt the best kebab-style dinner I’ve ever had, and no more expensive than the horrible doner stuff you find everywhere. Just next door to the Rumpus Room pub, this place does a roaring trade on a Friday and Saturday when legions of revellers flock there for their signature charcoal grilled yiros — traditional Greek kebabs. The staff are very friendly and efficient. After ordering you get either a paper ticket with your number on it, or you can even get a proper table number, take it to the Rumpus Room next door and have them delivery to you! If you’re looking for something to share with friends I recommend the trio of dips(you get to choose from their range — the tarama((caviar)) and melanzane((eggplant)) are especially good) with pita bread and some of their handcut chips. But if you’re dining alone you can’t go past their yiros wraps. Apart from the perfect charred crispiness of the meat’s exterior and the juicy succulence of the inside, the bread they use is delightful. Thicker than Lebanese bread, it’s chewy(in a good way) yet fluffy at the same time. Their haloumi and egglplant yiros is also very tasty and a good substitute for grilled meat for the vegos. They do a range of other traditional Greek dishes, including a very nice Moussaka and pescetarians will love their impossiibly tender grilled calamari served with a lemon and garlic marinade.

I finally got to Char Char Yiros, and it’s now one of my favourite discoveries of 2011. This place has everything I want: it’s cheap and cheerful, with amazing Greek food. Inside, Char Char Yiros looks like your local kebab joint with a few extras, like haloumi cheese and lemon potatoes. You order at the counter and choose a table. We tried the lamb and chicken combo platter(for two) for $ 36, and this was like nothing I’ve ever had at a kebab joint. The platter included charred lamb and chicken, grilled haloumi, pita bread, greek salad, and hot chips. The meat was delicious: crispy, juicy, and hot. I’ve always thought any type of food can be improved by being wrapped in something, and the pita bread was perfect for the job. Every element was great and altogether made a fantastic and huge meal that we couldn’t finish in the end. At $ 36 for two, it was one of the best(and best value) meals I’ve had in a while. I’ll be going back for another hit very soon.

When this little place first opened I moseyed on down here for the name, (Char Char reminded me of traditional wood smoked turkish fare.) I am so glad I decided to dine here because it served up some of the freshest and best greek food I’ve had. (And that’s saying something in West End.) Char Char specialises in traditional charcoal kebabs. The serving sizes are great for sharing and the quality is superb! What I love are the Char Char platters (a crazy epic feast of lamb, chicken or combo with greek salad, chips, grilled haloumi, pita bread and yoghurt garlic sauce.) and the range of delicious sauces available. (seriously go try the eggplant one.) Perfect for a night out with friends, the service here is super friendly and quick! (Wedged right next to the rumpus room you are also guaranteed quality people watching.) A definite must-try in West end!

I’m resisting the urge to write this review entirely in capitals. It’s just that it would be the easiest way to emphasise just how mind boggingly good, and endlessly satisfying Char Char is. I wish I had five stomachs so I could eat more in one sitting. It really doesn’t matter what you get– it’s all fantastic. West End is known for it’s Greek cuisine and Char Char is up there with the very best. My partner can rarely be convinced to go anywhere else if we’re in West End. We generally opt for the platter to share, which, without exception makes me execute my happy belly routine. The sheer ecstatic delight I experience at Char Char usually transforms me into some grotesque, culture-less beast who knows nothing of manners or class. I was eating my favourite dish, the stifatho and lemon potatoes the other day, when the Char Char routine launched into action: I forced myself to eat the last morsel left on the plate, abandoned my cutlery like I had no energy left, lifted up my shirt to allow my protruding belly to breathe, and rubbed it clockwise in tender circles to encourage the solid mass of Char Char delight to move south west. The routine ended with a hearty belch, and repeated sighs of satisfaction. If I smoked, I would’ve indulged in a post Char Char cigarette. What’s more is that the food is cheap. A lamb and halloumi yiros will cost you $ 7.50 and it’s damn near the best $ 7.50 you’d spend. When you’re done, roll next door onto a bean bag at Rumpus Room and get yourself a beer for dessert.
