This is a fantastic spot for Indian food and they also offer take away and delivery if you live locally. We have tried a range of dishes including butter chicken, chicken korma, lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka, salmon etc etc. They use real spices that you can actually see in the dishes and the mains are reasonably priced($ 20). They also offer free naan on takeaway orders! BYO too if you dine in!

My first time here tonight. Let’s get to the good stuff right now. The good was excellent. Rogan Josh, Butter Chicken, Pear Salad, Bread basket, signature Salmon — all great! Now let’s get to what this place needs to improve on. The lighting is crap. Looked like a cheap diner with very bright lights. The white walls looks too stark and bare. Who hung the pictures?! Why so high on the walls? The tables need some linen and candles if you charge $ 30 for a salmon dish. The drinks cooler needs to be out back not the the centre piece of what is a very cool bar — it looks like something from Fred’s lunch bar. There was no music. Dirty windows. The ladies washroom, from I heard, needs attention — now! The street front needs a make over. I could turn this place around in 3 days with a little attention to detail. My assessment is that it was a cool hip place when it opened but the original owners have either left or taken their eye off the ball. I hope they work on it because the good is great but you cannot maintain a good restaurant on food alone these days.

Number 11 on my hit parade of new places to try was Varq. I had to do a double take once I arrived as I am sure it was an Italian place last time I was here. But now it’s a rather pleasant Indian restaurant offering some of your favourites as well as some with a twist. The great thing is the extensive list — at the top of each page, no less — for the vegetarians amongst us. Our group of five ordered predominantly vego dishes and we were not disappointed. The tandoori broccoli was the stand out in the entrees. The paneer was the best of the mains. All your standard sides are on offer — rice /naan /chutney /raita /roti etc. Dishes have just the right ratios of sauce to substance and the service is polite and prompt. Pricing is reasonable — it was about $ 25 per head for us that evening. They are licensed, but allow BYO for a small fee(I think $ 5?). Free street parking is available alongside the kerb, or out the back in the evening. Note: there is a little wine bar called The Stanley just up the road. Meet there and wander down for a curry afterwards. Sweet.

Massive fan of Varq! Love the décor — the right mix of modern and traditional, incorporating an Indian feel to the place. Service was very friendly and attentive. Willing to provide further explanation of any menu items where required. The food was seriously sensational! The non-vegetarian starter plate was creative and delicious! Really authentic and flavoursome Butter Chicken and the most wonderful Goat Curry I’ve ever had. Ok perhaps the first Goat Curry I have had, but definitely the best. Maybe I should have said the best goat dish I’ve ever had, because I have had goat other ways :) And currently Varq is BYO, so pick up a bottle of something crisp and white to accompany this sensational spicy food and get yourself there!
