Hippo Creek Bottle Shop is a small South African food shop that sells an extensive range of South African foods, wines, beers and other bits and bobs. They also make their own biltong which I am a huge fan of. My favourite is their hottest biltong made with Carolina Reaper chillies which is guaranteed to burn twice. They do also have a big range of not so hot biltong which is also really good. The bloke that always seems to be in there is very friendly(he even gave me some tips for my own super hot chilli biltong!).

We were craving steak so we thought we would try Hippo Creek. The interior looked lovely and we were shown our seats quite quickly. The restaurant was busy, which is always a good sign, right? I ordered the waygu and my partner had the Lion Kill. We also ordered killer prawns. The killer prawns said they came in a minimum of 3 and from the sounds of them on the menu, I expected them to be huge. They were not! They were slightly bigger than average but not huge. The girl on the table next to us ordered some and hers were much bigger. My waygu was very chewy and dry. My partner had some and he said if it was cooked longer the sinew wouldn’t be so chewy. I tried to get a couple of wait staff’s attention to order some sauce, to make it more bearable and was successful after several attempts. The bbq sauce made my steak and chips easier to eat. All in all, for a meal that came to over $ 150, I don’t think it was value for money.

Hippo Creek is my local to work. Well, I say ‘is’ — I actually mean ‘was’. Week starting Dec 8 the price of everything across the board has gone up $ 2. Has the service got any better? Has the service got any quicker? Have the serving sizes got any bigger? Is the beer range any better? No is the answer, no. Value for money is no more at Hippo Creek. Sorry Hippo Creek(Waterford) — I won’t be back.

I had heard a lot about Hippo Creek so was really looking forward to it. unfortunately I was not warned about the prices. I was a bit surprised how expensive it all was. The food was good, but not as good as the price you spend on it. I ordered the chicken assaghai which was really awkward to eat. It is chicken hanging on a skewer(which swings) and is over a bowl of chips. It was a bit hard to try and pull the chicken off. The oil dripped over the chips which is the point but I wasn’t a fan. I won’t be going back there are a lot more places in Perth which have better food and cheaper rates. Although the restaurant itself looked really nice and it did have a cool atmosphere but yeah there are better places.

Very slow service, bad seats which stick into your hips and ordinary food. For 120 $ for two mains and water I expected much better. Subiaco was much better.

The food here was extremely ordinary. Meat lacked flavour and the portion sizes were extremely small, which given the lack of flavour may have actually been a blessing in disguise. I am shocked at the prices they put on this bland food. For the price they charge you would expect some high quality, but alas it was not. I went to catch up with friends so did not go in with expectations of a nice meal but if I had, I would have been mightily disappointed, As it is, I will never return to this, or any other, Hippo Creek restaurant.

Disappointed!!! I’ve been to the Hillary’s one a couple of times and always thoroughly enjoyed it, so I was keen to try the waterford restaurant as it is close to home! The staff were pleasant and we were seated quickly and soon after ordered entrees. They came out quickly and tasted good until we discovered some of the buffalo wings were partly RAW!!! Personally I believe serving raw chicken is unacceptable. The waitress apologised, but that was it. I then partially lost my appetite, but this didn’t really matter as the mains took what seemed like forever to come out. I’m not sure if it was because of my bad experience from the buffalo wings that I was put off, but the mains were disappointing. My steak was cooked how I had requested but tasted burnt on the outside. The chips were dry and also disappointing. Overall I’m very surprised that the Waterford restaurant was such a let down compared to the Hillary’s one.

I’ve been meaning to try this place ever since I first heard about it opening up last year. You see, the Waterford Plaza underwent an expansive upgrade around 2011 with the addition of a Reject Shop, Supa IGA and in mid 2012, a smart casual restaurant and bar called Hippo Creek. Although I frequently shop at Waterford Plaza, I’d never got around to eating at this place. Earlier tonight, I made the impulsive decision to dine here tonight rather than cook or buy pizza/KFC like I usually do. I made a booking for a table for one(because I will remain forever alone) and rushed down as soon as I could. Parking is a breeze, if there’s no available bays near the vicinity of the restaurant, there will be parking available elsewhere at the shopping centre, all of which is only a couple of minutes walking distance. Service was outstanding. From the delightful lad who seated me to the insanely attractive waitress who served me, who for the record is the hottest waitress I’ve seen in my life, the staff were attentive, friendly and a pleasure to deal with. Even though I only ordered a starter meal, salt and pepper squid and blue cheese dipping sauce, it was more than satisfying and certainly filling enough. The blue cheese sauce was easily one of the best and most original dipping sauces I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. The atmosphere was great, a very casual vibe all around with touches of fanciness scattered about, albeit it felt a bit too noisy and crowded when I went down. Prices are unfortunately one of the downsides. Although the meal I ate was fairly priced($ 25 including a soft drink), the prices I saw for other items on the menu were obscenely expensive, particularly the steaks, the cheapest of which I saw for $ 36.50 and the most expensive being something like $ 100(you can get the steaks cooked to 6 different levels of grilling, ranging from blue to well done). Other items on the menu looked fairly delectable although it was difficult to find a main course that didn’t break your wallet. I don’t drink alcohol anymore although I perused through the wine list, which was considerably expansive and consisted of many fancy wines, beers and other miscellaneous spirits. All in all, a grand dining experience, despite the awkwardness of being the only person there who was eating alone and spending the majority of my time staring at the extremely cute waitress who served me. I’ve told my father repeatedly about this place and we had been trying to organize a time to head down for the last several months. After I told him about how good the experience was, he was well jealous and now wants to head down as soon as he can to see how good it is for himself. Convenient location too, approximately 15 minutes drive from the city and 5 minutes from South Perth and Como. Highly recommended, one of the finest restaurants I’ve been to so far.

Steak Steak and more steak Decided to finally try a Hippos Creek steak house after hearing all the hype over the last few years. I have been to similar places(LAPA in Subiaco) so I was aware of what to expect. This new steakhouse in Waterford has a warm, casual atmosphere with both a restaurant area and also a bar area with differing menus. We decided to grab a seat in the restaurant area so that we would have more meal choices. Service was friendly and very professional and I was actually able to book on the phone prior to arriving. We were promptly shown to our table and given water and our menus. I have been hearing about the Hunters Assaghai for some time now so I decided on this and we shared an entrée of Buffalo Wings. Both came out as requested together and both presented well. One thing to note was we did ask for the meat to be medium rare and 3 out of the 5 pieces on the skewer came out more medium. The Buffalo wings were quiet spicy but also a bit greasy. We found the meat a little chewy but then again when comparing to other cuts(scotch and fillet) this cut will always seem that way. It was quiet flavorsome though. One other thing of note was that the table was not wiped clean after taking away our mains as we were asked if we wanted any dessert. I noted this but it didn’t effect our meal as we decided against dessert anyway. Overall service was very friendly, professional and not wanting. A decent place to eat. Nice atmosphere but a bit noisy then again considering its family friendly that is to be expected. I will probably come back to check out a special that is currently on for Surf and Turf with a lobster tail.
