Cortex Counselling and Consulting

Cortex Counselling on Burwood Highway is located in the strip of white terrace buildings. It’s near the end towards the police station. Parking is available out front but this usually gets pretty busy around lunchtime, as a few doors down there are a lot of fast food joints. I recommend parking around the back in Tyner road.
Inside the building it is really nice. You go up a set of stairs and enter a small waiting room. It is a pretty standard Counselling waiting area — magazines, a few plants and a water cooler are in the waiting area and patients sit awkwardly trying to avoid eye contact and listen to the calming music.
There are a few different Cortex Counselling locations but the reason I am writing about this one is because Kerry Genovese practices there. She is absolutely fantastic and without doubt the best counselor I have ever seen, and there have been quite a few.
The sessions are conducted in little rooms, comfortable enough with two to three armchairs and some paintings on the wall. The room I always went to was at the back of the building looking onto the staff car park — although mostly Kerry kept the blinds closed.
The service here is awesome and Kerry commendable for the amount of variety in her treatment. I really liked that she would extend her working hours to accommodate my availability and that if she didn’t know how to deal with something she would seek help from her superiors after getting my permission. The other thing I liked was that she didn’t talk down to me just because I was a teenager — it’s amazing how many psychologists do that.
It is a little bit pricey with $ 125 per hour on weekdays before 5pm. Pensioners and students only pay $ 100 though. After 5pm it goes up to $ 140. If you are with medicare and you get a referral from your gp then you can claim it back. I generally only paid about $ 30 per session doing it this way.
