Had a nice dinner here tonight. Restaurant was quite empty but there was a steady stream of take alway customers. A small place well decorated with Thai art works and artifacts. All their serving dishes(plates, vases, tea pots, etc) have their logo stamped on them. Oh snd the pots were elephants. I ordered the chargrilled beef. Wasn’t sure what to expect since the description said grilled to perfection. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was it grilled just right for me(medium to medium well), the portion was large and tasty. I thought it would taste salty with the soy sauce marinade and over cooked but not a bit. The texture was good as well. The beef was served with vegetables on the side and a sweet tangy sauce. The latter could be the salad dressing or a sauce to dip the beef in. Either way, only the vegetables were questionable with regards to their freshness. I saw others order a curry dish that was served over a candle light to keep the dish warm. Nice touch. Rice is extra and it was either jasmine rice or coconut rice. Waitress said coconut rice was too oily for her so I picked the jasmine rice. Served in a traditional dish, the rice was very nicely done. Service is OK. The cashier(might be the boss) was constantly talking to the two waitresses In Thai. I need ask for plain water, they don’t offer either. Very polite staff, then again, I find Australians very friendly all round. Now go have some authentic Thai food.

Lanna’s Tom yum is probably the best one I’ve tried in Melbourne! Super flavoursome and very much like ones I had in Thailand = perfect! The Pad Thai, not so much of a fan. Although, based on the Tom yum alone, I’ll be back. Plus: the cutlery and plates they use are very authentic. great cosy little restaurant

Lovely little place on Flemington Road. Good food & service. The serve ware used is definitely interesting. Had tom yum soup, larb salad, green curry with jasmine rice & sticky rice pudding with mango icecream. Was perfect.

Love this little place opposite of the Royal Melbourne. Everything is great down to the beautiful dishes and crockery in which they serve the food. What I always order: beef massaman, green curry chicken, roti bread and coconut rice. I also love the coconut juice as they serve it with a big spoon and big chunks of coconut, so refreshing.

My housemate reckons there isn’t a decent pad Thai in North Melbourne but I think Lanna Thai makes a pretty good one. He’s right — it isn’t AMAZING, but it’s pretty damn good and when all I can be bothered doing is walking somewhere close to pick up a takeaway pad Thai, this is where I come. It isn’t greasy at all and comes with plenty of prawns. The sauce isn’t overly bursting with flavour and, I’ll be honest, I usually add some chilli when I get home, but I like things spicy and the sauce is nice and light rather than sickly sweet, as many pad Thai sauces are. I think it’s a good dinner — and it’s pretty cheap. I’ve never eaten in the restaurant, mostly because of its location on Flemington Rd, which I’m never hanging around(does anyone?) but it is a nicely intimate, warmly lit space.

C suggested that we meet for lunch at this restaurant because it is close to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where C works. It is just a short walk from the hospital entrance and the small restaurant was busy with lunchtime business but we were still able to get a table for two downstairs. It looks like there is more seating space upstairs. The restaurant is attractively decorated in a Thai style. You can sit on traditional Thai cushions at a few of the tables or on European chairs. The style is complete, right down to the cutlery and crockery. I was glad that C decided to order a pot of tea with lunch because it came in an attractive elephant shaped teapot — Thais love their elephants. The menu is extensive and C only had an hour for lunch but the service was efficient and we easily had time for entrees and main dishes. The food was attractively presented and tasted as good as it looked. I’m not that familiar with Thai food, so I’m having difficulty remembering the names, I had a sizzling platter of chicken and vegetables and C had prawns in red curry. And we both agreed that we should have lunch here again.
