This is a true gem. The food is consistently great, with top quality/​fresh ingredients and a menu that keeps favourites whilst offering sth new every month. Their coffee is excellent, and the local-​joint atmosphere is hard to beat. Plus, best staff ever. Seriously! These folks always have a good time, giving the place a sense of community that you won’t get at Short Round or other ‘fancy’ breakfast spots.

Brother Alec has really good food and really good service and isn’t too loud and overcrowded like the majority of other places on High Street.
I have ordered the BLAT more than once and have never been disappointed. It’s next level delish. Great alternative to some of the more well-​known places around Northcote/​Thornbury if you’re looking for a relaxed brunch and super yum food.

Not the most fashionable end of High St, but sitting in the sun enjoying their Korean BBQ Pork sandwich is delicious.

Went here when my beloved short round was closed on a public holiday as they are literally next door to each other.
Staff here are absolutely lovely and that’s why I’ve given this place the rating that I have. They were efficient, friendly and and didn’t rush us to leave.
Food is ok. It’s executed well enough but didn’t blow me away. I had the huevos rancheros — it was fine but not the best I’ve had.
Standards are so high these days and when you have a place like short round so close who are absolutely killing it, you need something a little more than these guys offer right now.
So I guess I’m saying I wouldn’t go here outright but it’s fine if you need to eat and short round is busy.

I love this place so much I keep coming back every Saturday. Standout dishes are the huervos rancheros and bbq pork belly with home made corn bread. Coffee is fantastic too. It’s only small so be patient and wait for a table — it won’t take long and it’s well worth it. Staff are so friendly and enthusiastic, no hint of the snooty hipsterism prevalent in similar establishments closer to the city

I have been travelling out of my way every morning before work to get coffee from Brother Alec for about 6mths now. Arguably one of best cafes on high street northcote /​thornbury! I have tried every other café along high street and I always come back here. Had breakfast here several times as well, and the food is cool and quirky but not too adventurous that it scares you off! Produce is good quality too, you can tell! The staff are just so lovely too! They clearly have great little family vibe going! Love brother Alec!
