I’ve heard so much about the Met, that when I found they had a store in Sydney, I just had to visit. I’ve never been to the Met, but I was hoping to find the essence that makes it so popular. I was upset as the store was like any other art store. It didn’t have an ‘awe’ feel to it. Agreed, the products were pretty interesting and the branding was there but I felt it lacked appeal.
I really admire Frank Lloyd Wright and was quite pleased to find interesting items I could buy. But I’m quite sure that the Baroque Glasses would serve as a constant reminder that I had not yet seen the Met, so I decided to postpone my purchase.

Umm, why?
Last time I checked, The Metropolitan Museum of Art was quite the toddle away from George Street in Sydney, so why do we have a shop here? It’s not like you can pop in for an exhibit and then buy a souvenir on your way out. Here you can just buy the souvenir. The exhibits are on THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD. And really, not to belabour the point, why buy an umbrella proclaiming the Met when you haven’t actually been there? I don’t get it.
The staff are nice, and the stuff is pretty to look at, but honestly. If you want repro Tiffany jewellery or some overpriced educational kids toys or a replica of your fav Tang dynasty ‘resting dancer’ sculpture, then you can get all of the above here. But really, I’d rather do that actually at the Met. One day.
