Seemingly unnoticeable from the street, this little bread roll place is a new go-to place of mine. Particularly when you’re short on cash and time(mostly a combination of the two when you can’t get to an ATM), it’s a great little stopover spot when you’re on the go and don’t have time to sit down, waste time and eat. As the shop name would suggest, they predominantly serve chicken and pork Vietnamese-style rolls — and the ones with pâté, soy sauce and coriander too. For an easy $ 4.50 you can choose what you want to fill your roll, and an extra 50c qualifies you to a can of soft-drink. There’s something yummy about the mayonnaise they use, as if they have added fried onion to it — it is hands down delicious. On my way out I also noticed that they sell juice, and quite cheaply at that. I usually buy a Spring Valley mango and banana nectar drink, and they supplied an alternative brand(an Aussie product at that) for only $ 3. So safe to say, this little place is very popular with the typically hungry uni student.

It’s a simple shop front with a simple message — $ 4BBQ Pork Rolls. From my watching of various food shows, I was aware of Vietnamese sandwiches, or Banh Mi if you want to get authentic, and had been wanting to try one for a while, and for $ 4?! I’d be losing money if I didn’t have one! I wandered inside, was greeted warmly by the tiny lady behind the counter and ordered my edible bargain. Now, what went into it, I’m not overly sure. First off, there was spreading of a couple of things(one was mayonnaise, I think, the other was grey, and may have been a paté of some sort, but don’t quote me on that). After that the pork went in. It was definitely pork, so that was good. And then 2 rectangular shaped pieces of, erm, stuff were put in. I say stuff because I’m not sure even DNA testing would be able to work it out for sure — one bit was pink with a jelly like substance dotted around it, while the other was grey and sorry looking. I politely asked what it was, «It pork!» Of course it is! Then came the healthy bit, some carrot, bit of lettuce and a couple of sprigs of coriander for a bit of freshness. «You want chilli?» Chilli on a sandwich? Hmmm, maybe it’ll counter any effects of the UFM(Unidentified Filling Meat). Chilli goes on. Then the final touch, a drizzling of sauce. Not sure what, but surely harmless! And there we go, sandwich complete! Now the dangerous part — eating it. With the interesting ingredients that went into making this crusty sandwich, obviously there was a little apprehension of what was about to happen with my taste buds, but one bite in and this was forgotten. Who cares what species the rectangular bits came from, or how long the mayo had been sitting there at room temperature, or that the grey spread stuff was actually cement, it all combined into an awesome roll of deliciousness! So if you want a bargain lunch, then head to Bread Rolls On Harris, and for god’s sake, don’t think about what you’re eating!
