The Aurora is close to my office so we sometimes go there for after work drinks or Christmas parties. The downstairs area is for gambling and doesn’t appeal to me at all. The upstairs area is huge so it can pack a big crowd on Friday nights, but the bar staff are efficient and there is never a long queue for a drink. $ 5 cider during happy hour(probably also beer and wine) is a bargain in Sydney town. I think the rooftop area is mostly reserved for functions, but it’s also a good space. This pub is a solid offering, full of average joes enjoying an evening with friends. Hipsters and wannabes need not apply.

I really like this pub however this is one big but that goes with that — only when the upper levels are open. The second floor and the roof are really cool, however they aren’t always open(usually only on a Friday and Saturday night, as far as I can tell). I came by here on a Wednesday recently and only the lower ground area was open, and that is basically a sports bar and a VIP lounge(and the sports bar is pretty small). Needless to say I decided to move on. However, I then returned on a Friday night, and sure enough the upper stories were open, so I decided to grab a drink. What is even better is that they have an elevator that services those levels, which makes this pub very accessible. Even if the roof isn’t open(I don’t think it was the first time I came here) the second level has a balcony though it is fairly narrow and usually full of smokers.

the lamb ribs are pretty good and they are well priced. the staff are friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming and warm. there was some trivia night on and there were many laughs even though we were playing. drink are not too expensive and the portions are a decent size for what you pay.

LOVE this place. Rooftop bar, cheap drinks, $ 10 meals — it’s a win win. A great venue.

Aurora Hotel looks unassuming from the outside — just like your regular pub in Surry Hills. In many ways, it is your regular pub, but it’s much bigger than it looks. Three storeys, with the gamblers on level one, the eaters and loungers on level two, and the smokers and loungers on level three(the roof top bar). We came in for a light lunch and it wasn’t too bad for pub fare. We ordered a beef burger on Turkish with chips on the side and were pretty satisfied with that. They have a few $ 10 cocktails on offer during happy hour, so it’s not a bad place to begin your night.
