One of Sydney’s best cafes and not just for the coffee. An eclectic menu which used to have kedgeree on it. You won’t go wrong with any of this Cafes offerings. It’s also the home of «Coffee Mornings», a weekly informal gathering of people who self organise via Twitter and Facebook. Follow #coffeemornings and I hope to see you there some time.

I had my flight cancel and missed my connection. Ended up laying over in Sydney for the first time! I found this cozy place wandering around and decided to duck in. Warm and friendly staff mixed in with loyal locals. I ordered the banana bread with espresso butter and a chai tea. So scrumptious! I wish I had one in my neighborhood! I’ll be back one day… :)

In short: Come here for brunch. Fresh, healthy food that’s light on your stomach and makes you feel good about yourself afterwards. Mostly vegetarian. Get the coffee. Get the affogato. Food: Pretty damn good. The affogato was amazing. I just regret not being tired that day and so not getting one of their coffees. What a damn shame. The options here are extremely healthy and almost all vegetarian, so if that’s your thing, you’ll absolutely adore it here. I wouldn’t say it’s filling, but that’s not what you’d come here for. It’s a great place for brunch and lunch. Their most recommended options are ‘The Mothership Bowl’ and the ‘Cured salmon pastrami’ if you’re looking for a proper lunch. Ambience: It’s an adorable, little café(little is the key word here) with little outdoor tables and chairs, and blankets in case you get cold. Even if you choose to sit inside, the huge windows are wide open and you basically feel like you’re sitting on the street anyway. It’s great! Also a huge plus that this café is in a small side street with very little car traffic going through so you don’t have the loudness that usually comes with sitting on the street. Also, people are always walking by with their tiny, adorable dogs(how very Surry — really, there were 2 Pomeranians and a dog walker who walked by in the 30 minutes I sat there for). Service: Quick and polite. No complaints here. Transport: It’s difficult to get here by public transport — trust me, we got lost running around in circles in Surry Hills for about 20 minutes. Maybe that’s just because I’m terrible with directions and need to be led around like a child though hahaha. However, I’m sure it’s even harder to park around here, so maybe just take the bus. It’s not a long walk if you don’t get lost — about 10 minutes from the nearest bus stop on Elizabeth St, I think.

Great breakfast and great service… one of the beat meals I’ve had while in Australia.

Wow just wow. The best breakfast I’ve had in Sydney for sure. We had the banana bread with espresso butter, poached eggs on toast, and the Reuben sandwich. The sandwich was amazing! The meat was smoked wagyu and the potato salad it came with was the best potato salad I’ve had in my life. The nana bread was very good as well with the espresso butter. My girlfriend loves the eggs on toast. And the latte I had was pretty good coffee as well. Great place and I will be coming back before I leave Sydney.

Absolutely love the coffee at this place. It is an institution in Surry Hills and I stop there most days. The staff are lovely and cool without being pretentious. Words of warning: their prices just went up which do make it an expensive coffee and they do not serve skim milk(which it would be good if they rethought).

Love the décor and the vibe. Also has good coffee, but let down by the unfriendly staff. With so much choice in Surrey Hills I’d rather go somewhere with good coffee AND nice staff.

Coming off a long stint in Melbourne, I have to say the coffee here is just ok. I had a long black and, and found it relatively thin compared to my favorite Melbourne spots. Very little of the umami and acidity emerged. The brew emitted a wonderful chocolate and nutty aroma, but it was subdued in the flavor. I liked the ambience — it was packed, the service was friendly, and the split between a takeaway bar and sit-down joint was well thought out. I’m not sure I’d recommend it as a destination spot, though.

If I had more days in Sydney, I would have come here for breakfast everyday! The avo toast with coriander(cilantro!), lime, feta, black sesame seeds with the side of poached eggs was superb and coffee was excellent!

A MUSTVISIT in Sydney! Here in Australia from America for a short time, and found this to be the BEST coffee shop/café we have visited, atmosphere//style is dope, staff is super rad, funny, friendly, and coffee///tea are ridiculously good(pour-over option available which is the best there is, very simple coffee not muddy or bitter, clean, refreshing & full of flavor) food smells amazing, didn’t get to try it but by the smell/menu/pics it seems healthy & tasty. Great work ladies & gents, keep killing it daily

Single Origin Roasters is one of the originals on the so called urban city coffee movement and is still leading the Sydney roasting scene. Comfortably compact inside with some wooden seating outside, a tiny café where you can get your coffee and tasty seasonal feed. The coffee menu is extensive, from your normal espresso and milk or black coffee to filter, Aeropress, cold drip and pour over. You can always ask the friendly staff if you don’t know your coffee terms. I had the miso buttered corn, shallot, braised greens, asparagus and deviled poached egg. Perfectly poached egg. And my kids loved this dish, a huge plus. The corn was tasty, but I was wishing the braised greens were something else, it was bland. My husband had the chorizo with fried egg, salsa verde, caramelised onion and tomato on rye toast and it was delicious. It was tasty, I found myself stealing a few bites out of my husband’s breakfast and salsa verde so good I had to restrain myself from licking the plate afterwards. It was a pleasant experience that I would definitely come back for. A great way to brighten up my morning!

Decided I must go to this place because of reviews on Unilocal.I can’t deny the photos of awesome muffins and specialty breakfasts were über tempting. So I walked over from my hotel at 6:45am, they open at 6:30am. Got to the place, it’s small and simple with a couple of tiny tables inside. The young man who greeted me was super friendly and helpful, he said they switch up the items on the breakfast menu every 4 – 6 weeks, so stuff you see on Unilocal from a few months back is no longer on offer. Breakfast menu has 5 or 6 choices, some sweet, some savory. They do keep their famous banana bread there, which they top with espresso butter. I started with a coffee. Sadly, as a coffee lover I have to say theirs was ordinary at best. It was a tad too cold, and truly no aroma or a real flavor kick. It might be okay for others, but if you need a rich and deeper espresso taste, this one won’t do. It was very pretty visually :-) To eat, I ordered a very nice corn and spinach bowl with asparagus and a poached egg on top. Let me tell you, this was art! The dish was satisfying and very aromatic, garnished with cilantro. Both yum and genius! I could not leave without trying the famous banana bread, but I regret it now. It had so many rave reviews, maybe it made me expect something better. It was good, moist, nothing majorly special. The espresso butter is placed on top as a puck that melts on the toasted slice, looks good but I didn’t taste anything different about it. It was just a nice addition to the bread. Total: $ 24AUD + gratuity. They have awesome muffins that come out of the oven by 8am so if you want those don’t come too early. I do recommend the place for the special breakfast options that are not your run of the mill bacon n’ eggs. Enjoy :)

If you are in a hurry, you are faster to catch a plane to Ethiopia, pick your own coffee beans and stop over in Turkey on the way home to roast them. The barristers there seem to be under the impression that business flourishes when you tell your hipster douche bag stories loudly and take your time brewing the much needed coffee, even when you see a long line of paying customers waiting. You have to arrive at work 25 minutes early, just so you can take a take away coffee. And then it’s often burned. But if you like tasteless bitter coffee, this is your place. With the whole street being a coffee shop paradiso, it’s not that difficult to find a better supply.

Excellent coffee — possibly the best I’ve tried in Sydney. The baked goods selection is mouthwatering, especially the banana bread with espresso butter. I was hoping they would have lamingtons(this place specifically came up in a Google search for them) but to my dismay, I was informed they no longer sell them. Overall fantastic café!

I came here expecting a full on café with big meals. But it’s really not like that and that’s ok. The primary focus here is on coffee with meals being a little more on the snacky side with lovely sandwiches and a few simple breakfasts and pastries. I loved that my strong latte came in a smallish cuo meaning it was really strong. I also loved the ceramic — it felt good in my hands and was a joy to drink from. I also grabbed a pastrami sandwich which was perhaps the best pastrami sandwich I’ve ever had. I was a big monster of a sandwich with awesome bread and piles of warm pastrami. My only complaint is that it would be nice to get breakfast all day, but it’s not the end of the world. This is a top coffee shop with some great simple meals.

Okay, so I did end up giving this place another chance. And actually, the coffee was amazing. I got the soy cappuccino. The same thing I got the first time I was here. But the first time the coffee was awful. So bitter and really, almost undrinkable. Well, this time they perfected it. I must’ve got a good barista this time :) Well, I can’t give it 5 stars because of the first experience I had here but this café is definitely amazing if you get a good barista. :)

Mmmmm satisfying brekkie at Single Origin Roasters! Loved the creative hipster atmosphere, the service, coffee, and food. Upon arrival at Single Origin Roasters, the street was crowded with people(a lot were waiting for take away coffee). I was delighted to see a waitress clear up a seat right when we got there, and we were seated right away. Very interesting and hipster interior design. There were lamps made out of coffee pipes, an open kitchen right next to where we ate, hipster ceiling and wall designs, hand written stuff here and there, pastries on display– it was very welcoming in general. Service was great — everyone who worked there was in a good mood and it was contagious. They made funny comments here and there and made sure we were doing all right once in a while. I had an in house Chai Latte and it was mmmmmmmh :) it was nice and creamy and the chai was nice and strong. I also got to try the short black and a pour over– I’m not familiar with short blacks and pour overs so I don’t have anything else to compare it with, but it was strong. that’s what I can tell you: P I also liked the tea and coffee ware they served our drinks in. Almost felt like Japanese stone cups. Not just any regular mugs. For food, I got to try the banana bread with melted espresso butter. It made me smile real big :) The crust was crunchy, and the middle was soft and fluffy. The espresso butter was unique– I could actually taste the espresso! I also go to try the Bacon and Egg Roll; House-cured bacon, fried egg and Tomato Chutney+ cheddar. Gotta say it was pretty expensive for a breakfast sandwich, but it was a really really good sandwich haha. The sauce was really unique and all the flavors came together really well. If you’re down to spend a good amount for a really nice brekkie/brunch, this is the place for you to go :)

My very first Australian flat white experience. And it was pretty good! It even comes with a cute little design. It was definitely WAY better than my other(and only) flat white experience — a Starbuck’s in NYC.(yeah…) Our server was cool and patient. I wasn’t familiar with all the different styles of coffees but he was happy to explain it. I ordered a cold brew at first and he asked if I like really dark coffee. And since I don’t, he said he would let me try it before I decided. Unfortunately, they ran out of it — so that’s when I settled on the flat white. For breakfast, I went with the bacon and egg roll($ 14). It has ‘house-cured bacon’, a fried egg, tomato chili chutney, and cheddar cheese. It’s a tad pricey for a breakfast sammie but it was really good. The chutney made it stand out and gave it the perfect level of spice — just enough to wake you up. A lot(or pretty much most) restaurants in Sydney won’t let you split the bill, but they let us do that here. The café wasn’t too busy for a Wednesday morning at around 9, but I’m assuming it’s because most people are at work already. However, there was a long line a couple of doors down — which I believe is where you can get their coffee to go. Now I wish I had gotten something to go to bring with me to Bondi. But then again, I don’t think my friends would have appreciated a highly-caffeinated Mel while they were trying to quietly relax and tan at the beach.

I can’t believe I am saying this, but I thought I had some of the best coffee in Sydney and also one of the most wonderful treats to complement it. I truly felt like I walked into a typical modern Australian café. It felt a little like a place where«hipsters», trendy people, normal looking people, people with quirks, sophisticated people, and friendly people with neighbourly love would love to hang out. I had probably the most amazing banana bread. And I am not going to find anything like it. Slightly toasty, with a nice sprinkle of powdered sugar, and the flavour of the espresso butter almost made this banana bread taste like an excellent French toast. You really need to use a knife and a fork to properly eat this banana bread, unlike other versions I had back in the States. The milk coffee served as an excellent complement to the banana bread. Presentation was impressive, the flavour was excellent, had a nice creaminess, and the aftertaste was great. This was definitely a great coffee I would not mind having frequently to start an exciting morning in Sydney. Service was very friendly, and there’s a decent amount of outdoor seating to do some«people watching». Overall, I believe had the best banana bread in Australia and probably some of the most wonderful coffee in Sydney so far. If you are looking for a great place to «kick-start» your morning or to truly end your«arvo» in a nice area in Sydney, this place is a great choice. I think this place is going to be one of my favourite cafes in Sydney so far.

These guys are solid. The welcome is warm, with toasty knee blankets offered for those of us sitting outside in the winter air. The service is chilled out and friendly. Often this is code for«slack», but here it’s code for«we know we’re good, we know how to give good service and we don’t need to be stuffy or precious about it». I like it. The menu is interesting, with plenty of things OTHER than eggs or avo on toast; though you can get those too if you like a classic. I went for the Kedgeree with quinoa, smoked trout, egg, silverbeet and goat curd. I would have liked more green action in the bowl(a few flecks of green don’t really cut it in the roughage department if you ask me) but otherwise I really enjoyed an alternative to toast for breakfast. The coffee? Well I drank four of them in two days and they were all perfectly executed. Bloody delicious. Pro top: Nerd it up and order an Aeropress.
