Café’s with personality and character? Head to Deus Ex Machina if you’re around Oxford Street and wanting to try something a bit different. I ordered the Chai last time but the next time, I’ll just stick to a coffee. Great to see this combination and would really love to check out their other shop/café in Camperdown.

I’m a sucker for alternative spaces being turned into cafes. Deus Ex Machina is a bike shop first, with the spare parts and machinery to prove it. I won’t pretend I know anything about bikes, but I will report on the rustic and laid back nature of their café space. The staff members are also awesome and will entertain a conversation while making a delicious coffee, and with ease. Deus Café is a hybrid outdoor /indoor space. The open garage-type conversion makes you unsure which you’re standing in. Off the Surry Hills beaten path on Bourke Street, this little café is out of the way enough to give it a calm feeling, but close enough to the flamboyant calls from Oxford street to remind you that you’re still in the city. I went to Deus on a weekday mid-morning to post up and do some work. I ordered a soy chai which was brewed with honey, and a serve of vegimite toast. Their menu boasts some deluxe sandwiches, but I was feeling plain. Next time, I will definitely order the corned beef, gruyère, pickles, sauerkraut and Dijon mustard on sourdough. I just wish Deus served beer to wash that down with. But then on the other hand, I guess beer and bikes don’t really mix.
