Average to say the least. If you love phở don’t go. Having lived near Victoria street, this place is barely comparable. The beef phở is more than twice as expensive and the quality, taste and size all inferior.

Decided to try MoPho for a takeaway work lunch and boy was I rewarded! Ordered the cucumber, pork belly and watermelon salad. Big, big serve of melt-in-your-mouth pork belly goodness, with crisp cubes of watermelon and cucumber to offset the guilty pleasure. The price was about right for the serving, it would be good to see some cheaper lunch specials for those on the go.

MoPho is a good standard to have in the area, tucked neatly into narrow Yarra Lane, a short walk from South Yarra station and accompanied by a smattering of cafes, from a corner sushi place to self-serve fro-yo, and George Calombaris’ latest venture, Mama Baba, on the far end. My man and I ducked in around 8:30 last night for a casual dinner — he ordered the hokkien stir-fry with slow roasted pork belly and greens, and I opted for the shredded chicken noodle soup with sesame, chili oil and cabbage — the lights were dim, the earthen tables inviting, the service extremely friendly. All in all, the atmosphere was wonderfully cozy, perfect for the day’s wet weather. His noodles were flavorful and dotted with rich pork belly, my soup broth full-bodied, and most notably chock full of perfectly poached chicken breast. At $ 15 per bowl, you won’t find gizzards or slightly more questionable(if not more authentic) meatstuffs here, so if you are looking for a bowl of pure authenticity this may not be your bet. While the food is good quality and mighty tasty, it probably won’t change your life either. But as for a reliable stand-by in the neighborhood, with a neat little interior, it’s very much welcomed.

Noodles! One of everything please! If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful bowl of $ 5 maggi-esk noodles — this isn’t the place for you. If you want more adventurous flavour combinations and a big hearty bowl of noodle deliciousness for around the $ 15 mark, come here. I had sweet potato noodles(I don’t know how they did this but they were clear and intriguing!) with salmon, chilli and roasted pumpkin. MMmm these are a few of my favourite things, it went down a treat without leaving me feeling like I devoured my body weight in heavy noodles. Definitely heading back to try their ramen and other combinations.

This places has fantastic asian dishes split into categories like soup, salad, noodles, curry. It is not cheap fix asian to any standards, at least $ 15 for each dish but it is definitely worth it for a special lunch. Funky décor inside and almost always guaranteed to get a table. At the moment you get 20% off dishes during lunch hours.

Brought to you by the dudes that gave Melbourne St Ali, MoPho is right at home in South Yarra. It’s hip, it’s cool, it’s offbeat and it’s tasty. To be perfectly fair, you pay the price for all these things — you’re looking at around twice the price for a bowl of noodle soup here than you would be in Footscray — but what you’re really paying for is the ambience and the Westernisation of things. Whilst the chefs seem to know their way around a bowl of phở, when they say ‘shredded chicken’ you get hand-shredded chicken breast, not the unmentionable, cheaper parts of a chook you’ll find in the more authentic haunts. In all honesty it’s not very reasonable to compare these two ends of the spectrum. MoPho takes the humble noodle soup and turns it up a notch, using higher quality ingredients than those seen in other establishments. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful and the drinks are good. They can even mess around with the dishes to make them edible for those with food intolerances. Yay! MoPho… get at it.
