$ 10 burger and a pot on Monday nights are both tasty and satisfying. $ 7 pints all day everyday are also competitive for the area. The George feels casual and there are several separate spaces for groups, as well as out-front and out-back tables. Unfortunately, they’re a little quick(at times) to shutdown the coffee machine !

We were pretty hungry on a public holiday and headed down to south Melbourne for a bite to eat. Our regular haunts were closed so upon seeing the daily special of a burger and pint for $ 10 we decided to give it a go. The pub itself has a nice ambiance pretty casual and relaxed with both indoor and outdoor seating. No a/c or fans which meant it is get a little stuffy. Warning: be hungry these burgers are huge! I ordered the George burger which came with beef, lettuce, tomatoe cheese, mayo and some form of relish. He ordered the smokey bacon which had BBQ sauce caramelised onions, 2 slices of cheese and a beef patty served on a Turkish roll. Both came with a serve of fries The burgers were pretty tasty with home made patties but they were enormous. The couple next to is shared theirs. I, not normally one to not finish a meal barely ate any bread. Great value for money if you want a cheap tasty meal.

There’s a lot of pub’s in south Melbourne. Even though this is the case the concentration has thinned out since it’s prime when this suburb was blanketed by pubs. Most still remain, and the majority are on corners of blocks. The George whilst not a stratospheric gastro pub like O connel’s etc, is still pretty good. It’s that mid range pub with a good focus on food. The menu comes in a cool faux newspaper arrangement, which works quite well. Then George retains a better design and interior in terms of look and layout than a lot of the other pubs in this area. Classic pub food is available, and all the other favourites are here too. Beer on tap, Parama’s and a Tv for sports, with lots of seating outside. Bar area is good, standard but good selection of drinks. There’s options too for fine dining or events. the main entry door on the corner can get a bit stuck however. The George is probably more so what I’d look for if i went to a pub/on my side of where I’d want to be. The pulled lamb burger is almost Souva/Burger combination, with tender soft meat. It has the mustard sauce and the chips with. It’s also blimming tasty and quite a decent serving, which is always a good thing. Beers on tap are a bit meh, but there is Murray’s whale ale. The staff seem to be equally divided between bearded hipsters and Irish nationals, nothing wrong with that though.

In hurry so in the hope save at least someone from going here as I will be back to write a better review but thought to at least write a quick line to say don’t trust any of the positive reviews here they have obviously written themselves. Terrible Terrible Terrible! Don’t Go — Don’t!

This is one large and spacious pub with a quaint courtyard outback that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s a laid-back vibe in both the drinking and dining sections, however the dining area is a bit stark and boring, and lacking in atmosphere. Like most pubs, The George offers certain deals such as the all day $ 15 pot-and-parma and free trivia every Tuesday. It’s $ 10 steak night on Wednesdays, and they offer curry and a drink for $ 15 all day on Thursdays. There’s live music every Sunday afternoon too. The menu offers a variety of options, which was nice to see. My caesar burger with chips was really tasty, and my friend’s parma looked appetizing too. If it’s beer, pub grub and the usual pub trimmings that you’re after, then this is not a bad little spot to hangout with your friends.

On a cold and gloomy Saturday morning we headed to The George for breakfast to fuel ourselves before our South Melbourne market visit. The lit fire and $ 12 breakfast special stood out among the many cafes lining the neighbouring streets. We sat in the bar section reading the weekend papers over reasonable coffee before diving into the«Big Breakfast» which was not huge but filling nonetheless. I went for the vegetarian breakfast. The Phillipa’s bread supported perfectly cooked scrambled eggs and the tomato, mushrooms, hash brown and spinach were great too. My breakfast companion had the carnivore option which included bacon and sausage. After a quick glance around the rest of the venue, huge rooms great for functions or watching a game and noting the stylish dog wallpaper we left. You can’t beat $ 12 for coffee, a good value breakfast and fast service in authentic pub surroundings.
