Been coming here for years. Mama Tran’s is freshly made and easy! Whether you’re going to have them there or take them home and steam them straight away. I’ve also been one to put them in the freezer for later in the week to steam. Always beautiful, not too heavy and just a enough to fill you up! Cheeky tip… if you’re on a budget come late to Mama Tran’s and they usually have the last days cooked food discounted. I prefer fresh and happy to get in here early!

We usually get our Dim Sims from here when we have people over and we throw them on the barbecue. They are awesome you should try it. I highly recommend it.

Tried the mixed dumplings — no 5 It was alright by my self declared singaporean dumpling afficianado. Good mixture of meats. Getting a seat around the front is easy. Just gotta be patient. You will get distracted by the amount of food around. Focus on the dumplings and you’ll be fine. Dumpling skin is neither to floury and thick. holds the sauce really well. All in all. Not gonna rave about it but its a good experience just sitting there

I might get booted out of Melbourne for saying this, but the smell of the South Melbourne Market Dim Sims makes me gag. I know they’re famous… but every time I walk past, I mutter expletives about having to walk through the hoards of people eating those stinking fried fart-bombs. Don’t get me started on people that take them on trams… BUT this review isn’t to hate-on dim sims, it’s to love up food’s fluffy pillows of deliciousness — dumplings and bao. Mama Tran makes a huge assortment of fresh dumplings, ready to take-home or have them steam to eat on the spot. Plenty of meat and vegetarian options, as well as the translucent crystal prawn dumplings. I love grabbing them as an interesting appetiser for at-home. If you’re eating on site, make sure you grab a big steamed BBQ bun for $ 2.20. Delicious! I’m not a big fan of eating dumplings with the soy sauce that the stall provides, so if you like your dumpling vinegar and chilli condiments — my advice is to stock up at the Chinese grocer around the corner and then eat these bad boys at home. Also saves fighting for a chair at the communal table that services a number of neighbouring stall holders.

While everyone’s lining up for dimmies do yourself a favour and visit Mama Tran. The dumplings are made fresh each market day and feature amazing flavours like Prawn with Coriander and Chicken, Celery & Water Chestnut. They’re steamed to order, so while you’re waiting grab a BBQ Pork Bun as well and tuck into some sweet, sweet, fluffy goodness.

These guys are famous for having some of the most amazing dumplings. You can see the little ladies folding each one at the back of the shop with expertise and skill. There are heaps of dumpling varieties to choose from, such as the Steamed Roasted Pork Buns, Pork and Prawn with Coriander, Vegetarian Baby Spinach, then there’s the Crystal dumplings, the Sticky Rice and the list goes on. Their Siu Mai is worth experiencing, so juicy and flavoursome with a hint of black pepper. Yum. You can either buy them hot and ready to eat or take some home and cook them yourself. The fact you can have authentic, restaurant quality dumplings at home is what makes Mama Tran so special.
