Haven’t had one of these for a long time — steamed — size of a tennis ball for $ 2.50. Too good!

I can’t really rate these as I don’t eat them being vegan and all. I come here to buy my youngest his favourite dimmies, they’re big, they smell like dimmies, he eats three & then rolls about in a food coma. They must be good or else he wouldn’t eat them. Been an icon of Melbourne for about 18 years so must be doing something right.

This place is a dump. Seriously, you would pass it by on the street and think — why would I go there? But then you see the lineup out the front and you think, «Well, maybe I’ll try something just to see what the fuss is about», and then you get to the front of the line and there is a lady there with zero interest. «What do you have», you ask, and she points her finger over her shoulder without even looking at you to these big gloriously glossy dim sims and your mouth starts to water. I got two. They supply the most pathetic forks that bend and snap, so don’t bother or bring your own — prepare to use your hands. Tip in a bunch of soy and siracha sauce into the grease proof paper bags they tip them into and then gorge. They are. Amazing. And cheap. Sorry have to go, getting hungry.

The dim sums here at south Melbourne market are famous for a reason! At first I thought $ 3 per dumpling was a bit expensive, but these dumplings are larger than other dumplings, and taste a million times better! You can get them fried or boiled, we got them boiled because they’re less calories and focus more on the flavor. The outside sticks to the Baggie so you may have to scrap it off of their, but get every single bit of the dumpling! It’s very meaty in the best Asian broiled way. This company does it well. There’s seating nearby for other restaurants you can sit at, but you can walk through the markets and eat them because they’re not too messy. Definitely recommend buying one to say you have!

You can’t really say you’ve been to South Melbourne Market until you’ve tried their famous Dim Sims. This isn’t of the the small fish and chip shop kind, these are pretty big. They are a big lump of pork and vegetable greatness which us wrapped in a wonton wrapper which comes in steamed or fried varieties. You can eat them ‘au natruel’ or dip them in soy suace and chilli sauce. Yeah, the queues can be long, but they’re worth it. Also try: Pork mince with rice Fried pork bento box Braised Pork

The reward for visiting this South Melbourne Market institution has opened a new post in the heart of the city, ready for the peckish commuters and later night munchies. It’s a basic setup, fried or steamed. Other treats include potato cakes and chicko rolls. Perfect hunger killer.

Look, you can’t come to the South Melbourne Market and not have one of the famous Dim Sims. Not to be confused with the smaller fish and chip shop variety that you grew up with, these are giants. A fist sized lump of porky-veggie goodness encased in a wonton wrapper that comes steamed or fried, you can eat them ‘au naturel’ or drown them in dark soy and monster loads of chilli sauce. You absolutely must join the queue and wait your turn on a cold day, or after a bender the night before. Trust me, these things cure everything.
