It’s sad when little kids get sick but it’s good to know that there’s Mater Children’s to patch them up. I did work experience here back in the days when I was a trainee pharmacist and even back then, I remember thinking ‘Goshness, these people are thorough.’ In the pharmacy, we had to check, then double check, then triple check the dosages on the prescriptions that came through. Little people don’t take well to adult doses of medication. When my nephew was admitted last year, we were all impressed by the professionalism of the medical team. It’s hard to explain to a two year old why you want to stick’em with needles — or worse, why you need to leave a needle stuck in their arm overnight. They tend to kick and scream. The nurses were incredible at managing screaming children and traumatised parents. My sister was even allowed to stay overnight in a makeshift bed in the same room as my nephew. Thankfully, I haven’t had to visit mater Children’s lately. While the place is bright and cheerful, here’s hoping no one has to visit here in 2012.
