Thanh Phong may not be one of the original Phô mob like Thy Thy, Tho Tho, or Phuong Dzuong but it has the right mix of good food, modern décor and lacks the snobbishness that some places have ended up with in redecorating and going upmarket. I don’t feel weird bringing the kids here, and the hygiene level is much better than some others.

Walking along Victoria st last night on the hunt for a great Phở in the heavy mix of Vietnamese spots we decided we would select the place with a packed restaurant and the line out the door. Enter Thanh Phong! This small place looks hygienically a cut about the rest and their menu is extensive with a mix of both Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine. I ordered the Phở, rice paper rolls and my friend the beef and fried rice. All dishes were exquisite and their Phở was most likely the best I have had. I know most people like to add bean shoots, chili and plum sauce but honestly the raw Phở didn’t require anything else. It was that good! Will certainly be back for more. Thanks Thanh Phong.

With so many choices in Victoria St I was lured into Thanh Phong as it was just outside the super concentration of Phở restaurants.(Also the review on Unilocal!of Prawn Springrolls!) The Broken Rice was standard, but the Sliced Fish with Cashew was fresh and cooked perfectly. The vegetables and fish were both the highlights. Coconut juice is so fresh with its slices of young Coconut. If your not sure what to pick in this area, and want to avoid the crowd, pick this one and enjoy.

Springrolls are made on the premises and actually taste of their prawn fillings rather than the usual bland mush. The noodles in the rice vermicelli is pleasantly al dente and make for a tasty, texturally-pleasing and refreshing ‘Bun’; which has an accent on the ‘u’ so it is pronounced like the french ‘Bön’ but with a tonal intricacy.

Located on Victoria Street, the Little Saigon area of Richmond, Thanh Phong is one of many restaurants that serve authentic Vietnamese cuisine in the area. A very modern and clean looking establishment, Thanh Phong is painted green and brown with modern IKEA-like chairs and tables. It has the usual Vietnamese dishes on the menu for about $ 1 to $ 2 more than its competitors on Victoria Street. That’s not an issue for me because it’s still cheap compared to most restaurants. You’re looking around $ 20 per person. I ordered the phở, which is the benchmark for any Vietnamese restaurant. The phở was good — it wasn’t amazing, but it was tasty. I’ve probably have had better phở in my lifetime. The same goes for their rice paper rolls — it was good, but nothing amazing. Thanh Phong does offer cheap and delicious Vietnamese cuisine, but it’s not one of the most memorable restaurants on Victoria Street.

Thanh Phong is one of those«ol faithful» restaurants on Victoria St. Offering more than just phở, it’s a standard Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant with surly but efficient waitstaff and a roaring trade. You see a lot of «white folk» in this place, probably a nod to the hygienically-sound appearance unlike some of the other restaurants on this strip. Food is standard, good and consistent. I always get the rice paper rolls and the lemon chicken. It was also one of the first place on the strip to offer a thermos of free green tea, which is now common at most places. In a word, reliable.
