My regular breakfast/brunch haunt when I’m in Melbourne. I love the coffee, the service is friendly and the food is delicious and the portions are generous and they do all day breakfast!!! Today I had toasted sourdough layered with slices of bacon, topped with a salsa made with tomatoes, Spanish onion, avocado and basil, and two poached eggs. All drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice. OMG! Amazeballs!

Last month I enjoyed my first trip to Australia. We stayed at the Quest apartments on Lennox and ate breakfast every morning but one Short Black. First off, the owner and servers are so friendly and a joy to talk to. They bring you cold, fresh water in a beautiful colored glass bottle to start your meal. On top of that I loved their lattes and fresh orange juice. Now onto the food… They had a great breakfast meal that consisted of eggs on top of a thick toast and delicious bacon. Seriously the best bacon I have ever had and being from Texas, I eat a lot of bacon!!! The serving size was more than enough. One day I tried the fried barramundi and enjoyed it very much. They also had the best fresh fruit that we would enjoy as a dessert. We would stay at Short Black for almost 2 hours every day planning our activities and reading the paper. Never once were we rushed out. I cannot say enough how friendly the staff is. We tried one other breakfast spot on our trip and regretted it so much that we vowed to keep eating at Short Black! There was never a wait for a table there and we loved the atmosphere. If your in Melbourne and near this area definitely give Short Black a try!!!

We were very hungry and completely unfamiliar with the area(on holiday from Chicago) but the staff beckoned us and we sat down at one of the tables right on Bridge. The wait staff was exceptional and despite our initial response to the menu(oh no! it’s one of those places that tries to serve EVERYTHING) we were very pleasantly surprised by the delicious food and extremely reasonable prices. I had the burger(with the lot, of course) and my partner had the smoked chicken risotto. Our daughter had spinach and feta triangles. The risotto was a bit salty to be sure but the burger was prepared perfectly, the fries were sensational, and the triangles came with a lovely salad. My flat white was delish as was my partner’s chai latte. The service staff comped our toddler a rainbow babychino. Perhaps the mgmt should look after the bathrooms with a bit more precision but — all in all — this was the right kind of surprise!

Damn, Short Black have got some comfy chairs. High-backed and upholstered in red leather, they’ve got exactly the right amount of bounce. Seriously, they must have a chair tuner come in when it’s quiet, or something. Good coffee too, and I’m told the rear garden is quite lovely as well.

This café doesn’t look like much from the outside and as I sat down I thought that the experience wouldn’t be too memorable. Thankfully I was proved wrong by the great food, decent coffee and lovely wait staff. Firstly the service was fantastic; the wait staff were friendly and hospitable and very efficient when it came to getting the coffee out and taking your orders. We were sitting out the front and I was really impressed that they didn’t forget about us and were still able to give good service with a genuine smile. The food is really good too and I recommend heading there for a late breakfast, or just taking your time over a cup tea or coffee and the morning paper. The coffee may not be spectacular but its decent and the prices are low compared to some of the other cafes along the strip, the prices for mains peak at just over $ 20.
