Great place for a fossick for hipsters to collectors to Nannas, and also sticky beakers like me who just enjoy strolling the aisles looking over the crazy assortment of odd and wonderful recent relics.

Chapel St Bazaar has everything vintage and collectable that you could imagine, including: clothing, records, old original movie posters, tin toys, and taxidermy animals. It’s not particularly cheap, because the owners and buyers clearly know the value of their stock, so it’s unlikely that you’ll discover unexpected bargains. Whilst lots of the items at Chapel St Bazaar might appear to be little more than junk, when you do a bit of hunting you can see that there are actually heaps of weird and wonderful things in store that make it a great place to waste some time, if not to stock up on original 1970’s Playboys and the like.

Squeezed between every nook and cranny is a perfect window into every fluttering design concept from every era. There are sharp, glamorous cameras from the 1920s, homoerotic memorabilia from the closeted 1950s, arbitrary robots from the 80s, and drug-induced pop art from the 60s. If not to be used in any other context, Chapel Street Bazaar is simply a great place to go to study the psychology endemic to every generation. Chapel Street Bazaar is a fantastic collection of the oddest, most whimsical and wonderful tits and bits this side of the Yarra. Not quite an antiques store, definitely not a contemporary space, the Bazaar is best described as an anthology of knick knacks that, since their time, have been recontextualized and redefined to fit quite nicely into contemporary living rooms and bedrooms. Check it out. It used to be my favourite place on Chapel Street until my doctor explained that my seizures were due to aesthetic over-stimulation.
