If you are in Port Adelaide it’s worth dropping in to this pretty pub. The staff are warm, welcoming and efficient and the food and drinks are reasonably priced, although I have yet to try the food. This hotel is a great place to stop off to get you in the mood for a trip to the National Railway Museum nearby. HISTORY The pub opened in 1856 and was located on the opposite side of St Vincent Street to service passengers of the new Port Adelaide Railway Station, according to my Port Adelaide Heritage Pub Trail brochure FOLKLORE The pub’s cellar was once used as a stable for horses, and there are claims a body was buried there.

Much like the Sussex that I’ve just written a review for, this place is pleasant enough. It’s not a completely wanky place where the men drink light cider and there are fifteen different spoons(each with a different purpose, and by god, you don’t fucking use the wrong spoon at the wrong time or you’ll be looked down upon as a heathen). It’s also not rough-as-guts, where even knowing that there are more than three types of spoon will earn you a beating involving the use of a broken glass. The food here is good, honest pub food. Fairly generous, and for me it’s come out fairly quickly. Maybe I’m special, but probably not. There are a few better places around, but there’s lots worse too. Have a look.

I love dark, secluded, rustic, sea shanty pubs with the smell of beer(fresh) and the faint smell of cigars, ok the later wasn’t present inside but it was a blowen outside. Without being condescending, I reckon every man, woman and child smokes in Port Adelaide. All the oldies are getting a face lift, it’s a dying breed of pub not to purge itself of the old, but this one has remained sort of neutral, not modern nor old, by George I think it’s ok just the way it is and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. The beer is cold, the atmosphere is on the dark side(que: Darth Vader breathing), it passes the pub grub with flying colours and easy on the wallet or purse. I will definitely be coming back here in the not too distant future. It was established 1856 and I’m sure if the walls could talk, what a tale they’d tell… even the cellar may have a ghost or two!
