I was invited to join a group of 12 to celebrate a 50th birthday. My scepticism arises as to whether the establishment can handle groups of that size without the wait staff losing the plot and forget drinks or dishes. So with the murmurs around the table of fellow diners who have eaten here before, that the food will be great but the service will be substandard, I settled in with relatively low expectations of service. To start part of our group arrived 35 minutes late and yet there were no complaints from the staff ‘re that issue, which was refreshing. The decision was made early that we would leave the ordering to our most trusted Asian foodie amongst us. Which immediately took the pressure off the whole group. Time to relax and wait. For a Friday night the restaurant was moderately busy and yet where we were seated made for not feeling cooped up. The décor is on point modern Japanese, stylish, slick with the open kitchen that always gives a sense that the kitchen staff take pride in their product. And well they should. Our share plates started arriving approximately 10 mins from ordering and then each plate arrived almost perfectly timed as we finished the last. Starting with perfect tempura prawns, then moving on to chicken skewers, salmon, soft shelled crab and watermelon salad, ribeye with 3 dips, gyoza and spider rolls. Excellent choices by our lovely friend. Each dish served beautifully and cooked to perfection. We finished with espresso’s and shared a few desserts. The staff looking after us were attentive yet not over bearing. There were no issues with splitting the bill into different types of payment. In fact our accounting error was pointed out and rectified to our benefit. I left feeling like the evening had been an easy and completely relaxed, pleasant experience. Which for a larger group can be difficult to achieve. So nice one Sushia! A great night.

Lovely atmosphere — quiet enough to allow you to have a good conversation with the rest of your table whilst providing quality ambience. The décor and presentation is top-notch and the staff were very helpful, polite and available. Definitely enjoyed the meal which was excellent Japanese fare, served quickly and presented well. This is, however, fine Japanese dining at a price point to match — don’t expect large portions or small prices.

Hmm, I can’t say I am as enthusiastic about my dining experience here as my friends were. But I can also say I cannot complain about the presentation of the food and the ambiance. I had a friend visiting from interstate and he was keen to share some good Japanese food with me. The booking process over the phone was relatively easy. I was looking forward to the meal with keen anticipation. My friends who recommended this place do not give bum steers. I was told I *had* to order the Unagi Fried Rice. Don’t need to ask me twice. On entry, the maitre’d was a little lack lustre. In fact, his whole demeanour indicated he wasn’t keen to be at work that night, or any night. But I am not going to let one person ruin a good evening. He was a snappy dresser, I’ll grant him that. Seated at a table for two, beside a table of six screeching ladies was not ideal. As I hadn’t seen my friend for some time, I could block out the noise. I would have preferred a more thoughtful position of seating from the establishment. It was not full on a Monday night. Our waitress struggled to understand my patient explanation of my onion intolerance and that under no circumstances should I have any onion product(I listed them all). I wasn’t convinced she understood. We asked for a wine recommendation to match the food we ordered. She didn’t understand /couldn’t assist. She went off, came back and gave us three to choose from. When you are dining at what purports to be high end dining, there is an expectation that either all the waitstaff know how to pair the wine to the food, or there is a sommelier available. Disappointed. The first of our four dishes came out. As expected, with Japanese food, the presentation was top notch. The problem was, there was onion rolled within the exquisitely produced dish which meant one of two things for me: make a fuss and send it back(not my preference) or miss out. I opted for missing out. The second dish came out, with onion. As a garnish, I was able to fish it out, but I shouldn’t have to. I did. It was scallops. Enough said. The third dish came out, vegetable tempura, thankfully(and surprisingly), with no onion product. But the dish of the night was about to come out and I really, REALLY wanted to eat it, so I called a different waiter and re-iterated the necessity for absolutely no onion. The risk being that due to the ambient lighting and the camouflage of the fried rice dish, if it was present, I wouldn’t be able to see it before I put it in my mouth, resulting in a puffer fish disastrous reaction. But JOY! The Unagi Fried Rice came out onion free and we ate with abandon. It was delicious, as were the other parts of the meal that I ate. The bill for four dishes and one bottle of wine came out to $ 135. Without trying to sound like a petulant child, for that money, I have a greater expectation of service to match the quality of the food and the location. In any event, my friends’ recommendation has been vindicated as the Unagi Fried Rice really was terrific. Pity they don’t do take away.

We popped down to Sushia for a luxurious lunch and wasn’t disappointed. We ordered salted edamame, salt and pepper squid, tataki, miso, garden salad and pork belly. Each dish was masterfully and artfully plated. The squid absolutely melted in my mouth. The tataki was so soft and juicy. Each dish delightful. The atmosphere was modern with a warehouse feel and dim lighting. It was a great spot for a lunch date.

My best friend has been going on about this place for the last 18 months then bought my husband and I a voucher late last year — we finally got there tonight to score a free meal and try it out! We were not Disappointed at all! Firstly it was definitely value for me, granted we had $ 200 to spend so we went more crazy than we normally would, but you get a lot of food for that amount, especially since we only have one wine and two beers between us. The edamame is to die for with big chunks of yummy salt. I don’t like sashimi but my hubby was impressed but I did try the beef carpaccio which was so fresh and full of flavour. The best meal of the night(which we got at the start and the end!) was the tempura prawn sushi roll, amazing! We also tried pork gyoza, peppered squid and the assorted tempura. Absolutely no complaints. All the food was fresh and light and even though we left feeling full, we still felt good and not like we’d over indulged. We even ended with dessert of chocolate fondant and black sesame icecream, the fondant was perfect and like chocolate molten lava! The service was impeccable, and it wasn’t too loud in there to talk to your partner. I also love Brookfield Place and the atmosphere and feel of it at night when it’s all lit up. A beautiful date night out.

What an amazing menu! There were so many options it was hard to pick what to eat. We had duck teppanyaki, mixed tempura, lotus chips, s & p squid. The presentation was beautiful, the atmosphere was lovely & food great!

All these other Unilocalers and their gorgeous photos from this place had me salivating for a good week. Not much can deter me from a night of fine Japanese cuisine! Finding this establishment was a little tricky, but if you know where Print Hall is, it is directly opposite and then downstairs. The restaurant is very intimate and such lovely minimal effort to keep it classy and also great attention to detail. The cherry blossom tree in the middle of the floor was just visually stunning to look at whilst waiting for food. The table next to me had ordered so much food that it was great to see some of what was up for offer, and literally telling the waitress while pointing at their food saying«I don’t know what that is, but I’ll have 2 of that thank you!» We ordered many dishes, the waitress was great with her service offering the most popular dishes for us to try. We had the sashimi assortment, gzoya, chilli crab salad, soft shell crab salad, lamb cutlets, pork belly, tempura vegies, beef tataki, natural oysters All the food was spot on– cooked well and came so quickly. My favourite was probably the chilli crab salad! That truly was delicious! Dessert included chocolate fondant cake with raspberry couli and green tea ice-cream, fried banana and green tea and black sesame mochi ice-cream. Delicate and all very delicious. My one complaint is that when it came to pay the bill, the gentleman behind the counter refused to serve me until he had finished typing something on his mobile phone, and was constantly asking for help. I forgive him, if he was new to the job, but phone mannerisms like that do not go well with me! I would reccomend this place for Japanese to anyone that would enjoy the food and special-ness that is Brookfield Place.

Though this place seems to be on the expensive side, I could not resist when a friend suggest we should come here for a Friday lunch. the service was excellent, our food came out within 5 minutes and the place got a nice vibe to it. you don’t need to yell when you’re conversing and I find this place quite relaxing after a long hard week at work to just wind down with a nice glass of red! share a few dishes with friends or partner and forget the world for a little while… ps. if you want to impress your first date, I reckon this is the place to be. those dimmed light makes you feel less self-conscious and you could focus more on your date!

Ventured to Sushia Izakaya & Bar on Monday night for dinner after work. Hidden away in Brookfield Plaza this place is impressive, great feel about it and very ambient inside. Staff were extremely attentive and helpful with choosing dishes. For starters we had the pulled pork tacos and wagyu gyoza — both were delicious and I could have seriously eaten an entire plate of the tacos. The best starter I have had in a while! For main we ordered from the teppinyaki part of the menu and ordered the chicken and eye fillet, as well as a serve of the vegetable tempura and rice. Mains were delicious, however if I went again I would probably order shared mains from different parts of the menu as the sauces on these two dishes were all but identical. The chicken for me was the winner of these two! All in all great hidden venue which for a Monday night was fairly busy. Huge menu with so many options. Will be definitely be headed back to here again!

Sorry guys– this review is for Sushia izakaya. My word! We are gobsmacked! Japanese cuisine at it’s best! So we had wagyu beef score 9+ on a hot stone which had flames thrown in the works, and rice… edamame beans, deconstructed sashimi salad, trio oysters, beef tataki and an eggplant dish… And what a lovely surprise from Chef Ardi — the seared salmon with miso dressing. They had the service down packed– even delivered and assisted us to wear our winter coats for us. Atmosphere was easy going, not too pretentious, food just as awesome as Nobu(as the chefs were from there!!) Prices reasonable. Overall was impressed, felt really comfortable there and everyone looked happy! Definitely coming back!

SushiaOWWW! This new addition to Brookfield place is located in the lower level opposite from the Small Print Bakery. It only just opened last Tuesday night and having gotten the chance me and Susan managed to get a booking to check it out. Sushia boasts that it has poached three of Nobu Perth’s top chefs John Hizola, David Jung and Ardy Sulaiman. This being the case our tastebuds were trembling in anticipation at what potential offerings were on offer having been to Nobu on several occasions in the past with friends and family. What we ended up experiencing was something disappointingly different. What started out great ended up going downhill from there. Upon entering we were greeted by a friendly waitress who showed us to our table. Hunger had gotten the best of us and we had come a bit early but they were more than accommodating. At this point the place was still empty, us being the first customers of the night. The water was brought straight out and menus were supplied. There is a fair bit of choice in these. We chose to order from the al e carte menu but there was 2 options of Degustation also on offer. We decided to get a bit of a mix opting for both cold and hot dishes. We opted for a few cocktails to start. The Shiro Watermelon Martini was pretty impressive and actually tasted like watermelon. The Shinsen Crush had a very distinctive flavour but was also quite interesting. To start we ordered Spider Maki(Softshell crab sushi) and Smoked Wagyu. Upon presenting the wagyu dish the lid was removed and an aromatic waft of smoke was released. The wagyu had a very distinctive flavour and the Spider Maki was average for soft shell crab sushi. We continued on with Pork Belly and Gindara Saikyo Yaki(caramalised toothfish). The toothfish was the highlight of the night. The pork belly seemed like something was missing. For fans of crispy pork belly I suppose that would be the crackling aspect of the dish. That is not intended here so don’t be mistaken if you order this dish. At this point as we hadn’t ordered any rice we were still hungry so we decided to share a serving(you get 2 skewers) of Kushiyaki Tako(Marinated Octopus). The was very flavoursome but also quite salty. On to dessert! We settled on Banana Harumaki which is basically banana in spring rolls accompanied with black sesame ice cream. Up until this point service was exceptional and was even as we walked out the door. What changed was the food. The dessert arrived and we dug in not thinking anything of the fact that the scoop of icecream was a very distinct pink colour(it tasted like raspberry sorbet) instead of something you would normally associate with black sesame. Once we confirmed our suspicions we called over the waitress who informed us that as the kitchen had deemed the black sesame ice cream wasn’t ready to serve a substitute was put in place and that they did apologise on their behalf. What annoyed us both was that at no point were we asked if this was okay until we brought up the difference in what we paid for and what we received. The service came through and the waitress ended up bringing us a replacement dessert dish with the required black sesame icecream. In my opinion worth waiting for too. All in all a nice place, with a nice atmosphere. The staff were very approachable and professional. Ambiance was good too except for one point halfway through our meal when more people starting arriving to have dinner and they turned up the music a little bit too loud. I know its a new restaurant and there will be little mistakes and errors but you’d think when 3 top chefs from one of the best Japanese restaurants in town leave there and set up shop here you would be very impressed. Honestly … we weren’t.
