I went on the cupcake and dessert walking tour of Perth, lasting 3 hours and visiting 6 different venues. There was about 14 people, majority locals. Our tour guide Ripley, a Perth local was full of spirit and warned us to strategically pace ourselves throughout the tour and was sweet enough to offer plastic ziplock bags for the excess — not that I needed it! Our first stop was Chocolateria San Churro where we indulged in mini churros with dark and milk chocolate dipping sauce. We were also given a mini history lesson in the name behind the café and how it all began. Second stop: Tea for Tu. This was probably the best stop especially for people visiting Perth. We took the back entrance and shared some freshly made madeleine’s and chocolate brownies. Whilst in the area, we has a peak at the views at the Mechanics Institute. Heading into the city, Ripley made sure to point out the local sites such as the State Library, Museum, AGWA and the local toilets. Although as we were majority all local’s, the mention of local toilet stops was not needed. The third stop was a bit of a disappointment. We headed to Ben and Jerry’s and got to sample two flavours — which is free for anyone to do. This seemed like a bit of a waste of a stop, especially as the brand is well known globally. Fourth stop made me question why I went on the tour as it was Darrell Lea, an Australian chocolate brand. We sampled the chocolate pretzel, chocolate peanuts and bullets. Ripley not so subtly hinted that we should support local business, especially as the company is facing a bit of financial strife. However, for a local this was nothing special. 5th stop: Bella’s cupcakes. Here we got a cupcake and a chocolate or strawberry milkshake. Again, another local business that has franchised, however the cupcakes are generic after you dump the icing. 6th stop: Maison Saint Honore, where frenchie Samuel treated us the history of macarons and some tasty samples. By this stage, I didn’t think I could fit in any more, but the last stop was Pancakes at Carillon where we shared 4 plates and got a drink. The ending was a bit disappointing, especially as it wasn’t anything special. Nevertheless, the tour was a fun day out and probably best for interstaters or foreigners as they get to explore the city as well. But a fellow Unilocaler, who has sampled a lot of great desserts in the city, Foodi’s got nothing on me.
